It seemed when we had good gains on 1st down (between the twenties) Coach Wilson really put the hammer down and the offense ran really fast especially in the second half. I wonder why he approaches second and 8 so differently from second and 2 as far as tempo goes.

He almost always looks like a great OC against the blind sisters of the poor. Against good teams not so much. Same thing with down and distance -- he basically "nuts up" when the pressure is on him.

I didn't know he even suits up.

He doesn't, but he does sometimes call the offensive plays...

...that is when he's not curled up in the fetal position because we happen to be in a close game with a good team. ;)

What?

He is the OC and he directs the tempo of the offense. I am not critiquing the effort or play calling but just stating an observation. It was obvious to me that on short down and distance the tempo in the second half was really good/fast. I am just curious why it changes?

[Edit]

Maybe it is a clock management thing, trying not to hang the D out to dry.

When we get inside the 10 we might as well huddle. The tempo rarely seems to work down there.
