nickleback would qualify as a big suck but were they ever really overrated? sure, they were/are still? popular, but so is miley cyrus. i dont know of any self respecting music fans ever gave them the time of day. i could be wrong on that front though. i, personally, would have to go with...jesus, i cant even think of just one.:D

DMB is a good contender, but they have ties to an OU prof which gives them a tiny boost. Nope, my vote's gotta go to U2. I downloaded their discography a few months ago, and couldn't make it through after Joshua Tree. Like Coldplay, they're 1-2 good songs per album and a bunch of junk in between.

It's fine and all to have that, but to actually have your songs not suck would be better.

I look on it much as I do authors who write unreadable crap and pass it off as high concept.

Seriously, I could write an impenetrable mess and drop references to Tolstoy, Twain, and Turow and it'd be indistinguishable from your standard screech-fest from Rush.

Crucifax Autumn
8/26/2009, 05:27 PM
At least your retort makes sense...Even if I disagree. But I'm a huge prog-head, so I'm kinda biased. The more crazy time-signatures, changes, and untraditional crap that gets crammed into a song the better for me. That's what makes it listenable and more importantly, re-listenable. I DO realize that the vast majority of people find prog unlistenable for those same reasons though and it keeps me from getting sick of the bands since I don't hear them every 10 minutes on the radio like Nickelback or any of that shat.

3)famous more for humanitarian issues than for music

this may be unpopular but.....i like the Ramones, they are great. however i think they are a little overrated.

for instance Spin (the worst mag ever) ranks the Ramones as the #2 rock band of all-time. no way.

the uptempo doo-wop tunes with distortion and eventually formulaic melodies over a career do not equal #2 or even close. i give them their cred, but #2? too many post-baby boomer industry execs growing up on Long Island and in NY....who liked to have thought they were "punkers" inna day and emerge as industry opinion leaders, sounds like to me.

the Ramones make it in 1976....the Stooges were already long gone (when "The Stooges" comes out in 1969/70, the Beatles are still together)....and the MC5 are done too. so, the cherished and oft-repeated claim that the R's "started" punk rock is bit of a stretch. not to mention Brixton and the UK bands.

My Opinion Matters

My thoughts exactly.

I put Aerosmith because to me "overrated" must imply that the band is highly rated. I dont think DMB or Creed, or Nickelback meets this criteria.

And I used to love Aerosmith, but when I look back at everything from Pump to today, it's awful.

They are regarded as a supergroup, but when I look at their discography, it's a big pile of meh. Everything since 1980 has been soundtrack fodder.

Ergo, vis a vis, Overrated.

AC/DC. A very confusing band to me. A British rock group with an almost exclusively redneck fanbase.

Rednecks love them because AC/DC isn't much of a stretch from country. In mid-80s rural American locker rooms, half your teenage fanbase listened to country, and the other half listened to metal. AC/DC could appeal to both. They're the original "crossover" band.

yermom
8/27/2009, 03:50 PM

King Crimson
8/27/2009, 03:56 PM
what is this about AC/DC's "one song"?

all the stuff with Bon Scott (Highway, Powerage, TNT, High Voltage): great stuff, Back in Black and i'll give you For Those About to Rock....but, after that they sort of peter out IMO. wander into formula-ville, soundtrack-fodder-ville, and later try and write a single-they-will-play-in-arenas-ville

but, there's lots of good tunes (and i'm not counting Thunderstruck) on those 70's LP's. all of Highway, especially.

yermom
8/27/2009, 04:07 PM
i'm mostly just talking about of my as5 ;)

their Back in Black and later stuff that all kinda sounds alike, at least the stuff on the radio. like the last song i heard of theirs sounds like it could have been on an album 20 years ago :)

it's not like i change the station (i'm looking at you DMB) but i've never really gotten that excited about their stuff

While I agree that some of DMBs mainstream stuff is sucky, how you could listen to Before These Crowded Streets or Crash (minus one or two radio hits) and not think they're good is beyond me.

Walsh's There Goes the Neighborhood has a great LP cover.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_NldQwDmK_vc/R0LbDxliNbI/AAAAAAAACYk/NxdWZayFaLc/s320/1981+-+There+Goes+the+Neighborhood.jpg

However, Walsh gets a wtf? for Space Age Whiz Kids.

Eagles should pay royalties to the Gram Parsons estate. they are a kind of luke-warm Byrds Sweetheart of the Rodeo or Flying Burrito Brothers until they started doing a lot of blow then they became more LA than Bakersfield.

I'd say the Beach Boys. So the Beatles bought a copy of Pet Sounds and listened to it and the album becomes critically acclaimed. they're very nice fluff, not much more.

Next: Van Halen. they're kinda like a skilled version of grand funk railroad. really nothing memorable. no quality song-writing. they rode the coattails of early MTV.

I've heard the same thing from a few people but what you hear from the mainstream is Kurt Cobain, Kurt Cobain, Kurt Cobain. I've even heard that Dave Grohl had some songs he wanted to do but Kurt Cobain was such an egomaniac that he wouldn't allow it.

Rush is far from overrated culturally, it is a niche band that is enjoying some recent pub but the core fans have been and always will be with them. I'm one of them.

Just about every other post in this thread I agree with.
