Boise State (5-0) at Tulsa (4-1),8:00 EST, ESPN, Wednesday, October 14

Why to watch: No. 6 Boise State has one significant hurdle left to a perfect regular season and one notable opportunity to showcase its program in front of a national TV audience. Both will occur on Wednesday night at Skelly Field. As the stakes begin to rise, the Broncos feel as if they have something to prove, especially after delivering a lackluster performance in a 34-16 win over UC-Davis. If there’s any hope of evolving beyond just your garden variety BCS buster, Boise has to play much better than it did two weeks ago. Tulsa had hopes for a major bowl game, too, before getting blanked by Oklahoma in September. The Hurricane has reground, but has yet to play an opponent with much credibility or prowess. It remains one of the favorites to win Conference USA, and would revel in an opportunity to steal some of the Broncos’ mid-major thunder.

Why Boise State might win: It’d be easy to just assume that this is the same Tulsa offense from the last few years. It’d also be wrong. Set aside lightweights, like Sam Houston State and New Mexico, and the Hurricane has been rather ordinary. In the last two games with Rice and Oklahoma, it’s managed just 27 points and has had loads of problems protecting QB G.J. Kinne. Life won’t get any simpler with the Broncos marching into town. Boise State leads the WAC in total and scoring defense, playing especially well when the ball is in the air. Kyle Wilson is a lockdown corner, and linemen Ryan Winterswyk and Billy Winn are going to make life miserable on the Tulsa O-line. Oh, and that Bronco offense is pretty good, too, averaging 45 points over the last four games.

Why Tulsa might win: While no one is suggesting a defensive scrum when these two meet, the Hurricane D has been underrated and overlooked all season. Yeah, it’ll give up yards at times, but it’ll also make big plays in the form of turnovers and stops behind the line. Tulsa will look to disrupt Boise State with a frenetic unit that leads Conference USA in sacks and is second in turnover margin. It’ll create pressure the traditional way, with linemen Un'Tavious Scott and Cory Dorris, or turn loose LB Mike Bryan and S James Lockett. The Broncos have shown a vulnerability to the run in games with Fresno State and Bowling Green, which should mean more touches than usual for backs Charles Opeseyitan and Jamad Williams.

Who to watch: Although Tulsa likes to attack on defense, Boise State has yielded only three sacks in five games. The winner of this battle on the inside will go a long way to determining the outcome. If LT Matt Slater and the Bronco line can continue to build a wall around QB Kellen Moore, he’ll play catch all night with Titus Young and Austin Pettis, carving up the Hurricane with surgeon-like precision.
What will happen: Expectations are high. The nation is watching. Boise State loves this sort of venue. The Broncos are going to expose some of Tulsa’s deficiencies, which have been cloaked during the softer portion of the schedule. With time to operate, Moore will get help on the ground from Jeremy Avery and Doug Martin, and efficiently pilot the offense to long drives. The defense has enough speed and has had enough time to prepare for a Hurricane offense that’s been more sizzle than steak, especially in the red zone.

Agreed. Voters will remember Boise beating the same team by 7 that OU beat by 45, and keep them no higher than 4 or 5 the rest of the year. Whenever someone in the top 4 loses, they will fall, and another team (possibly with a loss on their record) will leapfrog BSU, just like VTech did this week.

I went to the game with NP and a few others from the Tulsa area, OU alums, TU alums, TU current students, etc.

The game absolutely was awesome at the beginning, trading scores.

Then, there was this big void lasting through most of the rest of the first half into the second half.

Then, TU scores a third touchdown! Yay! Crowd excitement!

This energy continued until that 4th down pass. GJ Kinne got hit when he threw it, so I don't blame him entirely for short changing the receiver that was maaaaad open.

That GJ... the rest of you all saw it against us... he can scramble for first downs easily, but he sure has a lot of trouble finding an open receiver before the o-line crashes and he gets sacked.

One thing's for d@mn sure... Bois Estate did not go out of this game looking like the No. 5 team in the country. B.S. University went out looking like punks that got lucky. Blame the weather, blame the weird scheduling (Wednesday night on the road, wtf...), but they all look like the b!tch that got punched by the Oregon running back... talking a lot of trash, then getting knocked to the ground in one blow.
