View Full Version : Poll about athletes posing in gay mags

Should a country's Olympic committee ban an athlete from appearing in a gay magazine?

Don't ask and don't tell and definitely do not appear in a gay magazine.

What do you think?

This is a public poll. And, I hope someone comments.

Chuck Bao

This poll is being asked in a very general sense, but this case is what started the idea of the poll.

Worapoj Petchkoom, Thailand's boxing silver medalist in the 2004 Olympics, may be banned from competing in the 2012 Olympics after posing in his underwear for a gay magazine. A panel of the Amateur Boxing Association of Thailand will decide his fate and reprimand him for ‘embarrassing’ the association.

Worapoj says that he is not gay and he has a girlfriend. He wasn't aware that the magazine had predominately gay readership until the photo shoot team told him to strip off to his underwear, which he did because the shoot team said that it would "showcase" his abs and he stood to forfeit his $440 fee.

He claims that he doesn't need the money and that he still has both the pick-up truck and motorcycle given to him after winning the Olympic silver medal in 2004. Also in his favor is the fact that boxers typically weigh in in their underwear. The mainstream press will print large photos of men in their underwear on front page of the sports section.

Now, I'm guessing here: he really is't gay. That is not to say that there are no gay or bi-sexual boxers. I suspect, in this case, his girlfriend is in on promoting the boxer dude, even if it is a gay magazine. Come on...a very attractive Thai woman...an aging boxer...money. In case it goes wrong...a chance in the spotlight...possibly a movie deal...an aging boxer...

I don't think this issue is being picked up besides initial news stories in the gay and Western internet press. Mainstream Asian press hasn't and won't because they would loathe to mention homosexuality and certainly not a renegade gay magazine gaining advertising dollars.

Thailand is one of the more progressive countries in the region. And, I wouldn't know what the US Olympic committee would do.

So, what do you think?

Should a country's Olympic committee ban an athlete from appearing in a gay magazine in his/her underwear?

I voted let them compete. My question is why not turn pro, where you can get paid a little more money, and you can do pretty much whatever you want without being banned short of actual being incarcerated at the time the bout is scheduled. At least for boxers anyway.

this really a problem in Thailand?

Chuck Bao

Sad isn't it, for one of the more progressive countries?

Boxers may be gay, but boxing fans tend not.

But if more boxers show up in gay magazines, who knows?

I have no idea why there are two threads. Mr. OU Alumni 1990, if you'd like to post in this thread, I'd delete the other.

For everyone else, I'll post the pics of the boxer if it'd help you make your decision. Is this bannable or not? Worth a gamble on the Olympics?

I think they are safe for work, mainly. If anyone asks, this is just a boxing thread.

It may not be a fresh US issue. But, it isn't a bad topic point. Several US Olympians have come out after the Olympics. None, that I know of, have come out publicly before. Okay, we all know about the ice dancers. But is that advertising dollars or USOC? Advertising dollars will change depending on the people of middle America, like you good folk. Hence, the question.

Oh yeah, this doesn't belong here. I should have posted something about the communists.

For the record, I didn’t post the pics to titillate. I thought the main point was that they are pretty tame compared to US underwear/swimming trunks ads. Okay, I also posted it because I don’t doubt that some of you would have imagined far worse…Olympic-sized worsts.

Second, the pics are not hotlinked or tagged (I don’t think).

And, now I regret it. Do you want me to delete them?

As a point of comparison, David Beckham's modeled for gay magazines in the UK.

And considering Victoria Beckham was hot back in the day and may still be considered hot today, he certainly isn't anywhere near gay.

Well, i don't think its any more banable than a Baptist posing for a Muslim magazine. I don't care one way or the other.

My question is, was there any language written in the with Olympic rules about posing in any magazine, ie Playboy?

if there was, than ban him. If not leave him alone.

If so, then: No.

Are they just doing an interview and posing for free to tell a little (no pun intended) about themselves?

I think it is kind of a joke to ban him. Yes it might be a gay magazine but he is not nude (I don't think). There was a womens Olympic team during the China games that posed in Playboy without repercussions.

I get confused about which Olympic sports are still amateur and which have already gone pro.

Apparently, Olympic boxing is still amateur and what LAS posted is probably correct. Receiving money is a banable offense.

As I posted in the second post of this thread, Worapoj readily admits to receiving 15,000 baht or the equivalent of about $440 for the photos. Such a pittance for throwing away another shot at Olympic glory!

It’s odd that he didn’t think receiving money for the photos was the issue. It was more about posing for a gay magazine and embarrassing the Amateur Boxing Association of Thailand. You gotta know that those old dudes controlling the sport in Thailand have a very big chip on their shoulder. Gay Thai boxers and straight Thai boxers posing in gay magazines must be pretty much anathema to what they are all about.

But what if there is a gay Thai boxer that proves he’s amongst the best in the world in his weight division? Would those voting no on the gay magazine issue be willing to call him a pansy, a light-weight, a ***** to his face?

I wish there was an "I don't care" option in the poll, but since there isn't, I won't vote because I couldn't care less.

I will say though, that I remember boycott of an automaker being called when they pulled their advertising for a gay magazine a few years ago. The boycott was called for censorship and bigotry and such. The automaker tried to say it was a cost-cutting move, but fearing bad publicity decided to start advertising in the publication again.

The point being that with anything that draws controversy, enter and leave at your own risk. If the athlete's content collecting paychecks for being a talented athlete, stick with SI and ESPN.

One more post and I'm out.

Remember when Chuck Norris appeared on ESPN College Gameday wearing a Texas Longhorns hat? I think I heard (and I definitely read) the collective Sooner Nation's hearts breaking and eyes glaring as Walker Texas Ranger himself said that he was always a Longhorn fan and had Longhorns on his ranch.

As it turns out, he was just saying that because otherwise he couldn't appear on College Gameday in Austin and couldn't promote whatever it was he was trying to promote.

Unfortunately, the damage had been done - the Oklahoma native appeared in Longhorn garb for all of Sooner Nation to see and suddenly, the Chuck Norris jokes were turning sour.

Once again, I don't care, but the athletes should.

Badger, I love ya like a sister, but honey child, ya got lost on the main sport.

Boxers can be happy and gay and don't need or want the controversy.

Or was this one of those conspiracy theories where the minorities are all ganging up to take advantage of the majority and bigotry? How dare they!
