The thing I like about researching a list like this is the memories that come back as I read the names of players I have not thought of in years.Among those thoughts and players;

Tony DiRienzo-guy had a heck of a leg .I think he still holds the record for longest FG(58 yds?)

Jeff Resler - lost one of his hands at birth.I tried tying my shoes one-handed to get a feel for his situation,I couldn't do it.

Keith Stanberry, great DB crppled in car accident, had game saving endzone interception disallowed vs. UT.

Kent Bradford didn't makea mark as a player but made ahuge contribution to OU in later years.

Weldon Ledbetter was recruited in the same class as Jerome Ledbetter'the story was they were not related but found out they actually were during a family picnic.

John Goodman solid DT who later played in the NFL before going on to fame on ROSEANNE. :)

Brad Davis was a non-factor on the o-line until his senior year then became the leader of the o-line.

Bubba Burcham former walk-on anchored NC o-line in 2000.

Jeff Ferguson -heady play on a bad snap in the 2000 NC game kept momentum going OU's way.

Is it football season yet?

My mom's boss, and one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. And he had a pretty awesome blocked punt against Miami in '75.

You left off a pretty impressive #77. When we played @ Miami in 1975, (they stunk back then) as the equipment managers unpacked they realized that LeeRoy Selmon's jersey was among the missing. They put him in a 77 jersey.

During pre-game warmups, the coaches from both teams were standing around the mid-field. Couple of the Miami coaches walked over and asked the OU coaches which one was LeeRoy. Switzer immediately said, "You didn't hear? LeeRoy has mono. We had to leave him at home".

As both teams left the field at half time, one of the Miami coaches came up to Barry and said, "You are a lying MOFO"!

I think 00 or maybe just plain 0 would be a neat football jersey #... wonder why that has never caught on?

Thanks for the list... brought back a lot of memories. A couple of my favorite DEs from the late 70's didn't make the list: Bruce Taton #5; Reggie Mathis #58...

Never heard that story before, pretty cool .I can't believe I left Holiway off my list but I kept the list at THREE per number because it was starting to get away from me. Please EVERYONE feel free to add to the list.

OMG I also left off Jim Weatherall,OU's first Outland winner at #71

#11 is pretty good! The Godfather of the Wishbone. RIP Mr. Mildren!...I wonder what Tinker would have been like in today's offenses. My Dad grew up with the Owens boys... Teddy has always been one of my faves. With Tom Wort, I think we have a new Teddy!

That is one of my all-time favorite defensive plays.I forget wether it was 3rd and short or 4th and short but Hill blows up the blocker AND Dorsett for NO GAIN,maybe even a loss.

Have any of the numbers been retired? No.OU football has not retired any numbers.OU basketball has retired (3) Alvan Adams,Waymon Tisdale,Mookie Blaylock.

mOUse I started list by naming all players I could think of at the different numbers and then suplemented through research.I admit in post#10 that I blew it by not listing Holiway.Blevins made it because I remeber him because of the many times he came off the bench to help lead SOONER MAGIC comeback wins.I left many other deserving players off too but that happens when you put together a list this extensive. As I said before I kept the list down to three players per number to keep it staight.

No.OU football has not retired any numbers.OU basketball has retired (3) Alvan Adams,Waymon Tisdale,Mookie Blaylock. They didn't really retire the numbers just the jersey. Stacey King also has 33 retired.

the smile next to the John Goodman line means that it's a joke - right.
The actor is a lot older than the OU football player that I'm thinking of.

My vote is for 11. You have arguably the best QB in school history, all american wr, all american lb,

20 has a case with Billy Sims and Rocky Calmus, you could argue that those are the 2 best at their positions at OU. Rocky isn't the best lb ever at OU but he's up there.

1, 33, and 38 are all real solid cases as well.

22 - 4 - 20 and 30

I like the additions to 16 and 19.

wouldn't think these 6 would make good Lotto picks.

Jerry Anderson

Randy Hughes

Tim LasharMy memory and research show Jerry Anderson from Murfeesboro,Tennessee wore #17.Anderson for those who aren't
aware of it is a true Sooner hero.He saved some kids from drowning in a flloded Tulsa area creek ,I think it was Memorial weekend.A year or two later Jerry was back home in Murfeesboro (Ironically Memorial Day weekend) and tried to rescue a couple of drowning kids, this time it cost him his life. His off-field heroics IMHO overshadow my recollections of his playing career and keep him always in my memory.

ndpruitt03 IT is actually the NUMBER.If you recall Blake asked Waymon for permission to wear #23.As for Adams'#33 It was not retired until long after not only Adams had left OU but King as well. The only way #10.#23,#33 will EVER be worn again is if a player asks permission.Since WT has passed I would assume #23 is now PERMANANTLY retired,if not it should be.

You are correct, stoopified! I've got a painting in my back room with the great players from the 70s and I mixed up Jerry Anderson (17) with Tony Peters (16).

Tony Peters would be a fine addition at 16. As would Darrell Songy.

And you're totally right about Jerry Anderson being a hero. Saved the kids but drowned himself. I don't think he even knew how to swim. :(
