Big Duke Robinson vs. Rhett Bomar and.......Allen Patrick?

I guessed I missed the memo that Allen Patrick is now on the Giants' Roster. Good for him. I hope he stays there. He is a decent backup RB, but he has real value on special teams. Should be another interesting Preseason game watching former Sooners.

ALBANY - An injury to Adrian Peterson gave Allen Patrick his shot at running back at Oklahoma. His chances of making the Giants got a boost late Friday when fourth-rounder Andre Brown was lost for the season with a ruptured left Achilles' tendon.

Until the freakish injury, Patrick looked like one of the odd men out in a backfield led by Brandon Jacobs. Ahmad Bradshaw moved into the No. 2 spot with the loss of Derrick Ward to free agency, and Danny Ware seems entrenched as the No. 3 back.

Brown was almost certain to be the fourth man in the backfield, simply because of his draft status. Now that spot is open, and Patrick, who might be the fastest back on the team, seems to be the front-runner to get the job.

"I feel it is opportunity knocking," Patrick said yesterday, a little more than 12 hours after Brown was hurt running a pass pattern. "It helped me better my chances. At the same time, that is one of my teammates we lost the other day."

Patrick spoke with Brown yesterday and told his fellow back, who is scheduled to have surgery Tuesday, to hang in there and work hard to get back next season.

"It's happened to me before," said Patrick, who has had some leg injuries himself. "I know the feeling he is having."

Patrick has had an interesting career. He played safety for Independence Community College in Kansas before transferring to Oklahoma in 2005, where he was switched to running back early in the season. The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder gained 136 yards on 25 carries that first season and got his big chance the following year when Peterson broke his collarbone. Patrick started five games and finished the season with 761 yards and four touchdowns.

He was drafted by Baltimore in the seventh round in 2008 but was cut in late August. He was signed by Cleveland on Dec. 11 but never played in a game. The Giants signed him as a free agent in May, less than a month after taking Brown in the draft.

Hopefully AP will make the team. At least I have a reason to watch tonight.

Was the crowd booing because they gave up a TD to force OT, or because a preseason game is actually going to OT? That one guy in the stands looked like he was falling asleep watching the scrubs.

if that was a regular season game that would be remembered as one of the best finishes of the season....but no one will remember it by the middle of September

Ok, I wasn't watching. What happened?

sooner59
8/17/2009, 10:18 PM
Cantwell had his arm hit with 10 seconds left and the ball just floated up and a DE or LB grabbed it out of the air and ran it back for the TD with no time left. Only thing is that this would never happen in the regular season. With only 10 seconds left backed up that far in your own territory, every coach would take a knee in that situation. But in the preseason, they just want to see what their guys can do. Carolina's Coach Fox was just smiling after it was over. He knew that it wasn't a big deal.

I don't think coaches want pre-season games to go to OT. Denver went for 2 the other night to avoid OT. Didn't make the points, but it did avoid OT.
