View Full Version : Miami has the "swagger". We do not.

Debate has raged on this site over the last two weeks whether this OU team has any swagger, or has had any swagger since Mike left.

Several have argued, rightfully, that our OU teams even with Mike Stoops "swagger", blew several important games... NU 2001, LoSuR 2001, LoSuR 2002. So maybe swagger is overrated....

Maybe.

I can't give proper definition to "swagger", I can't teach a kid to have it, I'm not sure it can be captured. But I do know it when I see it. It is confidence +. And confidence can be built. But that + has to come from one of the deeper bowels of the human soul.

Miami has it. We do not.

That should end the conversation, but it doesn't because of one other thing I have noticed about this Miami team: they are blazing fast. When they came to Norman two years ago, I was worried about them because of that famed South Florida Speed. Which, for that team, turned out to be a myth because they just didn't have any. Turns out all of it went north to Gainesville.

But it has been actively recruited back to Miami. And now they are toying with what otherwise would be considered a good football team.

With our offensive line in the shape it is in... with us down to one receiver....

Folks, our 13-15 lb. goose appears to be stuffed, fattened, slaughtered, de-feathered, cleaned, marinated, and roasted slow over hot coals for 3-4 hours.

Swallow hard.

Pinch your nose.

This season ain't gonna be pretty.

(But we have 2010 to look forward to with all the experience gained.)

Miami does look good but, GT looks like doo doo. I know some of that has to do with the Miami D playing good assignment football and the Miami O calling a very balanced game. But GT hasn't looked good to me since the 1st half of the Clemson game. On offense they are wiffing on downfield blocks and on D there seems like there is no effort at all.

Miami has looked good in both games, BUT the GT game is hard to judge. GT did look like doo doo, BUT Miami did attack the middle of the field. With RR third knee I do think that we need to see ALOT of Box! OUr d-line has got to play alot better than they have thus far! We need a #2 wideout quick and in a hurry, the bye week couldn't of come at a better time IMO! What all that I think we got a good chance with Sam or Landry at the helm but we need long drives that end in POINTS! It will be fun? :O

GT is one dimensional so when they fall behind they are in trouble, they also looked really slow.

Its not that difficult for a team with a little talent to defend against a one-dimensional team like G. Tech. The difference is we actually throw the ball and we have athletes that can catch and run with the ball.

Florida State was tearing Miami up and they nearly lost on their home field to Jacksonville St. I don't even think FSU has a shot to beat BYU. Miami's defense has not been challenged "half" as much as they will be against us. That's even without Sam.

I will take our defense over their offense. There is little chance they score over 20-21 points at most. I don't think they can hold our "inexperienced" offense to under 30 IMO. They have athletes but they aren't sound.

Jacory Harris looks very, very good. He makes all the right reads. He doesnt try to force the ball into coverage. He checks down well. He has a freakin awesome offensive line.

And he can also scramble, which he hasnt even really had to do very much of yet. He's got great down field vision. In the Big 12, he's easily the #3 QB behind Bradford and Colt McCoy

9/18/2009, 02:42 AM
Well, GT is grossly a one demensional team. Hell they ran the same three plays all night... QB fake hand off to FB an try to run around end... QB fake hand off to FB and run around end and then pitch... QB hand the ball to FB. When they did pass they had more success. And they had costly flags. But again Miami's D did look strong against a one demensional team. Now with that being said, all we need is a couple of WR's to start making plays and we are good... with Bradford or not! Coach Wilson has a full week off to come up with a offensive plan to target their weaknesses and Coach V needs to plan on bringing some heat to put this R freshman on his butt! Its hard to throw with McCoy and Travis Lewis in yo face for 4 quarters!

Crucifax Autumn
9/18/2009, 03:22 AM
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Quit all the predictable blitzes, pressure with the front 4, and stay in man coverage and force them to make the catches in coverage and we will bury their asses. We have been doing these dumb blitz packages and crappy zones where we come up AFTER they already have the ball for too long. The very idea that we waste these great athletes by sticking them in zone coverages is just embarrassing and shows a lack of faith in the great athletes we've been recruiting for the last 8 years.

Desert Sapper
9/18/2009, 04:21 AM
We're not going to switch out of zone coverage. We've been running some form of zone since before BV took over the D.

We do have a shot at Miami, even in their house. We need to play very angry on D. We need to play with a sense of urgency on O. If we dictate the tempo, we will win. If we let them dictate the tempo, we won't. This team plays best when it is loose, flying around the field, and unafraid of making plays. It is at its worst when the QB is looking to the sideline to make changes to the play at the line, the D is stiff and unsure of themselves, and the entire team has confidence issues (pretty much a goodly portion of the BYU game). Bottom line is that 'swagger' happens when players feel confident in themselves and the gameplan. When they don't think they will win, they know it.

I think we'll see plenty of 'swagger' against Tulsa on Saturday.

It's easy to make reads when your wr's are running free in the secondary. On their 1st td pass the safety of GT for no reason at all started running away from Miami's WR. Our zone will put an end to all the slants and deep balls Miami depends on. If your offense only lives by big plays eventually you'll fall apart when you have to be patient and methodically take the ball down the field.

Got to get past Tulsa, but Miami looks darned good. GT doesn't have the defense that OU has, so that should be interesting. Think it'll come down to whether OU can move the ball on Miami. The 'Canes are definitely playing with confidence, and they have an ace QB. They should feel good about themselves, but they haven't come up against a defense like OU's yet. FSU did pretty good, but those intense rivalry contests are difficult to judge.

GT was playing their third game in 12 days. They missed more tackles and let UM wr's run around uncovered all night. Their AD should have his head checked to schedule 3 games in 12 days.

FSU barely beat Jacksonville State.

UM has one QB and one good hit changes their whole team. He has seen little or no pressure and throws lobbed balls all over the field. If your secondary has any speed at all, there should be picks to be had.

This is one Floridian that will be in your corner when that game comes around. Hate that thug school and their whiny arse coach.

It always amazes me the volume of BS that comes
out of the mouths of the talking heads.

Miami is riding high because they beat one average team
(FSU) and one pretty poor team(GT).

The Miami QB locks on to his primary receiver noticeably .
VT will expose him severely. I just hope Brent pays attention
to what the Hokies do.

If we can't confuse and confound a freshman qb with an extra
week to prepare then I may hop on the anti-Venables bandwagon.

OU plays like garbage on the road, and Miami is looking good. It will be a hella game. I agree that Miami has the swagger and we do not. that is what happens when you lose your first game of the year, tough to bounce back.

I'll tell you what, we'll make a deal. We'll put a hurtin' on that skinny QB of theirs if you make Kiffykins cry this weekend. :D

We need to take care of business with Tulsa before looking at Miami. If we get upset this weekend the Miami game won't really matter. I do like our chances against Miami though. We will get pressure on Harris unlike the weak GT D line. It's easy to move down the field when your qb can't camp out and pass down the field all day without a scratch.

Miami being highly ranked when they play us is a complete win-win.

We get a higher ranking if we win and theoretically don't drop as far if we lose.

However, remember Miami is getting this ranking by beating up on the ACC.

Jacory Harris looks good because his receivers are wide open, and the defenses he's played can't cover. Miami's receivers are ok, but not nearly so good to justify how wide open they've been. Harris' passes have no zip, Miami has played nobody, and they barely survived a really crappy FSU team. Miami will lose at least 4 games this year. OU will hand them their second loss, after Virginia Tech beats them next week. I'm just hoping you give them a real beat down to silence the talking heads and their band wagon fans.

Of their 4 game start, this was BY FAR their easier two games. First, an overrated and distracted FSU team, and then a mid-week, night-game against a GA TECH team that plays no defense. VA TECH in Blacksburg, especially if it is a night game, will be insane. OUr game will, as some on here think, be the first game back with Sam. If this is the case, it is a bad spot for the U. Right off of a tough conference road into a game with us.

engineer24

It's easy to make reads when your wr's are running free in the secondary. On their 1st td pass the safety of GT for no reason at all started running away from Miami's WR. Our zone will put an end to all the slants and deep balls Miami depends on. If your offense only lives by big plays eventually you'll fall apart when you have to be patient and methodically take the ball down the field.

Disagree. Jacory Harris looked great on his checkdowns. He wasnt just throwing up deep lobs all game. He threw a bunch of crossing routes and screens to his backs. One of them in particular can do major damage--#2 with the dreadlocks. Dude is a threat to house it at any time and he's faster than anybody on the OU defense. He's also a threatening return man.

Ryan Reynolds will get absolutely lost on those crossing routes over the middle. He cant cover jack and he'll get eaten up by Miami's slot WRs and TEs

Yup, we recruit good athletes and then stick them in a soft cover 2 zone. It's retarded.

This thread needs to go! OU has swagger! It is hard to reboung after a week 1 like we had. Heisman QB goes down an untested QB comes in. The team has to respond to that. Seriously, Miami may be better than last year and 2007 when we played them but they are not going to not lose 3 or more games this year. I can see OU winning the rest of their games even thumping saxet!! Our coaches have gone through these kinds of stuff and still managed to win the Big XII! Actually, 2005 our D was not as bad *** as this one and in 2006 we had a third string QB come in and play hell he played great considering our record that year so if I look at Stoops as a bad *** coach as he is and take his record I know we are going to be fine even in Miami. Also, I think that OU should be more fired up about the saxet game because we LOST last year sheesh!!! F Saxet in a good way!!! :D

I'm as big a Sooner fan as anyone, but we don't have any freaking swagger. Some of you homers can say what you want. We have swagger against the Big XII, but the last few yrs against ranked teams outside the Big XII, shows our swag doesn't scare anyone.

Rankings from SoonerStats.com

2009 - 20 BYU Lost 14-13
2008 - 1 Florida Lost 24-14
2008 - 24 TCU Win 35-10 Home game
2007 - 11 W.Virginia Lost 48-28
2006 - 9 Boise St Lost 43-42
2006 - 18 Oregon Lost 34-33
2005 - 6 Oregon Win 17-14
2004 - 1 USC Lost 55-19
2003 - 2 LSU Lost 21-14
2002 - 7 Washington St Win 34-14

All of these games since our Championship. 3-7

We have to come and freaking light people. Just because we dominate the Big XII, other Conf and schools don't give a rip. They come to stick it us.

Why would we want our players acting like thugs that haven't been there before? That crap is totally disgraceful. Ostentatious displays of jackassitude belong with teams like Miami. I would prefer to beat them and let the scoreboard do the talking.

Fired up, emotional performances are okay, as long as you don't act like a ****tard on EVERY play. It's also okay to help other players up, hand the ball to the ref, and walk back to the huddle like that 25 yard gain for a first down is just part of what you do...and it's not a big deal because you'll do it again, and again, and again.

If swagger is confidence, I want to see it. If swagger is theatrics, they can leave that **** on the bus.

He said it hurt all season basically (until Dec) but a quarterback is expected to deal with it and lead his team playing through the pain. He also said he felt the best Saturday because the anti-inflammatory meds they gave him :).

Said that SB should be fine to play, as the qb he needs to be back and play with the pain if he isnt having the surgery, said he will probably have to get a shot in his shoulder every saturday but thats what being a QB is all about, no chance of injuring it worse
