Health officials investigate triathlete illness

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A total of 23 people who responded to an Oklahoma Health Department survey said they got sick after participating in a triathlon that included a swim in a river with water quality problems.
"We have 23 that experienced symptoms that were characterized by diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, fever," Laurence Burnsed of the Oklahoma Health Department said Thursday.

More than 135 of the 367 people who participated in the Boathouse International Triathlon, held May 16-17, have responded to the survey. The swim portion of the event was held in the Oklahoma River, which has tested high for bacteria.

"A hundred-thirty-five individuals is essentially about one-third of the participants so we're really looking for as many as possible," said Burnsed, director of the department's communicable disease division.

The cause of the illness remains under investigation.

Debbie Ragan, a spokeswoman for Oklahoma City's Utilities Department, said water samples taken on May 15 near the swim course showed an E. coli count of 573 per 100 milliliters of water. The Oklahoma Water Resources Board said the standard for "primary body contact recreation," in which there is a chance water could be ingested, is a 126 count for E. coli.

Among those sickened was Jenna Shoemaker, an elite triathlete from Boston who finished second in the event.

Mike Knopp, Chesapeake Boathouse's executive director, said the May 15 testing was taken into consideration before the race, but the bacteria levels appeared to be dropping and the decision was made to go forward with the event.

Damn. What a surprise?! Not saying I dont think the river is aesthetically pleasing, but when you create mostly stagnant bodies of water this is what happens. On top of that this is kind of a black eye... Should have called it off.

I cant wait to see how bad it gets when they build them on the Arkansas in Tulsa. This will be nothing compared to those.

What most folks dont know is the river runs right beside a closed down landfill. on the north side of Reno just west of Council Rd. There is no telling what is leaching into the river just at that one point.

Well the problem is it isnt really a river. it is a really long reservoir, with very little flow. Therefore, the water has a long residence time to accumulate nutrients, etc... that become more concentrated allowing the bacteria to grow. Any water treatment person will tell you the solution to pollution is dilution. That land fill may act as an inoculator of some of the bacteria, but E. Coli generally comes from point sources of sewage. More than likely though it is putting all sorts of other weird pollutants in there like heavy metals and stuff.
