View Full Version : BTW in Tulsa under investigation

Supposedly the eligibility of several athletes are in question, including football players. TPS is doing their investigation, results to be turned over to the OSSAA. Surprised I haven't seen a thread about this since the Jenks fiasco was such a hot topic...

Some of you all with the ever-present inside info need to start forking it over. Will Booker T have to forfeit games?

Isn't that where Cobbs plays?

I always remembering hearing about Jenks when I was in high-school. How is Union doing, kinda surprised they're not under investigation

I think the reason the Jenks ordeal made news on this board was because it involved a player that is committed to OU. I'm not aware of any BTW players that are committed to OU.

DeMarco Cobbs plays at East Central.

Does this surprise any Tulsa residents?

Before Booker T became a "magnet school" so they could recruit within all of TPS, this was a regular thing. Play lights out, hella fast in the first part of the season and suck nards come playoff time because the talent is ineligible.

Read: Tulsa's version of Douglass.

Screw Booker T. Go Titans.

I'm not a Tulsa resident, and it doesn't surprise me either. "Magnet School?" Just 'cause you got some smart kids to go there too doesn't mean we don't know which side of that magnet has the most attraction.

Dude, they didn't become a magnet school so they could recruit for football. They became a magnet school for higher learning. My wife and her brother went there.

It's not just an athletic institution.

And I've been told the investigation shant end well.

Booker T is constantly rated one of the top public high schools in the country. ACADEMICALLY ranked, mind you. Don't believe me, read here. (http://www.tulsaworld.com/news/article.aspx?subjectid=332&articleid=20090609_332_0_Tulsas700929&archive=yes)

Whether they are a magnet school for football or not, they are a good school. They just broke some athletic rules and they're getting punished for it.

Whatever, the Tulsaworld goes down on Booker T like their academics are the greatest thing since sliced bread, because there is nothing else worth talking about in TPS outside of the crime report.

Jenks, BA, Owasso, and the Edmond schools blow BTW out of the water academically when you look at average ACT/SAT scores, AP students who actually pass AP tests, and just about every other academic measure. Do your research and you will find out what kind of "farce" the BTW academic reputation truly is.

All I know is that when we would go down to Tulsa for academic competitions (speech, debate, college bowl), BTW was good, but Jenks and BA were A LOT better. Again, this was back in the '80s, but I bet a whole lot hasn't changed.

Scotty lives in Bartlesville and was more or less "run out of" Bartlesville because of his coaching style. So the next year, he went to Pawhuska and left there to go to Union. They didn't like his coaching style very much either, so he got run out of there.

He wasn't ran out for his coaching style. When the head coach is replaced, which was the case at Bartlesville and Union, the new coach usually brings in his own coaches. Some coaches are kept, but it's pretty obvious he wouldn't be kept at Bartlesville since he had the job that the head coach's son wanted. Not that it matters, but he went from Bartlesville to Union with no Pawhuska in between.

Ended up at Booker T and was taking his "Godson" to Booker T because he thought "an incoming freshman could choose where he wants to go". Riiiiight....

I've been somewhat confused as to what the issue is, so I may be wrong, but I think the issue is not that the student was going to BTW, but that he was getting rides from out of the district from a coach. Correct me if I'm wrong, but he would've been fine if he drove himself or had a parent not associated with the school drive him.

Wow, They are a blue ribbon high school, a top 100 high school, and I am pretty sure the only school in the state to have an Academic Bowl National Championship.

Nice "award"

[The program requires schools to meet either of two assessment criteria. It recognizes schools that have at least 40 percent of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds that dramatically improve student performance in accordance with state assessment systems; and it rewards schools that score in the top 10 percent on state assessments.

Of the schools submitted by each state, at least one-third must meet the first criterion of having 40 percent of the students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The program allows
both elementary and secondary schools to be recognized in the same year. ]

Union also has a higher percentage of schools on the needs to improve list than TPS.
I still think BTW is impressive. Drop the Jenks staff into BTW and what will you have...BTW. Jenks parents actually do parent and pay for ACT classes and all of that. I'm not claiming that they are the greatest thing since sliced bread, but they are legit whether we admit it or not. Do you think 40% of the students from Jenks are disadvantaged?

As did I.

It became a magnet school because SCOTUS f***ing told them to.

50% White, 49% Black, 1% "Other :texan: ." 1973.

"Other" always cracked me up.

When I was there, Cascia realized they could reduce tuition for all the 3rd teamers and go out and dominate 2A, 3A, whatever minor league 7 on 7 they were playing at that point.

The newly reported violations will result in the forfeiture of the varsity Washington vs. Miami football game - which used 16 ineligible players, including seven starters.

That's quite impressive. That would be about half the starters on most high school teams.

This school must be amazing academically.
