View Full Version : Colt takes out insurance policy

Brad McCoy, Colt's father, said Sunday that Colt has a policy that would pay between $3 million and $5 million in the event of a career-ending injury.

"The premium is astronomical," said Brad McCoy. "But the payback in the event of a catastrophe puts the monetary value there. We felt it was the prudent thing to do."

Sam Bradford's father, Kent, is an insurance specialist. And because his son is a client, he declined to provide any specifics regarding Sam's policies.

So... um... the only issue that remains is whether Kolt will be making $3-5 mil in the NFL, or if he'll be going the Graham Harrell route to Canada... after all, Graham beat him :D

SoonerInFortSmith

He might not even make enough to pay pops back the premiums. That would be hilarious.

Not knocking Colt (he is a damn good player I have to admit), but I don't see him as a first rounder. Not the size the NFL wants, and doesn't have the cannon either. Real smart player, accurate and a leader, but that doesn't necessarily get you to the NFL, or at least the first round. Ask a few former Sooner QB's.

If he has a good season next year I could see him go anywhere from round 4-6, a "great season" (hope not) he could move up a round. I don't see him being a first rounder just because he isn't playing in a pro style offense unless they change it this season and he doesn't seem to have the "measurables" that the pros look at.

I projected Kolt to go in the first round, like 100 other players, so since he slipped to the seventh round despite me projecting him to go in the first, he's a steal!

Mel will say the same thing when Tim Tivo doesn't get drafted :D

I mean I don't want anyone paralyzed like crazy dude, but I would let out a little snicker if he had a throwing hand injury the first game. It is true I would like to play them at thier best, but you guys were saying that about Flordia last year. If they didn't have percy and we weren't "playing them at their best" we would be the 2008 NC.

Edit: Again I want to reiterate, I do not share the views of GKeeper. I'm just playing devil's advocate.

Can you make that much on the practice squad?

badger
7/27/2009, 10:14 AM
Can you make that much on the practice squad?

The minimum through 2010 is $88,400 annual or $5,200 per week, because as ENA found out, practice squad players are not necessarily going to stay with a team the entire season, unfortunately. It is very rare for a player to make more than the minimum if they're a practice squadder, (sounds like squatter lol) because if the player was worth fighting over, he'd be on a regular roster spot.

so what you're saying is.... NO

7/27/2009, 10:34 AM
so what you're saying is.... NO

I am not sure... I have heard that in the past, premiums are like $10,000 for every $1 million of insurance, but since the NCAA is sponsoring this now and it seems to be the trendy thing to do, perhaps premiums have gone up with this type of insurance's popularity.

If Kolt were to make it through a season on the practice squad or even a week, the answer's 'no' because half of income usually goes to taxes (we'll leave the obama tax speculation for the south oval, mkay?).

Even at the NFL minimum for a regular roster guy, the answer still might be 'no' because of taxes and assumed expenses. Last I heard, the rookie minimum is $285,000 annually. He might get a signing bonus too, but the guy will need something to live on during the summer, so it's possible that he won't be able to take care of the premium right away without a good draft... but we knew that already, so just ignore this post :D

These policies I have seen in the past cost between 3-5% of the face value--almost always provided by Lloyds.

I had heard from a friend of a friend that Sam's policy was for $30 million--but that doesn't sound right and is well above typical limits provided by Lloyds. Maybe Sam's dad called in some favors.

Speaking of Dennis Dixon ... some good side notes..

In the 2008 NFL Draft, Dixon was taken in the 5th round (156th overall) by the Pittsburgh Steelers. It was speculated that he could be used in the manner that the Steelers used Antwaan Randle-El (a college quarterback turned NFL receiver).[16]

Dennis passed for a combined 12 for 24 in passing attempts in two 2008 preseason games, in addition, he ran for a 47 yard touchdown against the Buffalo Bills.[17] On December 28, 2008, Dixon completed his first official NFL pass to Hines Ward—the reception was Ward's 800th.[18]

Dennis Dixon was deactivated for most of the 2008 season as the third-string quarterback behind Ben Roethlisberger and Byron Leftwich. He received a Super Bowl ring after Super Bowl XLIII.

giving shipley another year further feeds my theory that the ncaa is run by these guys.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYooxim0u0Y

Shipley missed two entire seasons (as in, was not on the field for one single play, in case you didn't get it) and has since played in 3 full seasons. There was not the slightest bit of doubt that he would be allowed to play a 4th season. If Shipley didn't deserve an extra year, Jason White didn't either, because he actually got some game action during one of the two seasons he missed.

It was not only obviously within the rules, but totally fair (one of the few things the NCAA does right) that a guy who gets hurt still gets to play 4 seasons like everyone else.

Anyone know what *Colt*'s projected draft stock is? I saw a mock draft that had him going in the top 10, but I don't buy it.

I don't buy it either. Just between Texas and OU we've got some great college passers in Josh Heupel, Major Applewhite, and Jason White who didn't make it in the NFL.

Colt will make it in the NFL. But he's probably not a first round pick much less top 10 pick b/c he doesn't have the height and arm strength that the measurables guys want.

The only players I typically wish injury on are the paid players at USC. Oh, and Elbow, because it'd be kinda cool to watch him lay on hands on himself on the sidelines, levitate a couple feet off the ground while surrounded by a dazzling heavenly light, and then be completely healed.

I know any one of use would give a _______ to have that job, but I meant "make it" by NFL standards. Did Chrissy Simms make it? Sure he got there, but getting there isn't enough to say you made it in my book.
