In Sunday's Oklahoman Tramel gave his lis of Top 10 OU QBs as follows

10) Jimmy Harris

9) JC Watts

8) Jamelle Holieway

7) Jack Jacobs

6) Eddie Crowder

5) Jack Mitchell

4) Sam Bradford

3) Jason White

2) Josh Heupel

1) Jack Mildren

While I may quibble with the order of this list I think SEVEN of Tramel's picks are dead-on(at least in terms of being Top 10 QBs). There are however THREE that I disagree with - Jack Mitchell is a great player BUt only played QB sporadically at OU,Royal was the primary QB,Mitchell was at HB.Mitchell is more noted as a return man.It was his long standing NCAA record of 7 punt returns for TDs that Perkins broke.Great player yes, great QB, not so much.Eddie Crowder was a solid starter for 2 years but not known as a gifted passer or runner.JC Watts was a gifted optioneer and made some big pass plays but not quite Top 10 IMHO.

The three players I would add to the list? Steve Davis- bulldog runner, outstanding wishbone operator and made some big plays passing the ball.He laso was 32-1-1 as a starter with 3 conference titles,2 National titles. Bobby Warmack-The Wicked Worm, was an outstanding leader, one of the best OU passers of the 20th century. My final addition to the list is Claude Reeds. Many of you I am sure are thinking who the heck is he?Some of you who know the name may say he wasn't a QB.While it is true he is listed as a FB,it should be noted that in Owen's offense of the early days the FB called signals and threw the ball.Reeds was credited with trowing for over a MILE (1760 + yds) in a single season(1915(I think).

My list looks thus:

10) Jason White-accrate,great arm,bad knees
9) Bob Warmack-Big talent on mostly average teams
8) Claude Reeds- great passer of the early days
7) Jack Mildren-Father of the Wishbone
6) Indian Jack Jacobs-True triple Threat at QB
5) Jamelle Holieway-IMHO the best Wishbone QB ever.
4)JJosh Heupel- Less gifted than most but GREAT qb.
3) Jimmy Harris-Leader of THE UNDEFEATED
2)Steve Davis- Preacher Man was 32-1-1 as a starter
1)Sam Bradford-Rewriting the recordbooks.

The order of MY TOP 10 is UNDISPUTABLE,mostly because it is alphabetical.I tried to do it by simply rating the qbs but EVERY time I made a list,I changed the order.IMHO these are the Top 10 qbs in OU history,I honestly have no idea what order they belong in from 1-1o.

This list is bogus if it doesn't have Nate Hybl on it. :)

Steve Davis is probably the most under appreciated QB in Sooner history.

what about Dean Blevins?

what about Dean Blevins?Blevins IMHO does rank as the #1 backup Qb in OU hstory. He came off the bench on sevearal occassions to lead OU to crtical wins ,OU-TOSU 29-28 1977 for example.

I would think Jimmy Harris would have to lead that list seeing as he never lost as a Sooner.

Heupel is too high and where the hell is Steve Davis?

Widescreen
9/1/2009, 10:51 AM
I think Heupel is in the right spot given that he basically put the team on his shoulders and showed them what it took to win. I give him as much credit for our resurgence as I do Stoops.

Troy who? Only Troy I know is Johnson and he was a stud DE.

Honorable Mention - Hunter Wall as the best fake punt catching OU QB.

Those lists are missing a lot of players.

Game 1 in 1996 (Too many QB's used to list them all)
Game 2 in 1996 (See Game 1 in 1996)
Game 3 in 1996 (see Game 1 and 2 in 1996)
Game 4 in 1996 (see Game....well, you see where this is headed)

Jimmy Harris 10th?

No Steve Davis?

JohnnyMack

Steve Davis is in the top 25 of all-time rushers and went like 31 and 1 as a starter. WTF?

Sam Bradford is an easy #1.

Do you have a link to this list?

This one here kind of disputes you a bit. I'm not calling you out, just weird that he would be so complimentary of Steve Davis here and then leave him off the list entirely:

No linkybut this list was in Sunday's Oklahoman. While it does seem odd that Tramel would praise him to HIGH HEAVENS and ignore him thereafter you have to recall this is Barry Tramel we are talking about.

This is the same guy who said Holieway was the worst Wishbone passing QB(for the record Holiway iis#1 in passing efficiency among ALL wisbone QBs at OU).

Tramel also said losing Bomar was like the Titanic hitting an iceberg, yet Bomar's replacement ( Paul Thompson)lead us to a Big 12 title.

Tramel also used the Titanic comment about OU when AD got hurt against ISU.OU of course went undefeated in AD's absence.

Tramel writing inaccurate or inconsistent articles is an old story.

Tramel is likely a raging alcoholic who can't even remember his own name most days.

The most athletically gifted yet underutilized QB at OU was Eric Mitchell, from Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Had he been in school at almost any other time he would have been a star.

i agree. hybl had the worst o-line in recent history and still led us to a bcs win.

No, you're forgetting the 05 Oline: Sieve like. The 01 line was probably just as bad as 02's. If J White had his same qb style as he did in 03 and 04, he would have looked just as bad as Nate did at times, but he could wheel more effectively which is why he looked better.

Jdog
9/1/2009, 11:16 PM
Disagree -
I would have the Heisman guys at 1 and 2
then the Nat'l Champs with best record.
Beyond that - you have the Godfather and the rest are in a tie.

I wouldn't include Aikman because he didn't play enough games -

If Bradford wins a championship, then he will be the #1 OU QB.

Why?

Collier11
9/2/2009, 01:34 PM
If SB wins a national title I would go with him, he has it all!

Pro Potential: Check
Heisman: Check
Every single OU passing record: Check
Big time winner: Check

Very few qbs can tout every intangible and he can if he wins it all

9/2/2009, 01:39 PM
Just ask the experts and then check next years draft.

What does that have to do with being the greatest Sooner QB? Mildren ran the option better than anyone yet he wasn't a high draft pick in the pros.

Heupel has to be top 5 because if it wasn't for him we'd have had Brandon Daniels tossing 30 yard post patterns in '99. Heupel was a godsend for a program in transition.
Just go back and watch the 2000 k-state game in Manhattan.

Also, Bradford needs a bowl win.
