View Full Version : And So it Begins... Colt's push for the Heisman

First of all, I really don't have much against Colt McCoy. He is a hell of a football player that unfortunately plays for Texas. But to thrust a Heisman campaign at us in June is too much. I don't know if it is going out on a limb to say he is the front-runner right now anyway given that his two competitors both have Heismans already. This just seems like its setting him up for a letdown.

I think Missouri did the same thing for Chase last year. I agree with you; it's hard to hate on Colt McCoy (other than the fact that he's got the kind of name I would think more appropriate for a gay porn star than a college football player). But, I find it repugnant when schools push this on us early. Are we going to get banners flying around stadiums again? This school is a cancer on the sport.

This time last summer Missouri was sending out Viewmasters with Booger slideshows. Good use of their money, huh?

It doesn't matter if you have a "heisman moment" like Sam did helicoptering into the endzone versus OSU, nor does it matter how much bartering and campaigning alumni and the universities do.

You gotta win games. Meshon Moreno had his "Heisman moment" with the hurdle jump (we've all agreed that Little Joe's was better), but Georgia couldn't win enough. Mizzou had viewmasters last year?! Well, they didn't win enough either, so there goes preseason Heisman's chance of winning the real Heisman.

I fully expect us to beat Texas this year, so with Texas out of the title picture - again - will anything be enough to consider Kolt for the Heisman?

I, uhm, think we may be overlooking the top reason to put together a heisman campaign for your candidate: It shows other future showboats that your program will back them up in that manner.

The question up for debate, to me, is whether that's something you *want* in your program. We seem to have done a reasonable job of supporting our candidates in the past, without, say, taking out billboards in New York. If a world-class player comes to OU, they know they'll have a very good chance of winning the Heisman, and that's basically all we need to accomplish. 'Course, the fact that we've had multiple Heisman winners here over the course of a decade certainly doesn't hurt.

For lesser programs, sans Heisman, they may need to make a bigger splash. Still, it's questionable whether their campaigns pay off. Players can see that for all the pitching you do in support of your kids, the most important factor is whether you're at a marquis program with lots of TV coverage for every one of your games, and matchups against top-tier opponents.

I think nobody questions that Oregon will back its candidates, whether it be billboards in New York, or a television commercial on the break following your knee snapping on a nationally televised game versus Arizona (that also ended their title hopes that year). But... perhaps it's better to actually win the trophy than to just put together gimmicky campaigns

Indeedily doodily. Nor have I noticed a lot of Heisman hopefulls headed to Oregon. Frankly, you'd think they'd go for the refereeing, if nothing else.

Not that I'm still bitter.

Oregon: Where EVERYone is a Heisman candidate!

Typical Mack Brown class, ready to whine his way to the top. I really like Colt, but he's tied to a jackass.

Badj, this is a great article. And if you read a little further down, there's a lot of great info about Switzer and Larry Lacewell outsmarting other regional recruiters in the 60's and 70's, and using the SWC rulebook to their advantage.

I won't take credit for finding it - I just remembered it from several months ago when it was originally posted here (although I might have been the one who posted it then, but I don't remember).

What I read about the SWC hinderances were not rules per se, but rather the fact that we had black players. I bet we lost players and gained players by being integrated... but odds are that we gained a lot of good players and lost a lot of ones that we didn't need anyway :D

Ponyboy is probably embarrassed to be reading stuff like this in June and also hoping he doesn't get snake bit like . . . last year's preseason Heisman pick, that Ohio State running back who got hurt early and missed playing against SUC.

texass will be focusing on Colt winning the Heisman and will end up losing another game other than the mud stomping we give them. No way he wins the Heisman.

Agree on all counts. Do you think they'l;l have a banner flying over the Cotton Bowl in October proclaiming Colt deserves the Heisman?

4. Putting Colt and Texas on the national radar early will surely prevent the "Screwjob" AKA the three way tie in the Big XII South that held Texas out of the CCG and dashed National Title Hopes"...BWAHAHAHA!

What a bunch of turds!

Thanks. I think he, along with No-show Moreno were the front runners last year... in the preseason. Losing games killed their candidacy, because losing makes ya look bad, heh.

The comments following the shots of Chase's viewmaster illustrate exactly how knowledgeable these individuals are about college football:

Your Awesomeness tag is perfect! He gets my vote for this. Apparently, preformance on the field is not one of Pip's criteria for the Heisman.

Dan W said...
Yeah, I was kind of leaning toward him anyway. This puts his candidacy over the edge for me. All schools should send these out, regardless if they have a Heisman candidate or not. If they don't have a Heisman candidate, what exactly are they sending out Viewmasters for and to whom? To date, haven't heard other universities are sending Viewmasters to Heisman voters.

First of all...Bob would not let this into his program. Second of all Bobby has showed as long as you show up, work hard, and do things you are supposed to do...he will get you to the top. Top programs shouldn't have to campaign for Heisman, chances are they are going to be on national TV every week and ESPN will pimp you out with highlights. There have been 2 Sooners win it without any promo crap. So I think we are doing fine with the recruits we are getting. They know if they come to Oklahoma, they will have every opportunity in the world to win, whether it be championships or accolades.

IMO

If you're referring to Sam and Jason, Sam had a fan with his "Heisman" stance during a game that went out to the voters (it had additional info on the back). I do not remember any "promo crap" for Jason or AD, but I do know that our athletic department made sure everyone knew the story of JW's disappearing knees and how inspiring his comeback from two ACL's was. With AD, I think it was also arranged by the athletic department for people to know how tough AD had it with his father being in jail and are likely also the ones behind AD talking to his dad (still in jail) during the Heisman presentation ceremony.

I think our athletic department knows that winning games is the top priority and that with winning, awards will always follow

ESPN controls this and all the hype. I predict the will do everything they can to not let anyone win it twice in a row. Colt seems to be their pick this year.

If it comes down to the 3 who were on top last year, Colt will be the winner. They don't seem to want to give it to the same person twice. However, they do have to win their games to be on the list. So, only time will tell for sure.
