What am I missing?

The stock market is the prime indicator of a capitalist system.

All of you naysayers feel free to chime in on how markets are getting this socialist thing so wrong, please and thanks.

I have thought about bumping Tuba's dreck about the markets and Obama but then that would mean seeking out silliness.

Dude, I like you but I'm fairly sure none of his socialist policies have kicked in yet.
But what do I know, socialism is a proven winner.

Now, I shouldn't have to tell you this, because you know alot more about this stuff than I do. But it seems to me, when companies lay-off workers, profits increase. Which raises stock values. Right?

Has the Fed been given more power yet? Has DC taken over our health care system? Oh just wait, talk about a jammin economy.

The economy liked Bushie too when oil was high and people were buying houses they couldn't afford.

I'm waiting on the consumer credit market to crash. When people's plastic stops working, life in this country as we know it will cease to exist. And it ain't "if," it's "when." That's why I been stocking up on ammo.

Your contention that the stock market is "the prime indicator" of a capitalist system is wrong. It is one of a handful of prime indicators, but it's not *the* prime indicator. It needs to be examined in context with aggregate demand, the M2 money supply, and several other factors the Scotch is making me forget.

neville chamberlain and socialism in the same thread? really going for the heavy artillery.

at least be accurate and say "welfare state"....all this socialism/Marxism hullabaloo will be accurate when private property is abolished and isn't simple scare tactics.

These things take time. The whole abolishment of private property can't possibly occur before the second term. ;)

Of course, the "death panels" that will pull the plug on anyone with a serious illness above the age of 62 as proposed by the administration is kinda worse.;)

I know you're kidding, but since you mentioned it...I've read through the relevant pages (425 - 435 or so)...don't see WTF people are getting "death panels."

Methinks the notion stems from the fact providers will be reimbursed indexed to their "community rating" which is at least partially dependent on their patients' compliance with their "advance directives."

Thanks everyone for all of your comments. Spek.

I find that I am spending more and more of my time trying to keep up with the increasingly weird and wacky logic that drives global fund flows and global capital markets. Markets are not so efficient and sentiment, as is increasingly obvious, turns on a dime. It is also interesting that markets are not playing into all of the fear factors that many are talking about concerning President Obama’s proposals for deficit spending, health care reform and stimulus measures. So, what does this all mean?

• Wall Street is obviously not Main Street, but Wall Street can’t ignore Main Street for very long. Cost-cutting can only do so much if revenues aren’t growing and share prices have to eventually reflect that reality.

• Markets tend to look at least six months ahead and that is the logic battle going on now – whether we will see a “V”, “W” or “square root” shaped economic recovery.

• Wall Street still can’t be discounted as an important part of our capitalist system. Actually, it is a very huge and influential part. Are foreigners buying our debt, or not? Since so much of our individual savings are now tied up in the stock market, we have to think in terms of either wealth creation or wealth destruction and that has to play a factor into consumer spending patterns.

• The global system is still awash with funds. There are huge petro dollars and China dollars, thanks to US consumers, chasing after the best returns. They can’t upset the cart that they have ridden so far.

• It is really weird that higher energy prices are being interpreted as good for equity markets as an indication of economic strength, when higher oil prices should be negative for the average US consumer.

• President Obama should be at least credited with restoring confidence to the global financial system and global trade financing that has allowed global trade to resume.

• President Obama’s proposals for health care reform effectively brings into focus US competitive advantages or disadvantages in a global market.

• Essentially the market hates change and higher risk profile. Americans hate change too. It is a weird and strange world we live in. If you want to say that our world was good as it used to be, I’d agree with you but that probably isn’t helpful.
