That little alt-rock band from Athens, Georgia sure had some great albums. Going back through their catalog one album at a time, I forgot how solid Reckoning, Fables Of The Reconstruction, and Lifes Rich Pagent were. These are the classic albums they put out right before they turned "commercial" and even then still not quite fully commercial, which to me is always a good thing.

Today's listening is the album Green. This is pretty much the one that put them on the map (going double platinum) and caused a two year tour that physically wore out the band and nearly retired them for good.

Every song on this album is solid and really showcases the maturing writing ability of Stipe and Buck. I remember the first time I ever heard Orange Crush. It was during an episode of 21 Jumpstreet of all places. Great song.

Orange Crush lyrics:

(Follow me, don't follow me)
I've got my spine, I've got my orange crush
(Collar me, don't collar me)
I've got my spine, I've got my orange crush
(We are agents of the free)
I've had my fun and now it's time to serve your conscience overseas
(Over me, not over me)
Coming in fast, over me (oh, oh)

(Follow me, don't follow me)
I've got my spine, I've got my orange crush
(Collar me, don't collar me)
I've got my spine, I've got my orange crush
(We are agents of the free)
I've had my fun and now it's time to serve your conscience overseas
(Over me, not over me)
Coming in fast, over me (oh, oh)

High on the roof, thin the blood
Another one came on the waves tonight
Comin' in, you're home

We would circle and we'd circle and we'd circle to stop and consider and centered on the pavement stacked up all the trucks jacked up and our wheels in slush and orange crush in pocket and all this here county, hell, any county, it's just like heaven here, and I was remembering and I was just in a different county and all then this whirlybird that I headed for I had my goggles pulled off; I knew it all, I knew every back road and every truck stop

(Follow me, don't follow me)
I've got my spine, I've got my orange crush
(Collar me, don't collar me)
I've got my spine, I've got my orange crush
(We are agents of the free)
I've had my fun and now it's time to serve your conscience overseas
(Over me, not over me)
Coming in fast, over me (oh, oh)

High on the roof, thin the blood
Another one climbs on the waves tonight
Comin' in, you're home

High on the roof, thin the blood
Another one climbs on the waves tonight
Comin' in, you're home

(Ah, oh)

great band -- similar to pearl jam in that they had their brief moment of mainstream, but have somewhat stayed beneath the radar and only truly admired by their loyal fans.
