would you?

I do not have the skills they are looking for, at least when reading this article...or I would.

However, a lot of you here like to talk the talk....so I ask...

If you are skilled in what the Department of Defense needs, would you be willing to go to Afghanistan and help as a civilan?

I have a friend that spent a year in Iraq on the oil fields, and he got paid damn good by the Department of Defense.

I wouldn't even consider it until we have a coherent policy in the region.

I'm all for service, but service with absolutely no direction tends to be a cluster**** of epic proportions.

I tend to agree...but asa a civilan you would be escorted my military personel to help get the job done.

I bet the pay would be well over 100K a year.

No offense to the military, I absolutely mean no disrespect, but I think that one's a tossup. You are either a small, less noticed defenseless target or a big line of ducks screaming "hey terrorists!!!! Here I am!". With normal people that wouldn't be so bad because they wouldn't attack a large force. With nutjob terrorists wh consider it an honor to die? Not so much.

How many civilans have you heard about getting killed in military convoys? I am sure they have occurred, but not many.

A bunch of embedded journalists for one. Hell, a few politicians have had close calls and all the embassies that are ever attacked have military guards.

My point is it's not worth the risk without a clear cut mission.

Now...with a clear mission that can be believed in I'd sign up right away if I had the needed skills.

I'd be willing to go over there. I had always wanted to see about getting some sort of civil affairs position in Baghdad after I graduated -- something along the lines of developing their political system, overseeing their voting system, etc.

Of course, I don't really want my head to be chopped off either.

This is true. When I started college, iPods hadn't been invented yet. There's no telling what'll be around when I finish. I bet cars will fly.
