Yeah he rarely has a big 1st round in a major. Especially at the Open.

But he didn't shoot himself out of it either.

gotta give it up to Tom. also, in the old timer's category, former Open Champion Mark Calcavecchia...who always seems to spend some time in the top 10 of a major for a day or two.

They said Kim is having some kind of neck problem and showed him laying on the ground getting it worked on. I think he's hurt in some way.

Kim's three under since that 9. I love that the bunkers mean something over there. Get in them out in the fairway and it's at least a shot penalty.

I overheard him telling Tiger a dirty joke at the U.S. Open in 2001.

Also at the Tour Championship in '96 at the delayed Monday final round, rainy and cold, a guy's radio went off next to me whilst Eldrick was teeing off on the par 5 13th. Dude stops mid swing like he's famous for and turns gives me the cold steel eye.
I shrug and point to the guy next to me.:)

In 1984, I was responsible for conducting a burial-at-sea ceremony for one of our submarine shipmates that had been killed in a car accident. It took place near Ailsa Craig, a rock island in Scotland's Firth of Clyde...I could see Turnberry's lighthouse. I will spend this weekend remembering the half-dozen or so shipmates I lost during a 20-year career.

Sorry about the "bold", and of course, that isn't exactly "playing the course" is it?

Curly Bill
7/17/2009, 01:25 PM
I don't dislike Tiger, as he seems a pretty decent guy. I dislike how everyone, and this includes the golf media, drools over Tiger. As far as I'm concerned a Tiger-free British Open will be easier to watch over the weekend should I take a hankering to.

...but yeah, if I could be promised he'd lose it on Sunday, that would be good too.

well, for yer 30-60 demographics, Watson in contention is a good consolation story for advertisers/the network....but, i bet they lose the younger viewers with Eldrick out. they aren't losing money now, just on what ad spots can be sold for the next years when they run powerpoint presentations to the IMG and RBS people of the world. regular people who bought tickets, especially with favorite adopted son Watson in contention. Watson has won 4 of his 5 Opens in Scotland.

not sure my money isn't on Westwood since he won the Dunhill Links a few years ago...

I doubt the Open lost anything, I read somewhere that all tickets are allocated via lottery long before the event and are paid prior to the event by the broadcast companies. Now ABC on the other hand might have some issues with it and audience numbers.

Last year Norman lost and said, "Eh, I'll go back to the room and bang the new wife for a while." There is no consolation for Watson. I think he wants to win this thing badly. He might do it but, man, it's going to be rough. Golf history is littered with guys who slept on the lead for three nights and didn't take home the trophy.

I see a maze of ten footers for par in Watson's future tomorrow. And I don't think he makes many of them. I'm afraid he's going to shoot 74 or so.

That is traditional links golf, no trees but nasty grasses in the rough. Most of those courses reflect the natural terrain which has no trees. They didn't build their golf courses in the forests like over here.

not only that, most of the "great" American golf courses on the East Coast were designed on links principles. the trees came later. Augusta was originally designed by Bobby Jones to resemble St. Andrews.

Golf is such a cruel game. Watson had no business making hundreds of feet worth of putts the first couple of days, but he also had no business watching that shot on 18 bounce over the green. That was a wonderful shot, and it should've won him the tournament.

That playoff was hard to watch, and I'm no Watson fan.

What a putt by Cink on 18 in regulation.

I am pretty salty about this... Watson said it best though he was thinking 9 but hit the 8 and it litterally landed about 2 feet too far from being a tap in for the win by 2.

He may have been punished by the golf gods for saying he likes it while still in flight....

I also give Lee Westwood credit for going for the birdie thinking he needed it to hold off watson at 3 under. He could have easily just rolled the ball up within 3 feet instead of going for it and rolling it by the hole 8 feet.
