Lendy Holmes started his career off with a bang when DJ Wolfe wasn't doing so well at CB a few years ago... it's a shame things didn't go better after he showed so much potential initially. I know that not every great college player can get drafted, but I really thought that after the way Lendy started that he wouldn't be among the undrafted free agents.

And COOPER! He did so well in Combine and Pro Day things that I expected some team to use one of their "we feel sorry for your loss" compensatory picks on him. It is a good pickup by the Vikings... stupid Vikings. How DARE they pick up another Sooner stud

I was not expecting Walker to get drafted, but it is good to see that he'll stay in a market that might OCCASIONALLY get televised in this state.

After all the undrafted free agents to not make teams last year, I worry about how the cutting process will treat our alums this year. Any word on last year's cuts having a chance at NFL rosters? Any of our alums that aren't currently on rosters still pursuing pro football?

>> Any word on last year's cuts having a chance at NFL rosters?<<

A friend of mine sees Paul Thompson occasionally, as Paul is a sales rep for one of his vendors. Unless I misunderstood, Paul pretty much told him that he is not pursuing a career in football any longer.

Taking off my crimson blinders and replacing them with my green and gold ones, PT/ENA was lucky to make the Packers roster (yes, the practice squad is still the roster, look at their Web site!). He did not perform exceptionally well in preseason and really was more of a project in the NFL than anything else.

I saw him on WWE Monday Night Raw the night before he was cut from the practice squad with a few other players who were also cut. I really hope this had nothing to do with his cutting, but like I said, he was lucky to make the roster in the first place.

ENA/PT is a wonderful person whom I've had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with in a class our senior year (he was one of the players I've had in comm classes that actually attends daily AND takes notes HIMSELF!). I wish him all of the best in his future endeavors, even though I know they won't include playing football professionally.

I see that Dallas brought Lendy in for a workout last wednesday with several other players....perhaps they'll pull the trigger on him

I laughed when I saw John Parker Wilson's name under the Falcons. He just seems like a very poor man's Chrissy Simms to me.

I thought Cooper had a chance to get drafted, but this particular draft had a lot of talent at the Center position. I think he can work his way to into being a starter one day though. Same for Walker as well.

Of the Sooners that did get drafted, I'd say that Iggy and Duke have the best chance of playing early and often.

Atlanta will be begging for Mike Vick back if Ryan goes down and they're stuck with Sarah Jessica Parker Wilson ;)

Dallas apparently brought in a lot of localish talent for their workout day, which included Holmes (http://www.dallascowboys.com/news/news.cfm?id=A1FD52E7-9264-13CB-63E30FD0868C80A6) I disagree with Jerry Jones on a great deal of sh!t, but this is something that he does better - look for local ties to draw in fans.

Hit somebody, J.D.! (http://www.cincyjungle.com/2009/4/27/855838/the-battle-lines-for-bengals)

No, not that J.D. (http://www.missoulian.com/articles/2009/04/26/sports/zsports02.txt), I'm talking about the REAL JD (TRJD, if you will), as in J.D. Runnels the greatest OU fullback in recent history (with apologies to "Clap for Matt Clapp," who is also awesome). He's with the Bengals and has an extremely remote chance of making the team, apparently. Go JD, GO!

CJ Ah You is still apparently trying to make the Rams roster and is listed on the Rams roster on the St. Louis official site. (http://www.stlouisrams.com/team/players/)

He was drafted by the Bills in the seventh round a few years ago and got cut shortly before the season started, when he tried to make the Rams roster... I don't think he's made any rosters yet, but I am unsure.

In any event, best of luck to OU's Ah You :)

I am just scanning the Web now for Sooner alums that I know were once cut to see if they're on a roster currently.

Allen Patrick spent 2008 on the Cleveland Browns' practice squad and hopefully can make the team's regular roster this season. He is currently listed on the regular roster on Cleveland's official site. (http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/team/player.php?id=3591)

EDIT: Patrick was promoted to the regular roster in December 2008 after spending 13 weeks on the Browns practice squad. The Ravens originally drafted him in the seventh round before cutting him in the final round of cuts last season... then the Browns picked him up and have had him ever since.

To me, this just proves what a great coach Bob Stoops is. While every year we want to believe that we have the most talented roster evar, we see that the OL especially, was overrated.

And yet, year after year, there we are in the mix at the end of the year, winning CCGs and going to BCS bowls.

Look at USC's draft results. Guys everywhere. And yet, Stoops gets the grief for not winning more.

Link on Lendy to Skins here. (20090427_298_0_hrimgs444124)

He is the only safety they picked up in the undrafted free agency period. Take it as you will. I personally think it is a good thing that Lendy has had a lot of practice in pizzing and picking Chase "Booger" Daniel off in the past, so he'll look so awesome in practice that he survives the rounds of cuts :D

I can't believe that any team is actually giving Booger Daniel a chance, he wasn't even good in college. The only reason people thought he was so good was because Maclin and Coffman made plays to make him look good, or however the hell you spell thier names. Not going to make it in the NFL, as if anyone thought he would.

yep Q too.

Quentin Chaney's deal with St. Louis pushes the total number of Sooner free agents to four (Jon Cooper with Vikings, Lendy Holmes with Redskins and Brandon Walker with Texans). The quartet join five Sooners who were selected in the 2009 NFL Draft.

What's the latest with TRRW?

stoops the eternal pimp
4/28/2009, 01:05 PM
From what I've seen, nobody is interested so far...I heard an NFL coach say a few days ago that the "in-the box" safety position is being phased out of the league and that definitely hurts TRRW....

btw, not a single safety taken in the 1st round this year

badger
4/28/2009, 01:31 PM
What's the latest with TRRW?

Total b.s. that no team pursue a Pro Bowl safety that had an NFL rule created in his honor (dishonor?). TRRW was so good at what he did that they made it illegal for others to try to do what he did.

Come on, Green Bay... where's your love for the safety position. I NEED MORE SOONER PACKERS, STAT!

What's the latest with TRRW?

As per Wiki...

On March 19, Williams visited the Bengals and worked out for defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer.
I am not sure I'd like to see him in Cincy, but if there are no other options, I would rather him play than not.

I know this thread is about the new Sooners in free agency, but is there any chance that Dan Cody will catch on somewhere or maybe TRRW get picked up?

badger
5/3/2009, 10:46 AM
I know this thread is about the new Sooners in free agency

Nah, it's about them all, there just happens to be a lot of newer Sooner news in free agency cuz of the draft.

As stated above, TRRW apparently talked to Cincy, as per Wikipedia, but I have not heard of him joining any teams yet.

This site (http://www.ravens24x7.com/column_view.php?cid=74&id=3421&view=archive) did not have kind words about the Ravens drafting Cody way back when, but I have not seen or heard anything about another team picking him up since his cutting last season :(

This site (http://www.star-telegram.com/329/story/1353408.html)'s retrospect on the drafting of TRRW also was unkind.

It seems like every story I google mentions not where TRRW is headed, but the verdict of his pro bowl career thus far in Big D. He's physical, but not a pass coverage guy when the CB's and free safety suck too much to cover their own d@mn guys. I love how all of this falls on TRRW's shoulders, that the pass coverages were all blown because of him and it had absolutely nothing to do with the other 10 guys on defense... that somehow, Superman should be able to solve all of Dallas' defensive problems, just because he is Superman.

Well, I call B.S., and it isn't just because I hate (ok, strong word there... I loathe) the Cowboys. TRRW is a great strong safety and deserves to get picked up by another team and I hope that when he does get the call to a minicamp, it will be in a place that has CB's and free safeties that don't rely on TRRW to make up for their lack of coverage skills.

The bad news gets slightly better - he's apparently trying out for the Jets (http://www.thesunnews.com/sports/story/885652.html), so he's not giving up on this!

He has a year's NFL experience under his belt now, as a member of the practice squad or active roster with the Browns, so hopefully he can use that to his advantage to make the Jets. Go AP!
