How many times does our running game need to get stuffed inside the 10 before KW realizes it may not work. I would die to see play-action on first down.

Me too. Particularly now that opponents KNOW we're gonna run. Then again, we seem to have pass probs in the red zone too.

Collier11

guess we have your stunner shades on, I am seeing a wildly inconsistent team who makes a nice play then has a penalty or a missed block or a dropped pass

I am just getting irritated by the lack of discipline on this team this year because I see that as something a coach can fix and its not getting fixed

They aren't running a hurry-up offense, the play clock is around 5 on most snaps. Receivers catching the ball when it hits their hands would be a big help.

People, particularly media members, have been saying that ever since the game last year. Why??? The only thing I can think of is that they forget Stoops also coached 1999 or something. We need to scrap the no huddle offense for this year. OUr defense is our strength and we cannot have them tired as hell in the second half of games.

The no-huddle is no excuse for defensive breakdowns. Not with all of the TV timeouts in college football. There's plenty of time to "catch your breath. Cutting out the delay of game penalties and being able to change up the play according to the opposition's defensive lineup, cutting out the stupid timeout usage... there's still plenty of reason, namely gaining experience to keep your system.

Anybody want to bitch about the defense?

Just like always, you miss the point. Our defense looks great against teams that can't exploit the obvious weaknesses. You think blowouts against Tulsa, Idaho State, and Baylor (seriously?) are evidence that this defensive scheme is awesome. Then we'll probably get pasted for 4-5 TDs next week and you'll say, "IT WAS THE OFFENSE...THE DEFENSE WAS TIRED!!!"

Here's to you being happy with the offense getting shut down in the red zone by Baylor. Oh, let's not forget the dropped passes. Yeah, it was a really impressive game played by OU today on offense.

i'll say this. even though the performance wasn't as polished as any o us would have liked, i did see progression throughout the game and most of the "mishaps" are things that could be remedied as this team goes on. i think it is difficult to find a consistant rythym when you have 2 diffent QB's in 5 games. not taking away anything from the QB's but it's hard nonetheless. i will say that Sam seemed to have more time to throw the ball in the second half which is a good sign, but the O-line needs some definate work in the red zone. FG's will not cut it as we go through the season.

the D gave up some big plas, but the came through when it mattered. i still think the defensive scheme needs to adapt to that middle screen and the quick pass over the middle. we all know * loves the play with shipley.

i will say that it was nice to see Sam stay in there even when he knew he was gonna get hit. he seemed a little rusty--maybe some of those overthrows and floaters were a mental thing where he was not following through completely on his throws. it completely understandable being weary about your shoulder in your first game back.

also, how about Jimmy Stevens? although we never like settling for FG's, he had no problem taking care of his duties!

i treat this game as if it were our first game of the season...get the rust off, and improve every game. the sky is the limit!

Did I say I didn't see any positives? You're just assuming that I can't. There were positives and negatives today. The negatives will cost us games down the road if they're not fixed. And, they're the same negatives that have been plaguing the team all season.

I'm excited about the upside of these receivers. Miller, Caleb, Kenny, Reynolds. Not to mention Broyles coming back. If we could run Miller at a Flex TE....... :)

The D wasn't what I had hoped to see. But I did notice that in the 2nd half once the O started supporting them with TOP there were fewer errors. Don't know if that is really the story or if they got their tails chewed in the locker room at half.

Anybody think we will see McFarland and Granger rotate in against UT? We really need Granger back to take some pressure off the DTs.

If we are going to beat UT we will need a lot more energy and intensity.

To win against teams like Miami or BYU, and for the D to BE ABLE to make a stop at the end of the game when necessary. That's been the argument all along, not that we can't stone teams like Baylor and Tulsa.

And I wasn't complaining about THIS defensive effort. I was just saying that you were missing the point of the defensive argument in the first place.

goingoneight
10/10/2009, 08:50 PM
They want every rushing play buried for a loss of one on I-formation sets, five-yard losses on shotgun runs, QB sacks on every passing play and any pass that leaves a QB's hand picked off. They want negative points on the opposition's scoreboard. They want the secondary to never have to leave a five-yard cover scheme because the defensive line perfectly disrupts the snap every play. No excuses.

boomersooner28
10/10/2009, 08:51 PM
But you CANNOT put those losses on the defense. They gave up 14 points in both those games (1 TD vs Miami they got it at the 10 yard line). OUr offense HAS to be able to score.

(Especially 1st and goal 4 times against BAYLOR, coming away with 4 field goals. unacceptable.)

Collier11
10/10/2009, 08:52 PM
this game was typical of why we lost against byu and miami and it got blamed on the D, if Baylor was any good they would have hung in today because of our lack of discipline, dropped passes, not scoring in the red zone. But it woulda been blamed on the D cus we woulda lost another 21-20 game or something like that

The offense does have to score, but the defense also has to make a stop when the game is on the line; how hard is that to fathom? Overall i agree the defense didn't play badly in either loss, but you can't ignore the fact that they didn't get it done when it was needed.

CrimsonJim

This bend-but-don't-break defense will continue to wear down late in games against quality opponents because that "style" of defense keeps them on the field too long. That is all.

The D played fine the WR's had 11 drops in the first half!!! WR's need to be consistant! I know they are young but some of the drops are crazy. 3 drops in the endzone during the game for crying out loud Sammy would have over 400 yards passing if they had caught the GD ball! I really hope that the WR catch enough and are consistant enough to score next week. The D is actually fine but if your offense only has the ball for 3 minutes in a qtr how the heck do you expect the D not to be tired?

10/11/2009, 02:23 PM
C'mon, everybody. We all know that we never lost close games when Mike Stoops was at the helm. Safeties never bit on play action, never got beat deep. Our offenses had nothing to do with it. When we couldn't get it done back in the Mike Stoops era on O, our D ALWAYS stepped up and beat everybody. We never lost a game, did we? Undefeated in the Mike Stoops era thanks to D, right?
