I read the publisher on the spine and it clearly said "Scholastic".

But don't rag me too much...I was just screwing with our favorite Baylor whipping boy. They are actually quite imaginitive books and even Stephen King incorporated a bunch of Rowling's work into the Dark Tower, particularly in Wolves of the Calla where a certain little ball from a sporting event became quite a destructive weapon.

Heh, I read everything I can get my hands on in the fiction genre, and love much, despise some (Danielle Steele). JK Rowling does some fine work. Stephen King does some really good stuff. Tolkien did some really awesome work. Many, many other authors also do fine work. I hope I have time enough left to read most of them. :D

I've read LOTR multiple times (including the Silmarillion), so I'm as big a book nerd as there is with the series... and I HATED the movies. Thought PJ raped the original book in multiple ways.

On the other hand, I've never read a HP book, and the movies have been progressively better as the series has gone along. The first two movies are ok, but they're definitely geared more toward the kids. As the kids in the story grow, so does the overall theme. By the time they got to TPOA, they've been AWESOME. I mean, REALLY good movies. My wife hadn't seen any of them and she watched OOTP and that got her hooked. Matter of fact, that's the one that got me into it hardcore.

I'm tellin ya guys, if you haven't seen the movies yet, just start off with TPOA (The Prisoner of Azkaban) and you'll be fine. That's not to totally poop on the first two movies, b/c they're pretty good too, but TPOA is when it really takes off. I guarantee you will enjoy them.

Tailwind
6/18/2009, 11:31 PM
True that. But I like to watch them all in chronological order, because you can see how things develop. The books explain a lot more than the movies, but I love both.

badger
7/15/2009, 09:56 PM
Ok... not needing to start a new thread or anything.

HBP the movie does not suck... but it left NP and I with much to desire... guess we can always go back and read the book if that's the case... but really, when you try to fit that much book into a 2-and-a-half-hour movie, you are going to eliminate a lot of fun plot points.

And as such, without spoiling anything or souring any of you from seeing it, i'll leave it at that.

JLEW1818
7/15/2009, 09:57 PM
Every person that i meet that does not read the books and only watches the movies... I spoil it on purpose for them...lol but i won't do it in here....

its cool to see the cast and a plot that are a little more mature....the Tom memory sequences are excellent...the lost book and the temptations it has for HP are really good....and the Snape twist at the end is well played.

the sp fx are once again top notch, but it's a good movie because of it's a good story

Sorry, but I completely disagree. I thought the storytelling in this one was just complete crap. It felt fushed, hurried and stiff.

Visually, it was pretty good. But the plot and storytelling left a great deal to be desired.

Soonrboy

I thought it was excellent, although I did have to remember alot from reading the book to make some connections. I didn't like Hermione being so forlorn. Alot of bird visuals, not sure of the meaning.

badger
7/16/2009, 09:35 AM
It worries me for what's to come... not on the storyline, of course, seeing how we've all read the books and know that HARRY POTTER DIES, LOL... but if they are going to cut a lengthy book that didn't have as much filler as the fifth one (there were a LOT of side thing that could be cut in that one) down to a 2.5 hour movie, how are they going to treat the final one?

HBP was a lot of people's favorite book in the series. DH was not. Well... at least the entire thing won't be completed for another few years (and I hear they're making it two movies) so the fan angst can wait.

I hope none of you waited up till midnight to see it :)

to each his own....I wished they would have given Dumbledore a ceremonial departure, but other than that I liked how they did it.

its pretty difficult to take a large novel and transform it into a workable film script. I enjoyed it.

NormanPride
7/16/2009, 11:10 AM
The story was rushed, plain and simple. Too much happening too quickly, and they completely left out the conflict with the ministry of magic. That's half the damn book...

Especially since the ministry was a major factor in the previous book, and CONTINUES to be a factor in the last one, it's a major oversight. It's frustrating because all they had to do was throw in a few daily prophet headlines and a short conversation to build up some tension.

baj said the last book is going to be two movies, and that just makes me think things aren't going to mesh well at all.

JLEW1818

Well man, you know that's the only way they could end the series... why do you think there isn't a book 8 by now? Answer: Because it would be Harry Potter and his 800-page Funeral. Book 9: Harry Potter and the heavenly party with all of the other dead characters (Subtitle: Hermione, Ron, Draco and Aunt Marge). Book 10: Harry Potter and the Time Travel Device that did not get destroyed in Book 5 (Subtitle: We re-write the book so that Harry never died and we can forget that Book 8 and Book 9 ever happened... and we re-cast all of the characters with new actors/actresses to make more money).

Care for a Book 11? :D

Saw it yesterday. Lots of things I liked; lots of things I didn't like. All of the things I didn't like were elements they left out of the book (or things they put in that weren't in the book), though, so after evaluation, I have to say that it's the second-best movie behind Prisoner of Azkaban. Looking back, I wish Cuaron could have directed the whole series, but that would have been a little too much to ask for.

Still, this was definitely the best-looking movie of the series so far. Can't wait for the next two movies; hopefully both are about 3 hours in length each.

She's definitely my favorite student from Harry's time. I wish they had put in the scene from the book where Harry asks her to Slughorn's party. The whole setup for it is hilarious.

Oh, and one other problem I had with the movie was that they hinted at Ron/Hermione and Harry/Ginny way too obviously and early. The girl who played Lavender was perfect, though. They nailed that relationship.

And the movie grossed 396.7 million bucks worldwide in the first 5 days, a new record.

Yeah, they streamlined a LOt of stuff to make the movie flow faster. They ignored Bill & Charlie Weasley entirely, cut out all the Tonks / Lupin angst, and so on.

Hell, Bellatrix Lestrange wasn't at Hogwarts the night they killed Dumbledore in the book.

Oh, and the scene where they burned down the Burrow? Also not in the book.

That was my biggest pet peeve. Not only was it not in the book, but it had no point in the movie whatsoever.

I give it a solid B. Things I liked, things I didn't. Lots missing.

The 2 part Deathly Hallows better have a lot more of the book in it and less "director's artistic creativity." I still say all of the movies after 1 & 2 should have been 2-parters. Way too much stuff to have to cut to get the gist of the whole deal for our resident illiterates who haven't read the books.

I just don't get how they are going to do the final battle, and be able to explain everything for non-book readers.... good luck with that WBros

And WB said that Deathly Hallows is going to have "an extra hour-and-a-half". That only puts it at 4 hours total, which isn't long enough. Both movies need to be at least 2.5 hours long, hopefully closer to 3 each for those who love the books.

Yates has said it will be at a "cliff-hanger". So I'm guessing around the time they see Xeno Lovegood, since that's at roughly the middle of the book. I was thinking they'd pull a Sopranos or No Country for Old Men and let the screen go black after Xeno says, "Are you referring to the sign of the Deathly Hallows?"

And if anyone is bitching about spoilers...too damn bad. The book has been out for 2 years.

That's not really close to the half-way point of the book, so they'd have to condense everything before it quite a bit. I still think the Lovegood thing would be a good stopping point. You get exposition on the Deathly Hallows and then the action picks up a little bit.

In all seriousness, I am sad for you "I ain't reading that faggot kid's book" people. You're missing out on one of the greatest series ever written.

was it frozo that mentioned that the harry/ron scene won't make it past the ratings dudes? ehh, i completely forgot about that scene.

Ah and you know how the Weasley house burns in the book/movie 6? Well, we probably shouldn't tell people that haven't read/seen book/movie 7 that the burning of the house is symbolic for red, fire-colored hair that the Weasley family possesses.

How the hell are they going to pull off book 7 now? They didn't set any of it up, really... Just the fact that Dumbledore dies. Nothing on the Ministry, nothing on Greyback, and the Weasleys no longer have a home. Remember when the fact that Harry had to spend time at the Dursleys was a fairly major plot point? Nothing.

THIS book needed to be two movies, because it's the setup for everything in the last book. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if the deathly hallows are almost completely left out to make room for more time on the horcruxes.

I assume the stopping point for 7A will be after the destruction of the locket. It's about halfway, and the shenanigans at the Ministry make for pretty good action.

Movie 7B is going to be intense - the Bellatrix / Hermione stuff is going to freak some people out...

Ok... so if I were to start reading the books, would I really have to start with the first one or could I jump in somewhere toward the middle/end? Maybe TPOA? COS?

I would just start with the first book, anyway, since it's pretty short and you could knock it out in a day if you have enough spare time, or a few at most if not, and it's a good introduction with a few things not found in the movie.

As for the seventh and eighth movies, if extremely faithful to DH they could be borderline R-rated. Hell, I thought the cave scene in the HBP book had to be toned down a little (and it was). There's some pretty disturbing stuff (for kids, mind you) in the seventh book. Lots of death and destruction.

TBL, if you start now, you will have read all them by football season... I'm assuming you have an average 40 hour a week job, or something like that (don't get me wrong, these books take time and stuff, and they are addicting as hell, i wanted to read at work a bunch).... but TBL, regardless, please read the books, there is soooooooo much more information in the books, and so much more background talk...

Please read the books, please! I promise you they will be well worth it......

You could read book 1-3 in about 2 weeks tops! 4-7 in about a month.

I haven't read the books, and I hope like mess you're kidding about Harry Potter dying. If not, that's the most uncool spoiler in the history of spoilers. Seriously...

As for the movie, I give this one a solid "meh". OOTP was thousands of times better.

For the love of Sooner Football, PLEASE tell me you were not impressed in GoF with Gambon's portrayal of Dumbledore flinching at Harry's name coming out of the Goblet and him shrieking "HARRY POTTER!!!" like a no-cajones b*****...

Oh. My. Gawd. The OOTP movie SUCKED BIG HAIRY BASKETBALLS. I can easily take the changes in HBP like I could never take the ones in OoTP.

But for the sake of perking this thread up:
