Guys this is some cool stuff going on in Oklahoma education. Thought you would be interested in some of the ways schools are trying to inspire creative thinking.

My parents are heavily involved with the Odyssey of the Mind program (a creative problem solving competition for K-College) and have been since I did it from 5th grade into undergrad. I went to the world finals twice. This is a cut/paste of the items from the email that was sent out.

Anyway, if you get a chance check it out.

If you did not get the chance to see ReCreating America, it will air on OETA on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at 9pm. Please forward this email to people you believe would be interested. Links to the programs discussed in the film are in this email as well. The film can also be seen at http://creativity.oeta.tv/ after the premiere on October 13.

Recreating America: Creativity And Learning
Premieres Tuesday October 13, 2009 @ 9:00Pm On OETA

InCA Productions and OETA announce the premiere of the first program of ReCreating America, a three-part documentary series on creativity in America. For much of its history, the word "America" has stood for the brightest ideas, the most resourceful solutions and the most provocative insights. Is this still true today? The film explores the importance of creativity in education by highlighting four schools in Oklahoma and assessing how the state's teachers are attempting to teach and promote creativity: Educare Preschool in Tulsa, OK: serving a low-income, at-risk community; Flower Mound Elementary School in Lawton, OK: integrating the arts into the entire curriculum with the A+ Schools initiative; The Odyssey of the Mind creative problem-solving competition at Piedmont Middle School; Santa Fe South Charter High School in Oklahoma City: helping students overcome the challenges of poverty and the high drop-out rate in America’s urban high schools. The program asks teachers, parents and national experts: what appear to be the most effective ways to promote creativity, while still teaching the three Rs, and even improving test scores?

My teams always KILLED people on the spontaneous competitions. Mainly because we were a bunch of random-*** wackos.

I've never heard of any of these programs. I debated in MS/HS though...made it to regionals every year and won state my senior year.

There was one academic program that I went to though, and I can't remember the name of it. I can't even remember exactly where it was held (I've had a lot to drink since then), but basically every HS had their department heads pick the best student in each subject to compete against each other by written exam. In other words, each school would have an english, math, biology, chemistry, history, etc. representative. I was chosen as the history rep. for FTG, and I ended up placing 2nd. Some ********* from, if I remember, Skiatook beat me.

I think our school only participated in this thing once though because I had never heard of the competition until I was chosen, and I never heard about it afterward. We were told it was state-wide, but I think it may have just been regional.

The really ****ty thing is that only a couple of us placed from FTG, and the school counselor didn't want to wait around for the awards ceremony so we had to have our medals mailed to us. :eyeroll: I hated that woman. Annoying as hell she was.

I think we got one of those the year we built a giant, rotating, lighted sign to identify our team. And then the motor crapped out at the competition, so I wound up walking in circles around it to make it spin. :D

That was the same year you had the kickass podium. And I'm pretty sure that was the year you guys made it into the video.

you also got an Omer award the year with the pool balls because you guys loaned your retrieval devices to the judges.

Perhaps if you had had access to these programs when you were in high school, you might have been better prepared for college and capable of obtaining your bachelors in fewer than the seven years you've been plugging away at it so far. ;)

Of course. But he'll have a BA in political science or some other made-up discipline and no job. So he's got that going for him. Which is nice.
