View Full Version : Any Tips For Stopping Dogs from Digging?

They got out for the first time today...not sure what made them start digging today. Its a pretty big yard. I was thinking of getting concrete block or concrete bags and lining the inside of the fence. I have also thought about a shock collar but they dig that much and we would have to wait awhile to catch them digging.

Bury broken glass around the fenceline.

That and shoot on sight.

What happened to the good ol electric fence?

Run a wire around the bottom of your backyard fence and run an electric current through it.

Problem solved.

Our dogs used to do that. We finally had to lay down chicken wire all along the bottom of the fence.

Barb wire works as well. Hopefully you have no tykes.

electricfy the bottom, not with some lame fence charger from petco or petsmart, but 110 right from your house. They will bump it once, maybe twice then they stay the heck away from it.... and then you can turn the current off until they start digging again, then turn it back on....

either that or take the fence down, pour a conrete footer along the bottom, put fence back up....

my problem is my 30 pound brittany can scale a 6 foot wood fence with the rails on the other side, he goes right up the smooth side like he was climbing a wall....

I put my dog's nasty-*** landmines in any hole she starts on.

She gets the hint very quickly to find another hobby.

We bury their poo in the holes they start, and we buried concrete blocks along the edge of the fence. Since we have to leave them out sometimes while we're away, we got a radio fence, and it works like a charm.

Since I did most of the work, maybe I should tell, hmmm NP? ;)

We have a wooden privacy fence that is only buried 6-12 inches deep and the boards are all rotting at the bottom anyway (we didn't put it up).

The radio fence was done after a lot of other work. Like any other form of technology, it's fallible. The dogs chew their collars, the power goes out after some storms and sometimes the fence just goes out occasionally and needs resetting. As such, I recommend....

1- Rebar. Target the spots your brats target the most and pound 16-24 inch rebar stakes into the ground. Our dogs will not dig if they encounter the rusty, ouchie edges of these things.

2- Top soil. Fill in the holes around your new rebar stakes. The element of surprise when your dog paws a stake will ensure it stops digging in that area immediately.

3- Concrete slabs. The variety that are two inches thick, 6 inches tall and about 16 inches wide from Lowe's landscaping area is what I used. Even out the group with top soil, then slide/push the slab between your rebar stake and your fence.

4- Decorative rock. In areas where it is hard to plant stakes or that you don't want concrete slabs lining, decorative rock will deter your dogs. Keep far from areas you mow and garden.

5- Poo burying. It doesn't work as well as "experts" like to say it does. I've had my dogs eat bird seed or squirrel corn and then watch the seed and corn grow up despite the digestive system. It's weird and kind of gross and it shouldn't be your first option. Notice how I'm listing it LAST.

Most importantly of all, you have to deter them when you spot them in the act. Our dogs are afraid of water. They get squirted between the eyes when they get caught in the act.
