Man Rescued After Grand Canyon Fall

GRAND CANYON, Ariz. -- A 47-year-old Ohio man was rescued after falling 60 feet while hiking in the Grand Canyon on Tuesday, said Maureen Oltrogge of the Grand Canyon National Park.

The man fell at about 3:20 p.m., shortly after starting a multi-day hike that would have taken him to Cottonwood Creek, a backcountry camping area below the South Rim, Oltrogge said.

The man and his hiking companions were several hundred feet down the Grandview Trail just east of the Grand Canyon's South Rim Village when he stopped to peer over the edge and lost his balance, she said.

A visitor at the Grandview Trailhead heard calls for help and called Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center. Park rangers responded and found the man lying injured on the trail, Oltrogge said.
