I have some beautiful artwork on my walls and I could not be more happy about it. Proud Gonzo, you, just made my home, my life a better place.

I didn't want a frame on it, just bare canvas and the gallery didn't understand that. They were going to go fix it and and I just couldn't stand for them to take them down and take them away.

Yeah, I'm in love with you, PG. I would marry you tomorrow if you'd have me. Marry me instead, PG!

The paintings are stunnng and beautiful and I could spend the rest of my life looking at things through your eyes. Nevermind, I've got my little two paintings that you've been kind enough to share.

Actually, I'm now told the I have to venerate the monk painting.

Oh, these are pics of the two paintings.

I like the monk one.

That second one, I'll call it "blue boy's butt" for reference, could not possibly be more stereotypically the sort of art one would expect to see in the home of a person who happens to be...well, you know. NTTAWT. Just sayin';)

I have no idea about what is stereotypical. But, that was the opposite of what I wanted. Personally, I like art that is original and interesting. I like something that elicits feeling, even if it is abrasive or shocking. And, I like to sponsor local artists. If that is a gay thing, then that’s not a put-down in my books.

Yeah, the monk painting is my favorite too. Proud Gonzo couldn’t have known that the pic I sent her was the monk blessing two US naval officers, one of whom was the daughter of my best friend. She couldn’t have known that the monastery was located on the seaside port of Pattaya. The sea and sky painted in the background so perfect. She pasted in gold leaf on the monk’s hands and in the sky and it just highlights the blessing being performed. Buddhist have to be immune to the environment, but it shouldn’t stop them from seeing the splendor and joy and taking heart at that. The motorcycle taxi gang I had over yesterday kept talking about the painting being religious for them and how I should venerate it. Well done PG, you got a few Thais talking about worshipping the ideals presented in your painting.

The “blue butt-boy” painting is maybe not what you think. It is from a pic of my former friend, who died of AIDS. It is a tribute and obviously very personal for me. He would want to be remembered this way and I have no doubt that many will find that crass and in poor taste. I really don’t care. It is on my walls and I have to thank PG for bringing out a beautiful human being in loving way that some of you may not appreciate.

So fine.

Bro,

Here's a tip.

If you have a painting hanging in your home or office that's sole focus is the unclothed back and a$$ of a d00d, and you are a d00d...that's ghey. To the nth power. As in the Village People and/or Liberace. Just sayin'

P.S. Have you seen "The Birdcage" starring Robin Williams and Nathan Lane?

Thanks for the tip, Homey. I had not realized that.

I sent PG several photos and she selected these two. The whole deal started because of her skills in painting the beautiful human body form came up and I wanted to support her. The contrast of the two could not be more striking or poignant. They belong together. The insight and artistic license she took was incredible and amazing. I have no doubt that you shielded your eyes to the subject matter and that’s a pity. But whatever. Still, it is the point about art.

Picasso produces some beautiful paintings that are both physical and spiritual, historic and modern. Why would anyone put one of his paintings of a half naked Native American man on the wall if they are not gay?

What if the painting is of a gigolo, a bodybuilder and a hustler? What if he liked to do things that you cringe about, but it made him happy?

We can fall into neat little stereotypes if you like. Or, we can just be ourselves and celebrate life and art.

The point of this thread is to give props to PG because love the material or hate it, she is an incredible artist.

PG, this is fantastic work. You very clearly captured what your client wanted and captured some things that hadn't been communicated. That's a real talent.

Bao, thanks for sharing the stories behind the paintings.

Some of you need to show some goddamn manners. This is art created by one of the SO family for one of the SO family, not some kitschy bull**** bought from a coffee shop.

Somewhere on here are a couple paintings PG did for me. Of course mine are of cattle, but the "spirituality" is certainly there.

Just call the blue butt painting "Dr. Manhattan" If people do not get the reference giggle at them... and then they will be so put off by the fact that they are not the ones laughing in this situation involving a blue butt that you will have the upper hand.

Indeed. The day I brought him home he charged out of the trailer, heard the neighbor's bull beller, ran over there and took out the fence, whooped the neighbor's big red limousin into a pulp in the corner of the pasture, turned around and sniffed a young heifer, and commenced to pounding the cow **** outta her. One of the kids goes "dad, we need to name him Mike Tyson." I go "why?" He said all he wants to do is fight and ****.

My wife is more dignified though. She calls him "Michael."

So if he knew what the difference between a bull and an ox was, he wouldn't respond well, I'd guess. :P

finster: go **** with someone else's art.

The title fo the monk painting is "Davy's Water Blessing" and the second is "Exhibit 13".

I like painting with blue, ok? It's always the first color that goes on the canvas. That's why my fiance bought me a blue diamond.

Thanks to chuck, especially, I really appreciate it. I'd like to hear more about your conversation sometime. I'm interested in what you all had to say about the monk painting. That's a huge compliment, thank you.

Oh, but it has right here in River City, AKA Conroe, TX. A few years ago, an ultra-conservative group petitioned the owners of a shopping center that's designed in a classical Italian manner with reproductions of famous statues to put a plaster fig leaf over David's manly parts. Never mind that the statue is at the very top of the center and aforementioned manly parts could only be seen with high-powered binoculars. Our county was subject to ridicule from coast to coast, and rightfully so, I might add.

Beautiful work, PG!

Sorry to offend kiddo. Please realize however, one might reasonably consider the blue butt painting pornographic. The definition of pornography is simply "media or photographs showing erotic or sexual behavior in a way designed to cause sexual arousal." Pornography is protected by the free speech provision of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, unless it depicts a child, or is found to be "obscene." And as to "gay", well, Chuck himself posted earlier about the subject describing him as a "gigolo, a bodybuilder and a hustler" who "liked to do things that you cringe about, but made him happy."

However, as others have observed in this thread, it probably wouldn't be considered legally "obscene material" because according to a Supreme Court decision, material is "obscene," and hence not protected by the free-speech provision of the First Amendment if it has three elements; 1) It must have prurient appeal, as decided by the average person applying the standards of the community; 2) it must portray sexual conduct in an offensive way, and; 3) it must be lacking in serious artistic, literary, scientific, or political value.

Clearly, it has "artistic value." Therefore, it wouldn't likely be considered "obscene material" and therefore be unprotected by the First Amendment. But I wouldn't expect such an image could be displayed in a public place here in Oklahoma without drawing a fair amount of protest and/or criticism.

I dunno. Whatever. Again, no offense intended. Perhaps you're right. Just because Chuck posted it, presumably inviting comment, I shouldn't have taken the bait.

Someone wound up the arteest.

May I offer a couple thoughts/suggestions?

Art (as you know) is all about interpretation/opinion/taste/etc. It screams for comment - both positive and negative. What one person loves, another person loathes. As a young, talented aspiring arteest, may I humbly suggest you take all comment on your work as constructive comment - unless somebody is just being an obvious dickhead?

I love my blue bull. People never come in my house without going "wow, that's cool, who painted it?" I love the calf painting even more. Both completely capture the facial expressions/personality of both of those animals.

I like Chuck's paintings too. If we all didn't know about Chuck's lifestyle choice and about Nope, not a single comment would have been made about the second painting - other than "wow, that's cool, who painted it?"

Anyhow, try to grow a thicker skin concerning your work. Bottom line is if it makes you happy, and it makes the purchaser of your work happy, **** everybody else.
