It looks like the usual right-wing "humor" based on hyperbolic fear and sometimes just a complete misunderstanding of the other side's intentions. Which ever side of the political spectrum you are on, it's just bad humor. The same kind of thing could crop up from the left about how in 2019 gay people are being executed, etc. Even though conservatives tend to be against gay marriage, it doesn't mean they advocate the death penalty for anyone that is gay. When you take some political position and take it to some extreme like that, way past the actual intention of those who advocate that position, it's not funny or absurd; it's just stupid strawman arguments disguised as humor.

White minorities still trying to have English recognized as Mexifornia's third language.

I don't know if anyone on the right is seriously worried about California being annexed by Mexico (to believe that a country as powerful as the US could actually let that happen is quite ridiculous). This to me just seems to be playing to the fears of the Racist Right that "them brown folk from Mexico are taking over 'our' country!"

First, this country isn't "ours." It's a country full of immigrants and their children. This country was founded on principles of immigration (Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore, send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me); and don't pretend that illegal immigration vs. legal immigration has anything to do with this (I'm pretty sure legal immigrants from Mexico also speak Spanish).

Secondly, Mexicans/Spanish can't take over this country, because white people never owned it in the first place. Even if Hispanic people are some day 80% of the population, so what? They have just as much of a right to come here legally and speak Spanish as your white ancestors that came over here legally and spoke English. The English language just happens to be the language of the majority of the people that live here. There is nothing special or American or superior about it.

Couple petitions court to reinstate heterosexual marriage.

The intention of the left (whether you agree with it or not) on the issue of marriage is to extend those rights to gay couples. Liberals see this as an issue of equality. The point isn't, and has never been, to wage some kind of war against heterosexuals. Why would anyone do this? How would this in any way be even close to politically wise, given that heterosexual people make up at least 90% percent of society?

This is part of the ongoing pattern I see among the christian right to treat any position that advocates equality regardless of religious belief or seeks to be all-inclusive (keeping church and state separate, or more mundane issues such as saying happy holidays instead of merry christmas at wal-mart, etc) as a scheme to destroy Christianity in this country. The point of all of this is to treat everyone equally. The point is that Christians should not be given special treatment because they make up a majority of this country. There is no war on Christianity. Similarly, there is no war on white people, no war on rich people, no war on men, and no war on heterosexuals.

George Z. Bush says he will run for President in 2026.

So a new member of the Bush family that will be born some time between now and 2026 will be old enough to run for president? I'm not even going to mess with this one.

Postal Service raises price of first class stamp to $17.89 and reduces mail delivery to Wednesdays only...

So the Postal Service's price for a stamp goes from 3 cents to 44 cents in 150 years, but we're supposed to believe it will go up to $17.89 for some reason in the next tens years? Right...

Sounds like it's just trying to promote the idea that government is too "inefficient" to run anything. I don't know about you, but 44 cents to have somebody pick up an envelope for you and deliver it to someone on the other side of the country sounds pretty efficient to me.

Massachusetts executes last remaining conservative.

... pretty much what sums up what is so lame, unfunny, and uncreative about this thing.

Supreme Court rules punishment of criminals violates their civil rights.

Yeah, because them there libruls sure want to stop punishing criminals. Wow, this thing is getting stupider the farther you get into it.

IRS sets lowest tax rate at 75 percent.

This seems to fall in line with the idea that tax rates have been steadily increasing over the years. Though I'm not an expert on this, I'm not sure that's the case. I would like to see proof of this. Just take a look at 1953-54. The bottom bracket was 22% (it is now 10%), and the highest bracket was 92% (it is now 35%).

According to wikipedia: "Hauser's Law is a theory that states that in the United States, federal tax revenues will always be equal to approximately 19.5% of GDP, regardless of what the top marginal tax rate is. The theory was first suggested in 1993 by Kurt Hauser, a San Francisco investment economist, who wrote at the time, "No matter what the tax rates have been, in postwar America tax revenues have remained at about 19.5% of GDP." In a May 20, 2008 editorial in the Wall St. Journal, David Ranson published a graph showing that even though the top marginal tax rate of federal income tax had varied between a low of 28% to a high of 91% between 1950 and 2007, federal tax revenues had indeed constantly remained at about 19.5% of GDP."

---------------------------------------------

I think little "humorous" articles such as these are interesting in that they show that conservatives and liberals are both in agreement that society progresses a certain direction over time. (And that direction is what we call here in the US "the left").

For instance, the number of countries that have sodomy laws have greatly declined since the second half of the 20th century, despite it being law and being advocated by the religious masses since antiquity. This law was basically abolished and became socially outdated fairly recently in the US. This use to be the conservative view. Now, the conservatives have left this idea behind (because at their core I think they understand why being against something as absurd as sodomy laws is the more enlightened position), and have moved on to other things (such as keeping gay marriage illegal). Some day they will lose that battle too and will continue to move on to something else. (If one looks at the 18 - 29 age group, he or she will find that a large majority support gay marriage.)

The battles are hard, but at the end of each fight, the left will always win. The Right just has to move a little to the left each time and find new battles to fight, while the left gets to keep charging ahead. Notice that it is always the Right leaving behind old ideas, not the Left.

This is just the natural flow of political opinion. People become more enlightened and more aware of the political realities that surround us over time in a society where information is free. It's pretty slow moving, since actual political change lags way behind popular opinion. I believe this is due to the fact that the status quo is hard to change even though the majority of the people become aware of the fact that the system is unfair in some way. The rich and powerful that benefit from the status quo (corporations in the US) have many more resources at their disposal (they own the media, own the textbooks, and for the most part own the government here in the US).

I think the U.S. is more conservative than most European countries because of how powerful our corporations are and the extent to which they have been able to indoctrinate a large portion of its citizens. The fact that health insurance companies can propagate the idea that universal healthcare systems are big, bad, and scary and actually have normal people that don't benefit from the system, but that are too stupid to understand they are victims of corporate propaganda to actually believe this BS exemplifies this. (Edit: I realized after reading this that these two paragraphs are just mainly about economic issues, though it can be applied in other ways. For instance, Christians benefit from how things are now because they basically have power over social issues in this country, though that is slipping away. Propaganda in this case says that there is a "war on christianity", as I mentioned above, and many Christians (not all) are stupid enough to believe this. The reality is that the Left believes that no group, Christians or anyone else, should have power over social legislation. They don't even believe that the government should be in the business of legislating morality.)

I believe the Right bascially consists of 1.) those who benefit from the current unfair system we have and 2.) the people that don't benefit from it but have come to believe all the myths that are propagated (thats it's unamerican to care about the sick and poor, that we have a large percentage of people living on handouts here, that our military involvement is always noble around the world, that the government should for some reason cater to Christians because this is a "christian nation" or some BS like that, etc).

The Right have always been and will always be dissatisfied with the direction that this country (along with other free, educated societies) is going. According to them, the country is always being "destroyed." It is always the case that we will be totally doomed within ten years. We've been hearing this for decades.

Keep giving us these ignorant pieces about how liberals are destroying the fabric of America. We'll always be able to look back on them after 10 years and laugh at them for how stupid and misinformed they were.

Fair enough. I'd argue that most "American-style" conservatives today are also believers in the power of the state to institute social change, but I can see the distinction you're making.

I wouldn't disagree. The difference, I guess, is that conservatives today generally want this done at the state level, while Scalia has no issue with the federal government being the agent.

Scalia has no use for "state's rights" when the state doesn't agree with him.
