I suppose it will be great for the alcohol industry if it is turned over to kids at age 18.

I honestly think paying poor people to not have kids would have a better economic impact.

Hey, don't laugh at $500. With 18 years of compounded interest, it'll pay for at least two college textbooks.

It's the whole giving people money without them doing anything to earn it that I scoff at.

If they want to encourage saving, quit taxing us on interest we earn on our savings. They've already taxed the hell out of it before we even get it.

And add mandatory birth control for people receiving welfare. If you can not afford to take care of yourself, your rights to procreate are on hold.

i don't really see the point in this. you already get more than $500 a year in tax breaks per kid, don't you? this seems like chump change

Each newborn gets a $500 savings account to go along with their $150,000 share of the national debt. Sounds like a great deal to me.

STUPID!

This already happens in Maine, about 3 years ago the Harold Alfond estate guaranteed $500 for every newborn in Maine. Maine is a small state and has a lot fewer newborns to pay for, the big difference is this comes from PRIVATE resources instead of nanny state funds. That makes all the difference since this is gift to the citizens of Maine from a private citizen and not a forced taxpayer dealio.

Edited:

It was only 2 years ago and here are the details.

Nope, IMO if you can't take care of yourself then you shouldn't bring children into the world that others will have to pay to support. Why is that harsh?
