My 2005 Impala's frekin speedometer keeps catching, like when i go 65 and then slow down its catches and sometimes even stops at like 40 or so. then when i accelerate it continues up and makes it look like im going 100 down 177 and stays at 100 until i shut my car off and start it again about 15 times.. This could skrew me over in Asher. And its extrememly annoying. It seems to get worse the colder it gets.

Any help guys?

Don't slow down. :)

I think this may not be a DIY'er.

If it's still under warranty...I'd take it to the dealership. My understanding is that if you aren't under warranty...you aren't going to like the price of the part you'll need to fix it. Also...a used part isn't cheap either.

Then you have the amount you'll need for labor added to this very special Mr. Goodwrench moment.

A buddy of mine had the same thing going on and it eventually just quit altogether. He had a GMC 2500 truck. It was a speedometer part though. I think he told me the part new was $350 and the used guys knew that Chevy and GMC have this problem...so their part was $250 with no guarantee.

alright thanks for the help. i really appreciate it guys. its the most annoying problem ive encountered.

Hey. If this is an easier fix than what I expressed above...then it's all good. I can't imagine it getting much worse than about a $500 problem.

I'm betting if you have someone who's dealt with it before look at it...you might be better off than waiting until it quits altogether.

Good Luck SiK

I have a 2005 GMC Sierra. Had the same problem with mine about a year ago. Was quoted around $500, but my dealership talked GM into covering it as they had a recall on the 04 models, and I had the exact same problem.

Both are about 25 bucks each

Id just swap em both out and be done with it

My Local Orielly would have to order em

Thanks a ton vet, this sounds much better than the 350-250 price dealio. My grandpa can order these and swap them and he will prolly do it for free.

For the most part, every now and then it seems to stall a little between second and third gear (im guessing). Between 20-30 mph

Does the Speedometer jump all the time ?

Or just when the trans is messin up ?

soonerinkaty
11/9/2009, 01:12 PM
the speedometer doesnt mess up all the time, usually just after i break hard or after about 10 miles or so.

olevetonahill
11/9/2009, 01:17 PM
Ok so then AFTER 10 miles or so is it continuous?
Or just intermittent as the Trans messes up ?

soonerinkaty
11/9/2009, 01:21 PM
i dont think the trans has much to do with the speedometer, for the most part the trans is fine and im usually going 65-70 when the speedometer messes up.

olevetonahill
11/9/2009, 01:26 PM
Reason Im askin is if the Trans aint shifytin right then its prolly the sensor

If its shiftin right and yer speedo is messin up then its More than likely yer Instrument cluster

The dude I talked to is a Service tech at a GM dealership here

I can get ya a Cluster prolly cheaper than you can get one anywhere and ship it to you if ya want

Don't write off blinker fluid.

The money in Vegas says you're low on it.

Might be worth checking if that probelm is under a recall. I think there's a website or two where you can search all recalls by make and model.

Officer: You have no functioning gauges.
Del: No…not a one. However the radio still works…funny as that may seem…with all this mess the radio is the only thing really working good. Clear as a bell, don’t ask me how.
