If passed, the best value in home theater HDTVs will disappear from California shelves and, some analysts figure, will ultimately cut consumer choices across the country.

Why would this affect anyone in the other 49 states?

I'd guess that because instead of nutting up and saying that these Cali airheads can't draft legislation impacting interstate commerce OR inviting Cali residents to purchase something other than what they make for other markets (or get nothing and like it), companies will try to cater to this Great State whose residents have a GNP larger than most countries.

I suppose it's possible that they'll still produce sets as they do now, but it's also likely that in order to recoup the expenses of research and development of the new and as-yet perhaps uninvented technology, they'll just add expense to the entire line.

As indicated in the article:
CEA fears new restrictions will quickly spill over into other states: as California goes, so goes the nation. Manufacturers will not make TVs that can be sold in one state and not another. Can you imagine The California Energy Diet TV versus The Super Size It Texas TV? Rather than driving Californians out of state and online to buy non-conforming TVs, the net result will be fewer choices for consumers.

"What is needed is congressional legislation on the energy efficiency of CE and other household product," said Steve Smith, Editor-in-Chief of Twice, the consumer electronics trade publication. "Congressional deliberations will allow the opinions of many [to] be heard and considered, rather than have one state legislature dictate policy on such a vital national issue."

It's not entirely dissimilar to what the Cali legislature has done to the auto industry on emissions.

OUDoc
11/11/2009, 04:31 PM
How 'bout they focus on the rest of the country. If Cali has no new big screen TV's, the population will demand they repeal the stupid legislation.

What is it with California and Texas that makes them believe anyone else gives 2 ****s what they think?

oddly enough, some manufacturers are saying they're already at, or near the new energy star requirements and think they'll be able to hit the cali requirements

I don't think it's right for cali to have requirements stricter then the energy star ones, however I don't think it's unfair to ask the manufacturers to reduce the consumption of tv's.

I agree with LAS on this one. Though it irks me that their policies might affect how business is done in other states, it is their right to make the changes. Then it's the other states' jobs to work with Cali to get them changed back or modified so that business isn't impacted in other places. This is how the country is supposed to work, guys.

I can write a check that would pay off my mortgage, but I choose to keep a mortgage, because it makes sense to keep money in a 0% checking account versus a paying off a tax-deductible mortgage at 5.25%. I'm in the 125% tax bracket, you see. I don't feel the need to be happy about making a $1,500 bonus on top of my regular salary, because I poop diamonds.

LAS,

If you could place the California environment (vistas and climate) with an Oklahoma work ethic, people and a low tax rate/no income tax, then you would have as close to Heaven on Earth as I could imagine.

Oh, and flying into Ontario airport is quite a good deal. I'll be checking out Monrovia over the next year or so quite often as I am supporting a new project based out of there.

I gotta straighten out two things:

1) There are PLENTY of people out in Cali with a strong work ethic. Many of them are Okies, but the Mexicans work pretty damned hard, too.

and

2) Our sales tax SUCKS. Yes. But our PROPERTY Tax is RIDICULOUSLY LOW. That's why our sales tax is so high...and that's the real reason our state keeps having budget problems. Most states make the majority of their income off of property tax. Ours got frozen in the mid eighties and hasn't moved since. Thus...the high sales tax.

Shoot. We know Alaska doesn't have any sales tax, but now compare Cali's property tax to Alaska's.

Back on topic, next time you're in Ontario, take a day and drive up to Mt. Baldy village. It's really pretty up there.

Frozen Sooner

As of 2005, California received $0.78 in federal dollars per $1 paid in federal taxes, ranking 43rd among all states (and Puero Rico). Considering the number of military bases in California, that's pretty impressive.

New York received $0.79, ranking 42nd.

These numbers are fairly consistent all the way back to 1981.
