Moby Grape.

Late 60s band. 12-15 years before their time.

Huey Lewis and the News still has the distinction of doing the most awesome rendition of the Star Spangled Banner I have ever heard. It has been several years, but I think it was at the finals of the NCAA tourney.

Ahh, true, but at least I've gotten laid at least once in the last five years.

So that makes me more special.

Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humour.

For listenable pop, Huey Lewis was/is pretty good. But it ain't really R&R.

For my money, the most underrated band of all time is the Dixie Dregs.

Sooner04
8/24/2009, 09:55 AM
And the most underrated band of all-time is the Beatles.

I don't think you can sell that many records and sit in a corner and call yourself underrated. They were a pretty tight band that had catchy tunes and they released their very safe pop album at the perfect time.

I think of them as a wine cooler. Everyone enjoyed one at one time or another back in 84. And a lot of people won't admit it.

The Pixies and The Clash

Not underrated in their own circles, but the average joe likely doesn't connect their influences to what he listens to and likes.

saw huey and the news when i was 16 (FORE). had great "seats". probably didn't appreciate then as much as i would now. great big band sound to them in concert.

never thought dire straits got enough credit for anything other than money for nothin' - and the song sucks, imo. everything else... fantastic.

I remember watching this one interview with Huey Lewis where he was complaining about how tight security was around him at concerts and how it kept him away from fans. He said it didn't matter because he'd go down to the hotel bar at whatever city he was playing at where his fans would be and party with them all night. I thought that was awesome -- you're at the local Hilton bar and f-ing Huey Lewis comes down to drink with you. Pure greatness.

Billy Squier ruined his career when he danced in his video.

Rolling Stone did a story a few years ago about a book written by former rock groupies. They had a top 10 of biggest ummmm male rocker ummm phallic type things and Huey was unrivaled..

So he's got that goin for him.

In '87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.

Maybe not the most underrated bands, but bands that I think ae underrated:

Our Lady Peace - great music, and a helluva live show
Sister Hazel - even though they are from Gainesville
Cowboy Mouth - lead singer gets on my nerves, but again, great live show and not may bands have their lead singer playing drums...
