In honor of Baylor’s homecoming this weekend, I’ve put together some fun, facts, and figures about Baylor that you may not know. Why do this on a Sooner board? Well, it wouldn’t make sense to do it on a Baylor board now would it?
So, in no particular order, here we go:
1. Baylor is the oldest university in the state of Texas. It was chartered by the Republic of Texas in 1845.
2. Baylor is named for its founder Judge R.E.B Baylor. Judge Baylor was, among many things, a Congressman from Alabama and strong supporter of Andrew Jackson. Every bear mascot, by tradition, has the first name “Judge” in his honor.
3. Baylor President (the greatest in my estimation) Rufus Burleson was the personal minister of Sam Houston and even performed his baptism. Sam Houston’s walking cane along with a gold sword presented to Judge Baylor’s brother by President Andrew Jackson are part of the university mace used in various school ceremonies (primarily graduation).
4. Baylor was originally located in Independence, TX, but was moved to Waco and merged with Waco University. The women’s college at Baylor split off and moved to Belton where it was renamed the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor.
5. The only native-born Texas general in the War Between the States was a Baylor graduate by the name of Felix H. Robertson.
6. More Texas Governors have come from Baylor than any other Texas university.
7. Proportionate to the number of graduates in the state, Baylor has a larger % in the Texas legislature than any other university.
8. Baylor has the largest homecoming parade in the nation.
9. In 1927 most of our basketball team was killed on their way to play UT. An oncoming train hit their bus and 10 players were killed. They are recognized each year at the freshman mass ceremony known as, “The Immortal Ten.”
10. The bear mascot was chosen via competition and narrowly defeated the “Book Worms.”
Here’s a list of some famous Baylor graduates and/or people with Baylor connections. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Baylor_University_people
And for your viewing pleasure, here are some scenes of campus. If you're in the central Texas area then drop by Waco sometime. Take a tour of the campus, go to a Baylor game, spend your money, send your kids to school here. Learn to do the Sic 'Em Bears and fling your green and gold afar!
