If you could "draft" one player from the NFL to come and play the 2009 season for Oklahoma, who would it be, and why?

Despite wanting to go with Adrian Peterson, or Larry Fitzgerald, my pick would be someone like Pro Bowl Center Andre Gurode of the Cowboys. I think that experience would answer questions about our line and be a key piece. Or maybe Steve Hutchinson and put Trent Williams at Left Tackle and lock down the left side of the line.

Thoughts?

Thanks. Yeah, I'm torn. I suppose you could argue our offense is going to be good enough anyway, even with questions about the line. Could you imagine the sheer havoc Ray Lewis would cause running down Colt McCoy? Tebow in the Rose Bowl!!? :)

Fitzgerald

+1 on Fitzgerald - that just wouldn't be fair

Another consideration might be a Champ Bailey type corner. I mean Bailey in his prime (I don't watch much NFL, so I don't know if he is as good as he was 3 years ago)

I would probably pick the best safety...

It's a big assumption, but let's assume we're just good enough as is to get to the BCS championship again. What player would we need to really make a difference in that game? If Florida makes it back, Ray Lewis just might be the answer.

Great thread. However Gurode is a horrible choice. If you watched a Cowboy game in the last two years you will undoubtedly note the numerous times he launches a shotgun snap into the stratosphere.

Given our proclivity for running the shotgun, I'm afraid this would be a marriage made in hell.

Besides, as a lifelong Cowboys fan, trust me, Gurode is vastly overrated.

And I think I go with Polamalu.

With our DL and him roaming the background, I just don't see anyone scoring on us. Shaky OL or not, with that D I can't imagine we would have to score more than 21 a game to win out.

I will admit that I only picked him because I thought we could use a dominating center, and I can't think of the names of any NFL centers off the top of my head...so I went and looked at the '09 Pro Bowl Roster. The reasoning was solid, if not the research!

I suppose it would be a lot of fun to have AD back - although he wouldn't be my choice. I'm going to go with Ray Lewis.

With all due respect... I don't get why people think Gurode is anything special. He snaps the ball way over Romo's head all the time and he's comparable at best to every other center in the league as far as blocking goes. Is he just super strong or something? But bringing in a center isn't a bad choice. How about we just bring back Jon Cooper? I mean, he knows the offense and all. ;)

Bring back Bubba Burcham! Maybe I just liked him because he wore my number 59 in 2000.

and i'm thinking Polamalu too, or maybe just a pass rush specialist. names are escaping me...

although, Kaeding, Vinateri or Crosby might be enough

but i've got high hopes for Stevens. hopefully the Lou Groza people know something

CaliBornSoonerBred

I'd have to go with Polamalu as well. Too much of a game changer.

But a thought since we're on the subject, how fun would it be to see the option run 10-15 plays a game with Mike Vick in his prime with Demarco and our stable of backs? It'd be a threat every D coordinator would spend many sleepless nights thinking about

Real old old school. Fair Hooker. Not that he's that great of a player I'd just like to hear Bob Berry stumble over that name.
Don Merdith however, did a pretty good job of commenting on Fair Hooker, his reply--never met one.

We really could use some kicking help, so how bout that really old guy from NYG at punting and that kicker that played for both the Pats and the Colts with all the Super Bowl rings to do field goals and PATs?

After that, I think we need some O-Linemen with experience... but for now, I think a good punter and FG kicker could go a long way for OU... and I know I just missed the entire point of this thread :D

NormanPride
8/19/2009, 01:26 PM
How can you not pick AD? We wouldn't have to drive him into the ground, and he's a better blocker now so we can leave him in for passing situations.

JLEW1818
8/19/2009, 01:27 PM
I think Brown and Murray are good enough, Ray Lewis or Larry F, would put us over the top, or Troy P

RedstickSooner

TRRW

Yup.

The rest of you are over-thinking. I don't care how good a player is, judged by NFL standards. Roy in college was the hardest hitting Safety in all the land, covered *everybody*, practically never missed a tackle, and had pure flexibility. Big enough to cover a tight end across the middle, fast enough to stay with a wideout.

He was like a magic do-anything button on defense. I can't think of a player that'd be more useful to us.

Yes, OL is our obvious weakness going in purely due to the experience issue, but I think we'd have to draft multiple for it to make a huge impact to the team -- whereas Roy, by himself, would be a game-changer.

JLEW1818
8/19/2009, 01:34 PM
Ray or Troy still, just from what they have done in the NFL, on d

Nine games into this nightmare of a season, I have to recast my vote.

Adam Vinatieri, no question about it.

We would be 9-0. Imagine that.

misplacedsooner
11/9/2009, 10:51 AM
alot of positions could be filled but i have to agree that a great kicker would look nice. on the other hand a great kicker may make us undefeated but we would still have the problems we have with the o-line. losing jermaine hurt us bad even with sam in there...he was a beast that could do many things. our d is pretty good, its not like we are giving up big points against anyone. one o-lineman isnt gonna stop all the holding and false starts that put us in a hole. so realistically it would have to be a cool qb that can take pressure and make plays under pressure....provided someone other than ryan catches the ball consistantly....man, losing jermaine hurts.

TMcGee86
11/9/2009, 11:35 AM
I change mine to Peyton Manning.

Or a kicker. any of them.

rainiersooner
11/9/2009, 02:58 PM
I change mine to Peyton Manning.

Since I do think that we'd be undefeated with Sam at QB, I suppose I should prefer a Peyton Manning. But, I still wonder - with our receivers tendency to drop balls - whether Sam or Peyton Manning would make a difference. I guess I have to believe they would - but it is conjecture. On the other hand, I have reliable evidence that in each of the games we've lost, making one of the field goals we missed would have won the game for us.

So, I'm sticking with Vinitieri, or, frankly, any NFL caliber kicker. Oy vey.
