Apparently Stafon Johnson suffered an accident in the weight room in which bar fell on his throat. He is being rushed to the ER.

Sounds pretty serious.

I want to make sure this is true. Someone just told me this and I'm awaiting a link. You never know with some people.

If it is true, thats a bad deal. I have witnessed a few weight room accidents can be serious. Its important to have good spotters.

Not sure it is true. Which would be great news.

They just mentioned something about it on ESPN.

Sounds kind of serious.

Apparently it was bad enough to require surgery this afternoon. Not good.

ESPN reporting that he was bench 275 lbs when his right hand slipped off of the bar. There was nothing the spotter could do in that case, except to try to pull it off of him as soon as he can. With that much weight, he is lucky it didn't break his neck.

4 years ago I had 315lbs slip out of my hand and land on my chest, and I wasnt injured, but hearing about this lets me know how blessed I was that nothing happened to me.

This just shows how fragile life is, and how quickly and unexpectedly things can be taken from us. Prayers go out to him and his family.

If he was pressing up 275 lbs and one hand suddenly slips, one spotter can not do much but try to pull it off of him. When you are leaning over someone, it is nearly impossible to grab the bar as it falls and keep it from hitting the person. It is just an awkward angle to lift that much weight. When I was in high school we had people lifting this much and it usually takes 3 spotters to keep the person from getting hit with the weight....1 behind, and 1 on each side (those 2 catch the weight). Free weights can be dangerous, but normally things like this don't happen. Freak accident.
