There was a foreign exchange student at my high school who was from Zimbabwe (she was white). I heard (not through her personally) that many white families that owned farms were getting overpowered by the majority population of black Africans. My guess is that this shift in power led to the instability of their currency.

The student said that her country also was plagued with the AIDS epidemic and that a large number of people suffer from AIDS there. Probably a good reason for surrounding countries to step in and make sure Zimbabwe is secure enough in its economy to keep its population home than force them to leave and spread the disease more elsewhere... not that it isn't already prevalent in surrounding areas. :(

the government was pushing out the white corporate farmers in favor of blacks that weren't even farmers by trade, which then messed up their food supply, from what i understand

and last time i read anything about it, the medical conditions were so bad there that you'd go to the hospital to have a baby and you'd both end up with AIDS out of the deal a lot of the time.

Zimbabwe or old Rhodesia used to be the bread basket of Africa. Huge wheat fields, much agriculture. That is before Mugabe and his dictatorial socialistic/communistic "revolution" started taking away white farmers land and giving it away to his cronies. The "new" owners had neither the education or the capital to intensively farm and the land quickly went to ruin and Zimbabwe quickly lost the ability to feed themselves, let alone maintain the breadbasket they once were... Mugabe is the reason for this whole mess, he refuses to acknowledge AIDS in his country.

From Wiki...
Life expectancy at birth for males in Zimbabwe has dramatically declined since 1990 from 60 to 37, among the lowest in the world. Life expectancy for females is even lower at 34 years.[37] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zimbabwe#cite_note-36) Concurrently, the infant mortality rate has climbed from 53 to 81 deaths per 1,000 live births in the same period. Currently, 1.8 million Zimbabweans live with HIV (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HIV/AIDS_in_Zimbabwe).
