View Full Version : Why the love for Jeter?

Not too long ago there was a guy who it looked like got hit in the head by a pitch, but after looking at replay it was clear it hit his bat. The batter shook his head, put on a little act, and was given first base. Most of the media that I saw acted like he was absolutely evil, and I'm not sure but I think one person might have even suggested a short suspension.

So last night I'm watching the All-Star game, and Derek Jeter is the second batter. Lincecum lets a pitch get away and it appears to hit Jeter somewhere on his arm. He runs off backwards, and it looks fairly bad. Then I think to myself, when is the last time you remember somebody getting hit by a pitch and it sounding like wood? So then I watched the replay, and it seemed obvious that it hit the bat. Jeter ended up scoring a run...the difference in the game. ESPN keeps showing this, but never mentions anything about it hitting the bat. They just say something along the lines of "Woah, scary moment for Yankee fans!"

This video sucks, but I think the replay of it shows pretty clearly it hit the bat.

It appears from listening to the video and looking at it's comments that I'm not the only one to think this way. The media sure hasn't wanted to say anything about this, though.

I think i would have a decent average to, if i hit 2 hole for the Yankees for my career.

By far one of the most overrated players in the league.. JMO

In regards to media love:

Jeter > Obama

...and that's saying a lot. ;)

I still don't understand why people think he's overrated; let's look at the numbers shall we?

15 seasons, .316 avg, 2645 hits, 216 HR, 1039 RBI
Post Season .309 avg, 17 HR, 49 RBI

I agree he's not the best fielding SS out there, nor has he ever been, but look at those stats and tell me exactly how he's so over-rated? Yeah he's played on a lot of good teams, but how good would those teams have been without him? He's the only sure fire HOF position player that was with the Yankees during their entire post season run.

Jeter represents everything that is right about baseball. He plays the game hard. He is a technically sound player. He never shows anyone up or self-promotes on the field. Oh and he is one of the most clutch players to play the game.

Regardless, that ball hit his bat.

I'd still like a chance to hit 2 hole for the Yankees and see what i could do....

Oh, 1 more interesting Jeter Stat; his OPS in the regular season is .845 and in the playoffs it's .846; you can argue it all you want but the stats show he performs in the regular season and in the playoffs unlike AROD, Bonds, and many more

the 'love' for Jeter is because he's been a Yankee his entire career. If he played his whole career in Kansas City or Seattle he'd just be considered an above average hitter and an average to slightly below average fielder.

ah ha!!!!! and his numbers would probably be down a little more too.

Probably, he wouldn't have the kind of protection in the lineup he had in New York. But, I still believe he'd have an above average bat no matter where he played.

If he had started in kc or some place like that he would have ende up in new York anyway.

Oh and if you were to be allowed to hit in Jeters spot you wouldn't last long. He is a major league shortstop and you are an Internet chat board poster.

but it's probably the most protected spot in the MLB

FroggyStyle22

He is still one of the best players in MLB which is why he has been able to maintain that spot. The yankees aren't in the buisness of kepping players around solely for sentimental reasons.

didn't say that, but lots of players could hit for average in the 2 spot on the Yankees..

He is a great player... but a lot of players could be great in his position.

I know it's all IFs and BUTs..... and he has actually done it. so he does get credit.

FroggyStyle22

Ok. But he HAS done it and he has come up big time and time again in clutch situations. Also not everyone can play well in New York with the constant media attention. I fail to see how this makes him overrated.

JLEW1818
7/18/2009, 01:26 PM
your right he has done it, and others have not.... i compare him to Emmit Smith and the Cowboys..... hell put Barry Sanders with those Cowboys offensive lines, and he would have Shattered everything.

Wow jlew, looks like you made Jeter's mom mad.

I find it kinda funny she refers to herself as FroggyStyle, when she probably should have went with DoggyStyle. ;)

Not Jeter's mom, just a baseball fan. Also a TCU alum, hence the froggy.
