Barkley named Trojans' starterComment Email Print Share Associated Press

LOS ANGELES -- Freshman Matt Barkley has been named No. 4 Southern California's starting quarterback.

Coach Pete Carroll unexpectedly announced his decision Thursday, several hours before practice and two days before USC's mock game.

Barkley was perhaps the nation's most sought-after football recruit last year. The Orange County native graduated from high school one semester early to participate in spring practice at USC.

Sophomore Aaron Corp was named the Trojans' starter out of spring ball, but Barkley took advantage when Corp missed two weeks of workouts after breaking a small bone below his left knee Aug. 10.

Barkley is thought to be the first non-redshirt freshman quarterback to be picked to start a season opener for the Trojans

Dear Mitch Mustain's momma,

You should of STFU and your son would be starting at an SEC school in a pass oriented offense.

verifying that would require actual reporting and some investigation and thats just too much work

They probably don't keep track of that crap, but this makes it newsworthy, not that a top program naming a froshie starting QB at a program that prides itself on making talent sit and wait for years isn't newsworthy in and of itself.

well, she completely sabotaged his career at arkansas with her phone calls and constant bitchin about why her boy didn't get to throw the ball 40 times a game despite having felix jones and darren mcfadden in the same backfield....when her phone call conversations and stuff got out, it was all over

Hybl beat out White for the starting job. Not saying Hybl was bad, but White was the better QB.

I don't take anything serious from a guy who still rocks a Conway Twitty hairdo, circa: 1975.

You all thought thought the Tebow love-fest was irritating.

Oh, and on one hand I think he's gonna have a great year if he beat Mustain AND Corp, but OTOH, methinks Pete may FINALLY be in for a true rebuilding year. Maybe with two new coordinators, 10 new starters on defense... he's figuring they'll just tough it out this year with a newbie-QB. The PAC 10 is still bad enough they might end up 10-2 again, though. :D

I didnt read through everything yet, this might already be mentioned, but someone posted a list of the college quarterback rankings and Corp was number 10? This makes sense...

Mel Kiper justs put Barkley No. 1 on his big board.

Along with 20 other players. Thus, every one that isn't drafted No. 1 will be considered a "steal" and the team that gets said "steal" will be worthy of uber praise

Barkley will be the No. 1 pick in the 2012 draft. Forgone. Conclusion.

I happen to think it's pretty cool that he's the first true freshman to start for USC. Especially considering that he beat out Mustain and Corp in the process.

Right now, there are 2 teams that said they will draft Mitch Mustain in the 5th round, even if he doesn't throw a pass...

JLEW1818
9/1/2009, 11:35 AM
heard a guy on ESPN say this the other day, and it actually made sense...

Last year, they had a 5th pick in the NFL draft QB, they had a better defense then this year, 3 LB in the top 2 rounds of the draft... The schedule was favorable

This year, Freshman QB, the Defense is not as good, the schedule is not favorable..

3 losses regular season is possible

but some how , some way, usc will still win a share of the Pac 10 title... (tOsu loss would not be be a conference loss)
