figure this deserved a thread of its own...

JLEW, if you didn't see my post, the 2000 miami roster had Reggie Wayne and Santana Moss to go along with those guys from 2001....

The '86 Hurricane roster was probably the most talented...

Vinnie Testerverde
Michael Irvin
Bennie Blades
Brian Blades
Jeff Feagles
Alonzo Highsmith
Jerome Brown
Russell Maryland
Cleveland Gary
Daniel Stubbs
Alfredo Roberts
Winston Moss
Bubba McDowell
George Mira jr.
Warren Williams
Brett Perriman

probably a bunch more I don't remember..I would say the 2000 and 1986 challenge the 01 if not more

AND Charles White.

I give the nod to the 2001 Hurricanes because they assembled that talent WITH scholarship restrictions. How many schollies could be given out in '86? Gotta be more than in 2001.

After Miami beat us back in the 80's some were saying "Defensive speed has caught up with the wishbone" Switzers answer to that was Hell nobody else beat them either.. I think Tn. lucked out and beat them in a bowl game one year but hardly anyone did.. Hardly anyone beat Barry's teams in those days either.. When he was asked why Miami beat us he said They were the better team then.. I think he was right.. Jimmy Johnson was a good coach but Howard Schnellenberger actually got Miami going and won a NC then Jimmy inherited his team.. JJ was overrated as a coach IMO but that's another story..

That '90 team for Miami was awesome too, the way they got 200 yds in penalties against the whorns in the '91 Cotton Bowl, and still beat them 41-3, or something like that. Someone might want to look at their roster for NFL names.

I think they had a lot of good college receivers that never amounted to much in the pros.

Horace Copeland, Lamar Thomas, Kevin Williams. If they operated under today's officiating they get a 15-yard penalty after every catch.

Randall Hill. Still dancing in the tunnel of the Cotton Bowl.

The only teams of late who are going to even sniff the Miami bunch in terms of talent are the USC squads of the last seven or eight years.

interesting read....

probably most of those guys can't tell you one thing about college football before the 1990's(if that).....

Gosh, going through all the guys that were drafted from that 86 team, much less the guys who took NFL snaps as FA's would take forever...

name the ones that were never drafted, or signed as free agents

sure some may not be playing now. but the fact that they signed were signed by the NFL is amazing

(again, i got that list from a blog)

No question that the 2000 and the 2001 team's were very talented....but I think in terms of not just getting drafted, or signed, but in NFL production also, the '86 team would be the pick...

11/18/2009, 05:19 PM
yah, well 2001 had the most NFL talent on their team, literally

but some of those guys were freshman at the time

i couldn't tell you much about the 80's lol

I bet more from the '86 squad played than we'd remember (as in how many were replacement players in '87).

I've got 19 that actually made rosters and took snaps..all 19 of those guys were drafted.Im sure there was plenty more that were signed as UDFA's like the list you have includes..

and truthfully there was more than 19 guys drafted, Its just harder to find that information

there is 33 draft picks.. not sure bout names, I'll look through later.

STEP is right about 2 undrafted guys

Jarret Payton was not drafted, Romberg was not drafted, probably a few other...thats a list of guys that had played

stoops the eternal pimp

Miami had 36 guys drafted between 87 and 90, but that doesn't count because the draft rounds were more then..

JLEW1818

the consensus was that the 72 usc trojans were the most talented. 14 first round picks from that team i think they said.

I'm with you STEP. To the question at hand, it's got to be either the '86 or '01 Hurricanes.

A quick note: we dominated most of the men who made up the '72 Trojans, we just did it in '71. 33-20, and they had to score on the last play of the game to make it that close.

11/18/2009, 11:14 PM
I agree, for "team", I'd go 95 Huskers. For "talent", 86 Miami.

right before I clicked on this thread, I thought "86 Miami" -- they were insanely talented all over the field

much better than their 87 squad that won the NC the next year

the PSU Fiesta win over that '86 squad was one of the biggest upsets in the modern era....a football version of Duke-UNLV

it really cheesed me off during the OU-NU game last week (where suicidal thoughts were almost always a "thing"...to watch us move the ball between the 30's and chump it up in the RZ).....when they showed the 78 highlight/flashback and not even mention we ***-waxed them in the unprecedented Orange Bowl rematch.
