This has always puzzled me. We are a nation of fat people, why wouldn't a widespread rollout of these sandwiches not be a hit.

you have to settle for Runzas

you have to settle for Runzas

If they made Runza's out of french toast they would be even better. I'll put that in the suggestion box next time.

O'Connell's Monte Cristo should not even be mentioned in the same breath as the crap they call a Monte Cristo at Bennigan's.

Cheddars's is greasy.. It's like they deep-fried the french toast for too long or something. I had it one time and it was quite the gastro-intestinal outflow facilitator, let me tell you.

I like em, but I can literally feel my butt getting bigger before I even finish the last bite. Haven't had one since college, I don't think. They gotta be about 75,000 calories each. Sigh.

My daughter loves them so I'll make them for her. I got the recipe when I was a student at OU working at The Mont. One of the other waitresses was French and made the best Monte Cristo's ever. She was very precise in how she made these, but its a great recipe.

You start out by beating some eggs; 2 whites for every yolk. Use French bread; 2 slices for each sandwich. Remove the crust first. After you build the sandwich with thin sliced Gruyere cheese and lean thinly sliced Hormel ham, dip them in the egg mixture and fry them in a medium to hot cast iron skillet with clarified unsalted butter. Its that easy. She served hers with a variety of two or more warmed jellies on the side for dipping. She always had Jalapeno jelly and usually either plum, apple, strawberry or grape, but you can eat the sandwich plain too.
