Which one is the best Sooner tight end of all time?

P.S.- Damn the offseason!

Keith Jackson - 62 catches 1407 yards
Jermaine Gresham - 111 catches 1629 yards thru three seasons
Jackson did win a NC.

JG might have to run an end around this year...

Agree with the majority. As of now, and taking all aspects of the position into account (ie, blocking) I'd take Jackson for sure.

Gresham had touchdowns in all of the big games last year, including the NCG; and he had a big touchdown in 07 against texas; This is not an accurate statement.

Oh, I choose KJ.

Jackson unless we take it all this year, and Gresham has to contribute big time to take the crown.

Jackson = Packer

I will not only wait until after this season, but also wait to see where he ends up in the Neffel :D

Jackson was great on every level and Gresham has yet to make it to the NFL, but I would have to go with Jackson just because he was great when we were a wishbone team and Gresham just happens to be here during our passing era.

Can Jermaine block yet? Jermaine's really good, but KJ is one of the greatest tight ends to ever play the sport.

It was Jackson yesterday, it's Jackson today and it will be Jackson tomorrow.

Whenever I think of Jackson , I am constantly reminded of the 88 yard reverse against Nebraska. Didn't he also have a one-handed snag against those same Huskers late in a game played at Lincoln?

Yep. 1986.

The one-handed snag came about two minutes after catching the game-tying TD, a reception he had to wrestle away from a Nebraska DB.

As of right now it's Jackson.

After the season it'll probably still be Jackson, but I hope Gresham changes my mind.

I don't think it matters what Gresham does...Jackson somewhat revolutionized the position. Even though Gresham is a very talented player, I dont people will be making comparisons to him down the road. It will always be "How does ____ stack up against Keith Jackson?

Gresham had touchdowns in all of the big games last year, including the NCG; and he had a big touchdown in 07 against *Texas*; This is not an accurate statement.

Oh, I choose KJ.

With the game on the line and everybody in Lincoln, Nebraska knowing where the ball is going, Jackson made the play. With the game on the line in last years NCG Gresham didn't get the ball thrown his way.

Yes... He did. And he scored. And he scored again.

Your argument should be against the running game crapping out in the redzone and not the best offensive player on the field that night.

bstuff1979

It's good to keep in mind that 88 was named to several "all-century" teams. In that context, it's hard to make a legit argument for Gresham.

77-0 would seem like an afterthought after Keith Jackson!

Seriously, I love this guy so much and wish he didn't retire after our Super Bowl win. He soooo could have helped us during the next one :(

Jackson gets my vote, but in fairness to Gresham he made one @#$%^ of a clutch play to clinch/win the Big 12 title a few years ago. Remember the 3rd and 14 from our own 1 yard line against NU?

commentator Keith Jackson--loved his voice, but he was an idiot. Running out of steam? Not even close--looks like KJ turns it on just as commentator KJ says that.

Amazing how he just runs away from the linebacker here.

Jackson. He had so many memorable plays that I can still see vividly in my mind.

-The reverse against NU in '85.

-The two catches to save the game in Lincoln in '86.

-The catch over the middle, getting immediately drilled by an airborne DB (Bennie Blades I think), acting like he just swatted a fly, then turning and scoring a long TD at Miami in a losing effort in '86.

We were up 14-7 and it was in the middle of the 3rd quarter. Big time play, especially for a true freshman, but it does not compare to the theatrics of the final two minutes in Lincoln in '86.

^^wut he said^^

My overall thought regarding the two players is that Gresham will probably never be the blocker Keith Jackson was. That is to say... Jackson truly could do it all, college and pro. (I would love to see what he could have done in the offense being run today.) Jackson was the complete TE. Gresham I think is more in the Jay Novacek mold. I guess part of the comparison has to factor in what you are looking for out of your tight end.

Gresham has a chance to be real sick this year! I would go with Jackson because of the game winning plays - but Gresham has made his share in big games- he is a PT player!

We did run a reverse with Gresham against the horns and he almost broke it but a corner chopped his legs out. I suspect we will run another this year!

i strongly disagree...did we forget the big XII championshp game in 2006? i realize he only made 1 play but it was a BIG one.

it came at a pivotal time in the game in which we were not completing any passes at all. game was 14-7. after that reception paul thompson went 6 for 7...

I'm not suggesting JG's accomplishments are nearly as good as KJ's. I actually have KJ's old jersey hanging up at home. He is one of my all-time favorites, and as a former Tight End myself, he was the player I most enjoyed watching.

What I was responding to was the comment that Gresham has not "made plays to win football games." I think it is unfair to say that JG has not made plays to win games. I heard Stoops himself say that Gresham's 3rd down conversion was the biggest play of that game. The momentum was all going against us and that catch, coupled with the ensuing drive, was the backbreaker.

I guess my point is that Gresham is a FANTASTIC player, who has made many, many big plays and helped win many games. There is no need to "bedowngrade" him just because he is no Keith Jackson. Who is?

7/28/2009, 03:31 PM
Well put, CobraKai.

Is Jermaine the best TE at OU not named Keith Jackson? Could be. Stephen Alexander was awfully good. Steve Zabel was too. Trent Smith? Forrest Valora? Victor Hicks?

NormanPride
7/28/2009, 03:39 PM
Gresham's talents lie in his hellacious offensive abilities. He is not a great blocker like some, but he's the best receiving TE we've ever had by far. And yes, Trent was great, but he wasn't as dominant as Jermaine.

Sooner04
7/28/2009, 03:45 PM

best ____ not named _____ could be a debate at numerous positions. Will it someday be the debate for QB's not named Sam? :)

My Opinion Matters
7/28/2009, 03:52 PM
Although they play the same position they're not really the same type of player. Gresham is definitely more out of the Antonio Gates/Tony Gonzalez/K2 mold of TE.

It's no knock on Gresham to choose Jackson.

Gresham is the best TE in college football this year....he's a big time playmaker who plays well in big games....and he'll be a first round pick next year.

But Keith Jackson isn't just the best TE in OU history -- he's generally considered to be the greatest TE in the history of college football (http://cfn.scout.com/2/561921.html).

That comparison means nothing.

i disagree... getting the ball 62 times while in a wishbone offense is a greater testament to a players ability than getting 111 thrown to you in a passing spread.

gresham's friggin awesome, but keith jackson is still keith jackson.

Even in the slippery wishbone, every time Jackson got his bear-like hands (I know; I shook his hand in Miami before the MNC against the Hurricanes) you just knew something big and fantastic was about to happen.
Plus, can Jermaine play the cello?
Jackson FTW.
