For those who don't know:

In a rain-soaked 1984 game, Texas entered the game ranked #1, Oklahoma #3 (#2 in some polls). OU coach Barry Switzer wore a ballcap during the game that read "Beat Texas." This game also marked the only time that future UT head coach Mack Brown participated in the Red River Shootout not as a Texas Longhorn (Brown was OU's offensive coordinator). Texas jumped to a 10–0 halftime lead but OU rallied to lead 15–12 in the game's closing seconds. With 10 seconds remaining, trailing by 3, Texas was driving and was within field goal range but decided to take one more shot at the end zone. Texas QB (and future North Texas head coach) Todd Dodge appeared (in replays) to be intercepted in the end zone by OU's Keith Stanberry, but the officials ruled it incomplete. Texas's Jeff Ward subsequently kicked a field goal and the game ended in a 15–15 tie.

Both of the major cogs in that play for the Sooners, Keith Stanberry and #6, Andre Johnson, were involved in a car accident after the Kansas game a few weeks later. Neither were ever the same.

Definitely. Fast, physical safety with height. He would've been a great one.

Those games with Miami in the coming years may have been a little different.

Not even close to the Oregon call, which ranks with the 5th down play at Missouri. In Oregon, there was replay as well, and the Sooners were still cheated.

Closer to the Texas Tech false spot and tipped pass interference noncall.

Still remember watching the game in my apartment across the alley from O'Connell's. 3rd floor.

I had to miss the game that year because I was in Marine boot camp in San Diego, but something happened afterward that I'll never forget.

That afternoon, after the game had ended, I was chosen along with another recruit to go to another part of the recruit depot to pick up a floor buffer. This big Hispanic sergeant, who looked like he probably dined on broken glass and barbed wire, asked us what we wanted, so I yelled out our orders in proper Marine recruit fashion.

Upon hearing the distinctive twang in my voice, the sergeant asked if I was from Oklahoma or Texas. I yelled out, "Oklahoma, sir," and figured I was about to get some version of the old "steers and queers" line from him.

He surprised me, though, when he asked if I knew what had happened in the game. I told him I did not, and he let out a sigh and rolled his eyes. He then proceeded to tell me just how the game ended with pure disgust in his voice. He threw in lots of effing Texas this and those effing Texas refs that. Then, he told us where to get the buffer that we'd came for, and then told us to get out of his sight.

Now, this might not sound like much to you unless you've been there and know how Marine recruits are treated by pretty much all Marines on the base except for the chaplains. However, I walked away feeling a mixture of revulsion at what had gone down in the game and pride in the fact that this supply sergeant had taken the time to let me know what happened. It was somehow better that way than reading it in the LA Times that they gave to all of us on Sunday morning.

The sergeant didn't tell me why he was so disgusted by the outcome. Maybe he'd just lost a bet. But, in my mind it was because he was a hardcore Sooner fan, and it felt good that someone else on that base hated Texas as much as me.

That's the only time in my life I've ever hit my TV set, I hit it so hard it never worked right after that.

The Oregon call was absolutely worse, but it took a long time to unravel. The * play was so obvious and so immediate I think it was harder to watch happen, especially with the ref standing right there and deliberately making the wrong call.
