EL PASO -- For just the first time in school history, ESPN will broadcast a UTEP football game in the Sun Bowl today, though there have been three ESPN2-televised home games.

ESPN2 showed the Texas game last season, UTEP's double-overtime victory against Houston in 2005 and a loss to Wyoming in 1995.

Television is a fairly new thing for UTEP. Prior to Mike Price's arrival in 2004, the Miners had been on television three times: 1988 against Wyoming on CBS, the 1995 Wyoming loss on ESPN2 and the the 2000 Humanitarian Bowl loss to Boise State on ESPN.

Since Price's arrival, which coincided with a proliferation of smaller cable outlets such as College Sports TV and CBS College Sports, UTEP has played in 46 television games. The Miners are 21-25 overall on national television under Price and 1-4 this season.

This will be the ninth time that UTEP has played on the ESPN family of networks.

"We have a great corps of people who come to our games," athletic director Bob Stull said. "We have the best crowd in Conference USA and the loudest crowd."

Price said, "If you can't get up for this game, you can't get up. We're keeping it kind of low-key, but if you come by practice, you'll see a lot of energy out there. The players have really responded well to our coaching. They believe in what we're doing, and they're going to go out and do it."

Administration buildings on campus will close at 3:30 p.m. and tailgating areas will open at 4 p.m. The stadium opens at 4:30 p.m.

Series history

Going back to their time together in the WAC, Tulsa represents one of UTEP's longest-running conference rivalries. The two actually played five non-conference games against each other from 1988 to 1995 before Tulsa joined the WAC in 1996, and the schools have played every season since, except 1998.

Tulsa leads the series 10-7 and is 5-3 in El Paso, though UTEP has won the past two at the Sun Bowl. Tulsa won 77-35 last year in a game that was 28-28 at the end of the first quarter. UTEP won 48-47 in 2007 in its last home meeting with the Golden Hurricane. Home teams have won five consecutive games after a stretch where the visiting team won 9 of 12.

Odd day

This is the third Wednesday game that UTEP has played under Mike Price, and the first regular-season Wednesday game. The Miners lost to Colorado and Toledo in bowls in 2004 and '05.

This is the ninth time UTEP has played on a non-Saturday under Price and only the second time at home. UTEP beat Houston in 2005 on a Friday.

UTEP is 4-4 under Price in non-Saturday games, most recently losses in the bookend games of last season -- an opening Thursday loss at Buffalo and a closing Friday (day after Thanksgiving) loss to East Carolina.

McClure's time

True freshman Marlon McClure has been one of UTEP's top playmakers the past two weeks, and Price says his role will expand.

"Expect to see Marlon McClure more and more every game as he learns our offense," Price said. "He's from a small town, Tenaha, Texas, with a population of 800 or 1,000 people, but he has no fear. He's not intimidated by anything. He has gained 10 pounds of muscle in the short time that he has been here. At that rate, he'll be 190 pounds as a senior, because he weighed 140 when he came here.

"I don't care, because Howard Jackson (UTEP's second all-time leading rusher) wasn't that big of a player when he was here."

Dude I went to my first OU home game ever, this year (been to several away ones.) After seeing my beloved Sooners in all their glory kick the crap out of Baylor. Watching the Pride come onto the field. Hearing Boomer Sooner a million times. Hanging out with the best fans in all of sports. Meeting the nicest people I have ever met in my life. After my trip..I made a vow to move to OKC as soon as I can. How on earth could I attend a bloody UTEP game with a bunch of drunks who know as much about football as the federal government knows about living within a budget?
