Going into this tournament, there was concern about the US backline.

Ultimately, it was one of their fatal flaws, along with not being able to finish.

Anyway, I thought we really missed Charlie Davies today. He would have finished chances that Findley created. Also, I don't wanna see Ricardo Clark in a US shirt again. Edu and Torres are both clearly better than him, and I'm sure top MLS mids could outplay Clark. Just starting Clark (as I expected) meant we would need at least 2 goals to win today. The lenient yellow 2 minutes after his turnover made the decision that much worse.

Honestly, I'm not sure the USMNT keeps Bradley either. It's atypical that international managers last more than 4 years, even ones that win the World Cup.

6/26/2010, 11:30 PM
Unless we know there's a veteran coach that can teach offense interested in us, I think we keep Bradley. This was a TON better than the last World Cup for us.

We need to get some of our younger players (I'm looking at you, Altidore and Edu) some experience in non-US leagues. Going without Charlie Davies hurt, and not having Gooch at 100% hurt a lot too.

Why in the hell was Damarcus Beasley not on the field? I think he's got better game speed than a lot of our guys.

Both the guys you named play in Europe. Edu's league probably isn't much better than MLS though. Still, I rather take a regular on the Scottish champion than someone who plays in 2. Bundesliga any day.

Yea but weve been hearing that the player pool is growing for the last 3 WCs. Bottom line, in 02 we overachieved, in 06 we busted, and this year we did about what we needed to do. We were borderline not even making it to the knockout stage and borderline making a run.

I think in 14' this young team could be really good and I think we need Donovan for one more run, he is one of the best US soccer players ever

Take heart US fans. Our squad had a much better World Cup than England did.

I can at least understand why the US backline was bad.

I have no idea why England's was. I mean, yes, they had Jamie Carragher back there. If you're a Liverpool fan like me, you know he just came off one of the worst seasons in his career and have been questioning Fabio Capello's decision to name him to this squad for several months now.

word. And is there a more pompous and stubborn and inept sports organization than FIFA? They have absolute control over the planet's single most popular sport, yet don't have the sense or the balls to take simple steps to get things right.

Exhibit A - The Jubulani ball that has a mind of its own: AFTER the WC, they "think they might" have a look at it.

Ex. B - The WC refs were mostly inept, to be kind. In addition to simply hideous decisions against the USA (2), England, and Mexico, the ref in the USA v. Slovenia game was obviously way over his head and had no control over the game. That's well beyond the usual and normal errors in human judgment.

Ex. B(1) - They refuse to give significant help to the single ref who is required to watch 22 player and the ball at once while chasing the ball up and down the field for 90 minutes. They don't need 47 referees like the NFL, but a couple on the touch lines wouldn't bog down the game. And it's obvious taht many players are happy to take advantage of the overworked guys, deliberately trying to fool them whenever they can.

Ex. C - They refuse to use even the simplest replays to get things right. How long would it have taken from someone with a view and a radio microphone to have told the ref that Lampard's goal was in or that Tevez was yards off-side v Mexico. And then there was the whole Thierry Henri fiasco - an obvious injustice that they refused to rectify before the WC started. Even cricket and rugby use replay, folks !

Ex. D - They claim to detest "simulation", but fakers and divers and cheap cheats continue to debase the game with impunity, provided they can dupe the overworked ref. FIFA and the leagues need to be able to review game videos and punish offenders with fines and suspensions after the fact.

In sum, these global jerkfaces make the NFL, MLB, NBA & NHL look like model organizations of purity, fairness, and wisdom.
FIFA = Fools & Idiots F***ing All

MLS has one more expansion club to hand out for 2012 before they should stop and let the existing clubs grow. I think they should move Chivas USA to New York or Miami and rebrand them and give the last expansion spot to whichever city didn't get the relocated franchise. MLS needs to get back into the Southeast.

The problem with the first two Florida franchises was lack of ownership and no stadiums, and those seem to be the problems now. I've been reading up on MLS history - it was created as part of an agreement with FIFA the last time we hosted the World Cup.

There have been two franchises in Florida, if I recall correctly. Both failed. As someone mentioned, ownership and stadiums is a big part of that. MLS no longer owns and operates franchises, I think. Soccer-specific stadiums really help rake in the profits.

The ones turning profits are Seattle and Toronto. Toronto was expected to fail and even had an agreement to be the only Canadian MLS franchise for several years. However, it has turned out to be an incredibly (and profitable!) success and Toronto is supporting the start of new Canadian franchises immediately. I think Vancouver and Montreal are the target cities.

I was just saying the Oklahoma soccer franchise thing as an offhanded comment. I know that we'd be one of the last cities to receive one. The new franchise fee is like $40 mil now!

I hope MLS continues to expand and gets more profitable. It's fun to watch. I really get a kick out of the franchise names that are playing off foreign clubs. DC United... Real Salt Lake... Toronto FC :D

Detroit has surfaced in the round of teams on the short list supposedly.

It's funny how people seem to be so ready to say how much they dislike soccer, or dislike league soccer. Those on the fence I'd implore you to watch a Barcelona match from beginning to end. They play a system that is basically soccer's version of the triangle offense. Their passing and player movement is in smaller groups of triangles (to a degree) and it's a motion offense style of play. They've been so successful with that style of play that the Spanish National Team has tried to alter their play to accommodate it, due to the large number of Catalan players on the roster.

Personally I think the best thing about most soccer games is that I can fit them into my schedule. It's a lot easier for me to sit and watch Real Madrid/Barcelona than it is to watch Red Sox/Yankees...at least with the soccer game I know when it'll be over, and it doesn't run a chance of taking half the day away.

I love soccer for the atmosphere (I also happen to be a WWE fan, and my favorite matches often depend on how involved the crowd is).

Vuvuzelas aside, it simply amazes me what soccer crowds will do to keep the energy level high for 90 minutes (plus some stoppage time and halftime, of course). The songs, the drums, the scarves (even in summer?!), it is just fantastic.

And Badg, I think at least one or two of those club names are because the European sides are part-sponsors of the team. I know Real Madrid actually had a hand in Real Salt Lake for a while there, even to the point of Real Madrid coming to the US for exhibition games, and the Madrid players helping out with youth camps and such.

Chicago Fire just helped facilitate a union of youth clubs in New Orleans. They have also done it in Jackson, MS and I'm sure in many other places. I'm not sure how involved the MLS club will actually be (probably not much), but without their umbrella, these stubborn New Orleans clubs never would have agreed to merge. It was long overdue, and it creates a great situation for everyone: The serious talent is no longer diluted among 3 smallish clubs, and there's a greater pool of players to form good lower level teams that just don't want to commit to too much travel "& stuff".

When England plays it's as slow as chess, and some of the players can only move in certain directions or one square at a time.... :(

Recovering chess nerd here (been mostly clean for 15 years!) and there is a very good reason for this -

When you're the chess king, you can only move one square at a time.

And as we all realize, every English futbol'er thinks he's king. :D

The title "Real" (Spanish pronunciation: [reˈal]) is derived from the Spanish language where it is traditionally used by certain Spanish football clubs such as Real Madrid of La Liga. It is translated into English as "royal" and it is taken by teams that make the King of Spain an honorary member of the club.

Dave Checketts and SCP Worldwide partners Dean Howes, Kenneth Munoz, Michael McCarthy, and Chris Bevilacqua chose Real Salt Lake for the team's name because they desired to associate the team with a successful soccer club, Real Madrid, as well as to develop a brand that was clearly associated with association football.

The choice of Real Salt Lake was initially met with derision in the fan community, as many fans thought the name should more accurately reflect the Salt Lake area.[citation needed] Other team names considered were Salt Lake City Highlanders, Salt Lake Soccer Club, Alliance Soccer Club and Union SLC.[4] However, in the passing years, criticism from local fans and the media has waned, and the club has instituted a formal relationship with Real Madrid.[5]
and further down....

As of September of the 2006 season, Real Salt Lake and Real Madrid have signed a 10-year co-operative agreement. Among the provisions of the deal are a biennial friendly match between the two teams to take place in Salt Lake City, annual February training for RSL at the Real Madrid practice facility in Spain, and, perhaps most importantly, the creation of a $25 million elite youth academy in SLC that will train up to 200 players from ages 12 to 18.[15] The academy, a co-operative project for which Real Madrid will pay half the cost, will include academic facilities and dormitory housing, arguably becoming the first true soccer "youth system" in MLS, along with the Red Bull Academy effort of Red Bull New York. In this sense, it is part of a growing league-wide trend toward the emphasis of youth development, a trend which has been encouraged by the main office and jump-started by the league's decision to allow individual teams to maintain rights to the products of potential youth development systems.

Yeah, RSL wasn't actually associated with Real Madrid at first. They just chose the name because a successful club in Europe had it. So lame.

Who? Sepp Blather ? I won't re-rant about FIFA, but it is important for the press to continually bash them for being blind, backwards, and arrogant, because sometimes even the Almighty FIFA listens (or at least pretends to).

I only saw on Sky Sports last night that FIFA had actually forbidden someone from conducting further RESEARCH on goal line technology. Galileo was lucky back in the day when he only had to deal with the Catholic church instead of FIFA.

My problem with Germany (and Argentina) is their defense. Neither team has shown the grit in the back third that Brazil has up to this point. I think Brazil has the capability to shut down pretty much anyone they come across, and I don't think that holds true for Germany or Argentina.

The only thing South Africa would have going for it is the fact that the Olympics have yet to be hosted in Africa. It is what really helped push Brazil ahead of Spain for the last Olympic bid, even though a longtime committee member really wanted his home country to be declared host. Too bad for him, South America pushed the equality issue to the end... I'm sure it didn't hurt that they're in the same time zone as NBC :D

DeJong missed the ball by YARDS and planted his foot high and right into Alonso's chest. If that wasn't "deliberate" as a matter of law, it was so blatantly reckless that he should have been tossed immediately. In any game or time other than fairly early in the WC final that would have been a red.

Thierry Henry signs with MLS's NY Red Bull****. Very interesting. Good for the league, I'd say. He's 32; is he admitting that he's over the hill by signing with MLS ? How will he do? Pretty well, I thinks.

Considering he lost his starting position at Barcelona last year... probably yes.

But he's probably still as good as, if not better than, anyone else in MLS.

Scott D
7/16/2010, 04:43 PM
To be fair, Henry had to compete with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Lionel Messi, Pedro Rodriguez, and Bojan Krkic for a starting spot at Barcelona...Pedro came out of the gate on fire last year to put Henry on the bench, and the addition of David Villa this offseason and now Adriano from Sevilla pretty much was the writing on the wall for Henry.

And you can't really blame Barca, every other striking option for them is at least 4 years younger than Henry (Zlatan). The true writing on the wall was when he was rarely even an option for that idiot Dominech on the national team.

Since I'm a believer that national team coaches should stick around only 4 years at a time at most, I hope he signs at Fulham. I'd like to see what Dempsey says about him publicly though.

I'm not necessarily eager to see Bradley out. BUT...I'd rather see an American coach succeed in England, and I'd still like to see Klinsmann coach Team USA, though neither is extremely likely, especially the Klinsmann thing.

Well I guess "Bradley to Fulham" bypassed "Klinsmann to team USA" on the Ain't Happenin' list. Fulham is taking Martin Jol.

At one point, Klinsmann really wanted to coach Team USA, and as far as I know, that hasn't changed, which is why he hasn't gotten back into coaching; he's waiting for the spot to open up. I like Bradley and I think he's the best coach the national team has had, maybe ever, but I'm not sure he could take us to the next level, while I think Klinsmann has a much better chance.

What was the reason Klinsmann didn't take it before? Didn't he want to be in complete control of the team, and US Soccer didn't want to give him the executive authority on top of coaching?

Yeah, Gulati didn't want to give him that much control. Hopefully he has changed his stance. Klinsmann could do so much for soccer in this country.

Indeed.

Scott D
7/17/2010, 10:03 PM
yeah, Spurs ran him out of the country pretty hardcore. A job like Fulham might be more on his level though. He's always struck me as a guy who can do a little more with less, and lower expectations with less pressure. Spurs think they're a top side, so he had to overcome that.

Squad for the next set of friendlies:

GOALKEEPERS- Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Tim Howard (Everton)

DEFENDERS- Carlos Bocanegra (Saint-Étienne), Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover), Clarence Goodson (IK Start), Chad Marshall (Columbus Crew), Jonathan Spector (West Ham United)

MIDFIELDERS- Alejandro Bedoya (Örebro), Michael Bradley (Borussia Mönchengladbach), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy), Maurice Edu (Rangers), Benny Feilhaber (Aarhus), Jermaine Jones (Schalke), Sacha Kljestan (Anderlecht)

FORWARDS- Edson Buddle (Los Angeles Galaxy), Robbie Findley (Real Salt Lake), Herculez Gomez (Pachuca)

No Dempsey or Gooch. Jermaine Jones gets a nod.
