The sad part is, the string of eight highly-trianed horses are a bit long in the tooth and the mounted cop interviewed for the story says they'll probably end up at a stockyards destined for sale as meat in Mexico.

There are more folks around that care about what happens than they think. In the days to come...I think they will see just how much...at least I hope so. They have always been cool to my kids when they wanted to pet the horses.

They will be missed. This is a mistake by the TPD IMO.

That's a goofy argument though. I mean, how much money would they save by disbanding the rest of the police force, too? There are situations that mounted police are a very good option, and not easily replaced by other methods.

What are they going to use for crowd control instead? Segway cops? Blarg.

This is as silly a decision as when Wichita disbanded their motorcycle unit.

This is stupid pliticians mucking with **** they know nothing about. First, request a grant for the unit. There is Fed money out there to help. My dept just got a grant for K-9 division. Sheesh!

I think most of this could have been avoided had we not bought a New City Hall. Our fair Mayor is feeling the heat right now.

Uh, yeah. Losing 20 police officers also is making Tulsa a safer place to live...and now the city can't sell the old buildings in this economy.

Blame TPD. More specifically, the FOP.

When the cuts fell in this most recent round, the "fraternal" brotherhood of police officers fed on the jobs of the new and undefended instead of opening their contracts and taking...

*SHOCK! HORROR!*

A damned pay cut. All the FOP had to do was reopen the contract, offer X percentage of pay equivalent to that needed to cover the shortage, and bingo. We still have mounted patrol. We still have a helicopter. Instead, we have a brotherhood that's more than happy to feed on its own.

Way to step up, FOP. Fail.

Why was a paycut needed?

Mismanagement of funds?

In lieu of layoffs.

Again...it's over money not the need for less Police or police services. I see no reason to put blame on employees for there not being enough money in the coffers.

Did the Fire Dept. take pay cuts? I'm not trying to be argumentative either...I'm just asking?

Our Mayor got her hands on money from the County Expo Property. Everything out there...the City gets a piece of now. It was to help raise taxes in Tulsa to pay for other things. The Police give out tickets and fines. They can raise money everyday. Now...cutting something like a Helicopter in the face of more and more gang violence...that's not going to make our City any safer than cutting the Fire Department's budget.

The TPD is being forced to make those cuts IMO.

The initiative to annex the Fairgrounds was from Roscoe Turner, a former City Councilor. I don't even think when that began that this Mayor was in office, I could be wrong on that though.

However, the only thing the City gets from that annexation is sales taxes and in the grand scheme of things, it's not that much. It's more than they'd get w/o the annexation and they have to maximize those sales tax collections when they can but annexing the fairgrounds is not going to come anywhere close to making up for 10-12% reductions in sales tax receipts that the City is currently seeing.

See....there ya go getting all political. Money is coming in from Expo Square. It might not be much...but it's more than we used to get. It started on her watch. Now we have a ballpark that is supposedly being paid for with taxes. Now we can't pay for these horses or a helicopter or to fix streets....

I'm glad we didn't start building a concrete sandbar on the Arkansas River too.

How did I get political? I believe the current Mayor and Roscoe Turner are of some the same political party.

The ballpark is being paid for approximately half by private donors and half by the Downtown Improvement District assessment so unless you are a downtown property owner you're not paying for a dime of it.

The fix the streets program is underway, they've already issued $81 million of the $285 million in bonds, there is also the 3rd penny sales tax that will go toward that as well as the Vision 2025 sales tax money when that program expires. All voted for by the citizens of Tulsa.

You'll see low water dams in the river too, but it will be paid for from federal or state funds.

I don't like seeing TPD cut either, but it's not like the Mayor or any other individual did it. She asked all departments to submit cutbacks and these are the cutbacks that TPD provided. All other departments were asked to do the same thing.

The Ballpark was forced on the Downtown Businesses IMO.

Taylor made a mistake on the Ball Park and City Hall not Roscoe Turner. She pushed them both. It hasn't panned out like it was supposed to. That's her fault.

Rumor is that she had to get those street projects going or she was going to have some trouble. Every Mayor since I can't remember when has said they were going to fix the streets. None have done a very good job either. They can't keep up with the need. Instead...we have a new City Hall and a new Ball Park that needs to have half of the cost collected off of the backs of businesses that are feeling the pinch of the economy just like everyone else.

You say she didn't do it but yet you say it was her that asked for cutbacks. I'd say that was her doing. She's a lousy Mayor. She wouldn't run a business like that yet she's going right back into business after office.

The ballpark being forced on d/t property owners may be true, but you need to blame the Council for that too...they're the ones who voted it into place. Same for the City Hall move.

I didn't say anything about Turner being related to the ball park or City Hall issues. He is the one who began the fairground annexation which is what you initially mentioned.

Rumor? What rumor? That's nonsense. Street improvements were demanded by the public, the City put together a proposal to address the issue, it was voted on by the public and it's underway. You can't blame her for the streets either, she's been in office less than 4 years and they didn't get that way in that time.

Of course it was her that asked for cutbacks....she's the Mayor at the time the cuts were necessary. That doesn't even make any sense. Lucky for you, she will not be the next Mayor, I'm sure Addelson/Bartlett will not have any budget concerns. And she isn't going back into business, she will serve the Governor in some capacity dealing with education initiatives....I don't even recall the job or title. And she will do that job, as she has done this one, by taking no salary.

Good News for the horseflesh!

Mrs. Homey's employer, Hillcrest Medical Center*, bought the horses and will ensure they are put safely out to pasture the rest of their lives and the cops formerly assigned to the mounted division will be able to visit and ride them whenever they want.

*The CEO of HMC called the parent corporation in Nashville and they are forking over the required dough.

Taylor should resign. She's done very little good as our Mayor. If she is going to work for the Governor it's probably to protect her record as a public official. Not calling her out is a mistake. Later down the road she'll run for Governor and try to use her record as Mayor and Lt. Governor to bolster her position. She should have stayed by Brad Henry's side and never ventured Tulsa's way. She also had some nerve calling out Mayor LaFortune about the BOK Center considering her ineptitude.

The Counsel should too...but we know that will never happen.

Cool Homey. They deserve that. The Police and the horses.
