I'm sure it's a fantastic golf course, but i've never had any real strong feeling for Hazeltine.

Kim getting a lot of TV time but +1. the pga.com announcer just opined that choking down on the club gives you less distance. that's analysis.

So, is this thing over? What say you? 100% over. 90% over. 50% over. Not over at all. What?

i'd wait to call it "over". the announcers are working up a story-line that involves wind this afternoon when Tiger plays....30-40 mph. but, if he throws out another 67-69 way things are going now....he may go wire to wire.

but, he's not been bullet-proof for a while. if it's as windy as they say (flags are moving), he'll probably play super-controlled course management and try to come in at -1/E and let the other guys try and catch him/make mistakes. he hits those knock-down/stinger type shots as good as anyone and with more "variety".

I'm the same way. I'm just kinda "bleh" with Hazeltine. I can't believe they're going to play a Ryder Cup there.

It's a shame what distance has done to the 16th hole. That thing used to eat guys for lunch and now they're hitting three wood/wedge into it. Scott Simpson butchered that hole in '91 and gave Payne Stewart his first US Open.

the Ryder Cup sites are often underwhelming, especially the Euru sights. K Club and Valderrama are nods/payoffs to the golf resort tourism industries of Ireland and Spain, supposedly. usually, we do a much better job of having a "prestige" site.

it's criminal to play the thing at K Club when they could play County Down, Portmarnock, or Ballybunion if they are going to play in Ireland. of course, it's even more criminal that politics and old boy Tories that run the R&A keep an Open Championship from one of the Ireland links.

Man, no kidding. Although I was impressed with Valderrama. That's a wild course. The K Club was barftastic. That 2010 course in Wales will probably suck too. The PGA has to go to these wide open, bomber's paradise courses for us to have a chance. They went to a real course in 2004, Oakland Hills, and we got our teeth kicked in.

I think they played Portrush once in the Open. Back in the 50s. Everything else has been on the island of Great Britain, which is a little sad. But, then again, it is the BRITISH Open, not the U.K. Open.

King Crimson
8/14/2009, 12:07 PM
playing at K Club instead of Ballybunion is like playing the PGA at Shangri-La instead of Southern Hills.

i overstate, some, for effect.

the Senior British was at Portrush or County Down a couple years ago, FWIW. that was really cool to see the course on TV, IMO.

Then you're probably right. It's all political haggling behind the scenes. I'd love to see County Down or Ballybunion. That'd be sweeter than sweet.

Nicklaus always said the Open rota got worse as you went south.

I'm anxious to see where the cut goes today. Tim Clark is -4 for the day to get back to E for the championship. You know there are going to be some balloons in the afternoon because nobody other than Clark is going low in the morning. Lot of guys sitting at +1 and +2 who've yet to tee off. They'll be knee-knocking all day.

Were you there to witness Lowery's albatross? He almost caught Beem. Had a putt on 18 to win it but missed and lost by a point.

That Stableford system was nuts, but it made the International a ton of fun.

King Crimson
8/14/2009, 01:00 PM
i didn't see Lowery. i had mixed feeling about the International. i was not a big fan of the Stableford. AND, it didn't make any sense from a player's perspective to want to play it (or the International). it used to be the week before the PGA, the last major of the year. top players are looking to cap off the season with a major...so, why go play at altitude with a "go for broke" scoring system when the next week you are gonna be grinding it out possibly in a hotter, humid, sea-level place like Minnesota or Tulsa looking to win at about -10 or so where you need to play the course management game and not swing for the fences on all the par 5's. it didn't make sense.

it was fun to go. Castle Pines was a bitch to walk and the last few years with the smaller camera technology they were able to do a better job of making the course look on TV like to does from the ground. as you know, it's one the classic Nicklaus designs from his early stuff.

i'd love to see another event in the area....there a couple newish courses that are serious enough tracks that could host....but i think the money people of the Int. felt burned by the date on the schedule (shorthand: Tiger is never coming)...though, they usually had Phil (who won it early in his career and would still come) and Els has some connection to the event.

King Crimson

It's because there's a conspiracy to make sure tigger wins.

naw, i just thought it was an interesting draw given the possibilities....and i must have misread the yahoo thing before i posted because it's Tiger and Vijay. if Vijay could make a putt, he'd make 7-8 birdies every round. gawd, he knocks it close *a lot*.

and anyway, if it had been Fisher and Tig that makes Fisher the guy who wilts under the Eldrick heat and throws up all over himself for 75 and you don't see him again until Sunday he makes a couple birdies down the stretch to shoot 69 and T11th...and left with the "just that one round i capitulated" feeling as he puts the clubs in the trunk.

that scenario leaves Vijay and Padraig on their own to shoot 67 or 73.

Today's round was a clinic by Tiger. Middle of every green, two putts, let somebody try to make a run. Lots of people did but nobody could really sustain it. His four shot lead is trimmed to two, but there are only 18 holes left. I'm still stunned he missed the putt on 18.

I really thought we'd have an Ernie/Tiger final pairing, but Els remembered who he's become over the last five years and finishes bogey-bogey-bogey. Ugh.

name wise, sure. but, like i posted earlier in the thread...the guy did win on Tour this year, has won almost 2,000,000$ this year and is 21st in Fed Ex points.

as far as down the stretch, head to head, it's big but not "ever" big IMO.

The Tiger who was 14/14 entering the last round is not the one we've seen post-surgery.

if the winner was an American with the same track record this year as Yang, i doubt they'd summon up the "ever" card.

The guys who have truly foiled Tiger are not the phenoms. They're the self-taught, out of nowhere guys with the homemade swings. Not these dime a dozen jabronis with perfect swings who really don't know how to play golf.

Yang today showed why distance isn't all it's cracked up to be. Tiger's poking it out there 20 yards by him on every hole BUT Yang gets to hit first. He's putting it 20 feet from the pin all day and never allowing Tiger to breathe. Tiger always had to respond because Yang never jerked one into the junk. He just played rock solid golf from tee to green and never allowed Tiger to breathe.

Sure, if Tiger makes some putts it's a different story, but it's not like Yang was pouring it in from everywhere. He was just solid. Rock solid.....on a very tough golf course.

Tiger's always been overrated on his Sunday play. He wins his majors on Friday and Saturday. He lets the other guy crater while he just kills them with pars. That's why he was always such a monster at match play. But Yang never blinked, and by the time Tiger realized this dude was for real it was too late because they were on 14 and he went from tied to down two in a nanosecond.

That was a blast to watch.

I will say this, I "thought" Yang might be able to do it when he eagled 14, but that was a fleeting "thought" because I thought the Tiger we all know woke up by pouring in that birdie putt right on top of him. I figured it was game on right there. But it wasn't.

I don't think Yang hits that beautiful hybrid on 18 without hitting the terrible first putt on 17. I think that first putt pissed him off and when he missed the 6-footer that followed it REALLY hacked him off. He knew he'd let Tiger off the deck and he chose to be the aggressor with his approach to 18. That shot was an all-timer. Smoked a high draw up into the breeze and let it be carried back to the stick.

Ball game. Thanks for playing. Don't forget to tip your waitress.

When you consider the lack of great golfers it will be a stunner if he doesn't have the most majors by 40. I would love to see all these guys using the same equipment that Palmer, Nickalaus, Player and Watson played in the 60's and 70's.

No.

What I'm saying is that these guys have these picture-perfect swings that are completely textbook but they don't know how to play golf. Tiger knows how to play golf. He can be fighting his swing and still shoot around par, maybe even a little under.

Adam Scott's got the most gorgeous swing you've ever seen and if one little thing is off he'll go 82-79.

The shotmakers (Hogan, Trevino, Nicklaus), those guys knew how to get around a golf course. Tiger's like them. He can be off and still in contention. This is why Sergio has never won a major. This is why every young gun becomes an old gun without ever winning anything. They don't know how to play golf.

My man King Crimson knows what I'm talking about here. It's the ability to make something out of nothing. To shoot 71 when you're hitting it like 81.

More consistanly then anyone else out of this current bunch of players. One of the reasons you don't see great golfer is because they don't need to be.

Right now you have 65 player that have won over $1,000,000 and most have not come close to winning a tournament let alone a major. Money drives these guys and titles drive Tiger. Tiger could not make another dime the rest of his life and the childrens, childrens, childrens, children couldn't spend all the money. Tiger has one goal and that's his motivation.

Yes, with close to six million hits on Google he’s bigger than Richard Gere, more popular even than the Dalai Lama. Maybe even God. But then one prophet did foretell, “Tiger will do more than any other man in history to change the course of humanity … He is the Chosen One.” (That was Earl, Tiger’s dad). And another seer spake thus: “He can hold everyone together. He is the Universal Child.” (Yes, that was Koltida, his mom).

And in case you think that quasi-religious adoration of Tiger is limited to his doting parents, here’s Michael Jordan’s take: “I really do believe he was put here for a bigger reason than just to play golf. I don’t think that he is a god, but I do believe that he was sent by one.”

Despite these accolades, we’re not entirely sure whether to regard Tiger as a Buddhist. He’s said, “I believe in Buddhism … not every aspect, but most of it. So I take bits and pieces,” which could make him sounds like a dilettante, but then even the Dalai Lama has expressed similar sentiments so we’re giving Tiger the benefit of the doubt.

Woods has also said, “I don’t practice Buddhism on a day-to-day basis, just when I feel like it.” So on the bad side he’s not a consistent practitioner, while on the good side he does practice. Again, that counts him in. That practice and background (mom Koltida is a Thai Buddhist) have helped Tiger become the almost inscrutably equanimous player he’s become: “Buddhism has been a major role in my life. It has given me an inner peace and calmness that I think I wouldn’t have achieved at such an early age.”

In 1996 Tiger and his father launched the Tiger Woods Foundation, which through personal enrichment programs, scholarships, direct grants, junior golf teams and the new Tiger Woods Learning Center, is helping millions of children reach their dreams. Tiger takes his status as a youth role model seriously: “I am not trying to preach to them that this is ‘a sport for you.’ I’m saying, ‘This is an opportunity for you to grow as a person.’ I think that is what really matters.”

So there we have it. Tiger Woods — Guru of Golf, Zen master of the fairway, first prophet of putting, dare we say even “demigod of the green” — is the world’s most famous celebrity Buddhist. More power to your putting, Tiger — and to your practice.
