What's all this Cinco de Mayo crap then?
A minor Mexican holiday (in the State of Puebla) made into a drinking holiday by the US importer of Corona beer.

From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinco_de_Mayo)
Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for "fifth of May") is a regional holiday in Mexico, primarily celebrated in the state of Puebla, with some limited recognition in other parts of Mexico. The holiday commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín.

The Battle was important for at least two reasons. First, although considerably outnumbered, the Mexicans defeated a much better-equipped French army. "This battle was significant in that the 4,000 Mexican soldiers were greatly outnumbered by the well-equipped French army of 8,000 that had not been defeated for almost 50 years." Second, although countries in the Americas have been attacked since May 5, 1862, (Falkland Islands, Pearl Harbor, etc), no country in the Americas has been invaded by an army from another continent since then except for the brief occupation of two of the Alaskan Aleutian Islands by the Japanese army during World War II.

Cinco de Mayo is not "an obligatory federal holiday" in Mexico, but rather a holiday that can be observed voluntarily. While Cinco de Mayo has limited significance nationwide in Mexico, the date is observed in the United States (also voluntarily) and other locations around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. A common misconception in the United States is that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico's Independence Day, which actually is September 16 (dieciséis de septiembre in Spanish), the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico.

My wife is of "Texican" ancestry (her dad says they have always been in the same area of West Texas, the border moved on them) and she had never heard of it until moving to Austin in the late 80's. Evidently the Midland/Odessa and Lubbock areas didn't partake in the festivities until recently. A friend in Laredo said that it has always been a big deal down there.

no, it's the world wide web.... and you chose to click on my transparent title.

But who cares? Hey if Mexico had not gained independence, we really don't know for sure how the future would have played out. If Spain had fought harder to keep control of Mexico, they very well might have fought harder to keep the Texas and California territories as part of Mexico.

This is what the U.S. looked like when Mexico gained independence:

http://www.1930census.com/Maps/1810_us_outline.gif

Why had it not been for Mexico's independence, who knows, you might need a passport to attend the OU-Tejas game!

...and Olevet and others in li'l Dixie might be just a stone's throw from the border.

If the Greeks had...
If the Romans had...
If the Germans had...
If the Japanese had...

There are lots of theoretical scenarios that would make things different today. What is your point?

People are ultimately responsible for the government they have.

And I've been there about as often as her citizens who are here have gone back...voluntarily.

That's my point, ... while it's a slow process, they have affected change. The people chose not to elect a PRI president in the last two elections.

The transportation infrastructure has improved significantly since the 1990s. So has access to water.

You're out of touch on the issue, Sic.

From the mid-'70s until now, Mexico has gone from an average of six children per child-bearing woman to two. -- no thanks to the pub's Mexico City Rule which discouraged family planning services in developing countries.

Those with resident visas tend to go frequently. those without visas can't afford to go back. But I interpret your answer to mean, you haven't been recently.

If I were to see a thread titled, "Happy Birthday SCOUT!" or "SCOUT's goin to Drunkytown" or "The 10 most interesting people working in HR" ... I likely wouldn't click.

No reason to be skeered. I strongly support one's first amendment rights, including burning a flag,... as long as he's the rightful owner of the flag.

Now if he stole the flag from someone else, then I strongly support the rightful owner's 2nd amendment rights to bear arms. and shoot his a$$ off.
