I have a computer with a CD-rom that's broken. I'm trying to install Ubuntu OS version 9.10 from a USB stick with no luck. The darn thing keeps stopping in the process.

There has got to be a way to fix this. I'm just afraid I've reached my computer knowledge limits.

You've greatly exceeded mine. Here's a bump.

I may look into getting an external cd rom drive.

i'm guessing this is a laptop?

i have one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812189169&cm_re=ide_sata_usb_adapter-_-12-189-169-_-Product

works on any harddrive or optical drive to make it external

where is it stopping when you are trying to install? does it boot into the live Ubuntu image ok?

i've done this a lot, but haven't really had many problems, it usually just kinda works...

Thanks yermom. I may try it. I think I'm gonna try a different jump drive. This gateway's cd-rom drive has never really worked very well.

edit: i can't say this has worked for me though i've bookmarked it. i have to communicate with students using XP, Vista, OS 10, Ubuntu....so i have to stay accessible as a teacher. or they fake the complaints.

to me, i'd be using Ubuntu....without the student communications.

I was looking at the reviews there Yermom....lol

Cons: Absolute junk. I plugged this into my hard drive, and the thing started smoking and one of the chips on the bottom caught fire. Afterward it wouldn't work at all, and neither would the USB adapter. Newegg said to contact Link Depot, Link Depot never returned my emails. So far I'm out a USB adapter and a hard drive.  :pop: :D
