http://www.chem.okstate.edu/

At OSU, the Department of Chemistry is part of the Arts and Sciences College and is located in two buildings, Physical Sciences I and II. Our undergraduate curriculum includes work in each of four major chemistry subdisciplines--analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical. Students can earn an ACS-certified or a departmental B.S. degree in Chemistry. Over the past five years, 60 students have graduated with the B.S. degree: 40% have begun careers in industry, 15% have attended medical school, and 45% have gone on to graduate study.

http://chem.ou.edu/Overview/Undergraduate-Program-Overview.html

The Chemistry (Professional) major is most suitable for majors who plan to pursue a graduate degree after obtaining their baccalaureate degree. It is the most rigorous in its chemistry course requirements. The professional degree program also is a good one for students to enroll in initially who begin their chemical studies unsure of their ultimate degree goal. This is because it is much easier to switch from the Professional degree program to either the Chemistry Standard or Biochemistry degree programs, even as late as the senior year, than it is to switch to the professional option from the standard option or biochemistry degree program. The Chemistry (Professional) degree is certified by the American Chemical Society as appropriate for students wanting to pursue graduate studies. It also provides the best background in chemistry for students planning to pursue a job in chemistry after obtaining the baccalaureate degree. It is not a required degree for graduate study in chemistry or biochemistry, however, and some students prefer to take one of the other degree options so that there is room in their schedules to take additional courses outside chemistry that meet their career goals. For example, students wanting to pursue a research career in pharmaceutical research or biochemistry would probably want to take additional courses in microbiology or zoology. The Professional degree requires a total of 39 credit hours of chemistry courses beyond General Chemistry.

Of course I may have misread what you posted...but to earn a ASC Certification, doesn't that department need to be ASC Certified program?

"With rare exceptions completion of an undergraduate degree isn't required" would have an entirely different meaning.

I think you're confused as to how "rare exceptions" modifies the sentence.

Let's strip the original sentence down a bit:

"With rare exceptions completion of an undergraduate degree is required[.]" (Throwing out the second clause, as it doesn't bear on what we're talking about.)

Strip out the "With rare exceptions" and you have "Completion of an undergraduate degree is required."

The modifier "With rare exceptions" means that "The following is true in the majority of cases, however, there are some circumstances where it applies."

Therefore "With rare exceptions completion of an undergradute degree is required" means "We normally require you to have an undergraduate degree. In some circumstances, we don't. It ain't normal to not have one."

there is a difference in prestige of course. i know a lot of chemistry majors at OU and a lot of them wish they had gone to a smaller school like UCO for the simple fact that the Ph.D.'s at OU do more research and less teaching. UCO it's the other way around. the school doesn't have as much money so you have all the Ph.D.'s teaching a lot more than the Ph.D.'s at OU.

Pretty sure if I wanted to be a doctor, i too could have went that route.

A lot of kids wish they had gone to a smaller school for that reason.

At the major unis, you are nothing but a number to the profs...especially in the core classes. The biggest reason students wish they would have gone to a smalle school is because they would then get better grades. Which look better on their transcripts.

hell, in fact, at the major universities, the PhDs very seldom taught, they usually had assistants or aids teaching the classes. Or tehy did at KSU, which was a major draw back for me....and one of the reasons I decided to cut my scholarship and go a different direction.

I know first hand that UCO is a joke. My wife transferred there from OU (was a meteorologist...it was taking too long, decided to switch to something she could get a degree in fast...etc...).

MOST (not all, but most) the students there are R-TARDS. Nobody gives a crap about their education there. The teachers are easier than hell, and the academic level of even the basics is borderline community college material.

Oh, and all that stuff about "UCO's jazz program"...look up Larry Hammett at OU. That dude would rape UCO's jazz program hard.

UCO has the state’s largest Computing Science department. It maintains the highest percentage of students passing the CPA Exam. The Department of Physics is ranked among the top 20 in the United States and the only university in Oklahoma to receive this ranking by the American Institute of Physics. The University of Central Oklahoma School of Music Jazz Division is the largest in the state and one of the largest and most sought after in the region. The Nursing program is the second largest in Oklahoma and the UCO Debaters are consistently rated one of the top in the nation. The College of Education is the largest in the state of Oklahoma and has graduated more than 50,000 teachers since the school was established in 1890. UCO is consistently recognized as having one of the best Colleges of Education in the region.

UCO is also the only institution in the state of Oklahoma that offers Undergraduate Degrees in Forensic Science, Humanities, Funeral Services, Photo Journalism, Biomedical Engineering, Golf Management, Business Legal Studies and Insurances. UCO is also the University in the state of Oklahoma to offer a Master of Science in Athletic Training, a Master of Science in Forensic Science and a Master of Music in Jazz Studies

Way to steal everything straight from Wikipedia! wow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Central_Oklahoma)

And guess what, where's the reference on being a top 20 physics program in the country?? I could name at least 30 school's that are better known for physics.

My wife is getting her degree in photographic arts, just because after 8 years of college, she wanted to finish a degree in something. It's a joke, her teacher's just sit around and talk about smoking pot after class.

A friend of ours transferred out of OU to UCO's math program. And it's night and day. His wife also transferred to UCO's biology program, again night and day from OU's science classes.

I've been to UCO's campus plenty of times, and it is very pretty. However, there are no "research" areas. Have you checked out the OU Weather Center or the Stephenson Research Building? Nothing about UCO's campus yells top 20 physics program. What are they even researching there to be considered that??

The only thing I'll give credit to, is that it is good for getting a teaching degree. But that's still a joke of a program.

Sorry if I'm offending anyone other than this *** clown, but comparing UCO to OU is just flat out ridiculous.

There's at least 13 programs in the US with Nobel laureates on or recently on staff. I don't think you can possibly consider ranking UCO above them.

That doesn't really leave a whole lot of room for UCO. Not to mention that there's a bunch of universities out there not in that list that get tons of funding for research, research output being the metric for program rankings in the sciences.

I wonder what criteria were used in that ranking. It certainly wasn't traditional stuff; maybe student satisfaction surveys? I don't know.

I never said OU's was good, but neither is UCO's.

I guess my point is more along the lines of: if you're having to brag about your school's jazz program because that's the only decent thing there, you probably shouldn't start listing off your school's physics program as a top 20 school without any references other than wikipedia.

I want tunasprout to name ONE good research program going on at UCO that is recognized nationwide. I could name a ton with OU and radar development, or robotics, or even the road they are testing as new pavement material on I-35. Hell, how about OU's CS department, that is currently researching ways to make better compilers that optimize performance for multi-core processors. And that's only projects that are closely related to my field. Any good research projects in Chemistry going on at UCO you know about?

the american institute of physics is not worthy criteria for judging the top physics programs? that's interesting. i'm not trying to compare OU and UCO. everyone knows OU is the better school. the point is everyone here wants to completely discredit my undergraduate studies at a decent school like UCO because they get butthurt about my posts on soonerfans so they try and reach for everything they can to prove to themselves that i'm an idiot. jage's wife couldn't hack it in OU's metereology program so she transfers to UCO to major in photographic arts which is a complete joke of a major and all the sudden that means UCO's entire science department and math department are jokes too even though the numbers say otherwise.

why would the OSBI partner with UCO to build the state's largest forensic science center if all the math and science at UCO was a joke? why would the american institute for physics rate UCO a top 20 program if it was a complete joke? why would the american chemical society accredit UCO as one of the only 4 colleges in the state with an ACS program if it was a joke? i'm pretty sure jage's posts are the joke here. i've actually taken the classes and i've compared my classes with people who have taken the same ones at OU and on average the rigor is the exact same.

haha what? UCO's campus looks like a glorified giant mental institute.

the american institute of physics is not worthy criteria for judging the top physics programs? that's interesting.

The AIP is not a criteria. It is an organization. I simply wondered what criteria the AIP used to judge the programs.

Again, like I said, I don't see how they could have possibly come up with OCU being top 20 using traditional criteria, which is mostly reliant on research activities. You have 13 institutions out there with Nobel laureates, plus a whole slew with tons of funding -- and funding basically equals research.

OCU may have a very good physics education program. I'm not saying they don't. I'm just wondering how the AIP arrived at the conclusion that they're top 20 given that there's no way OCU would have received that ranking under traditional ranking methods.

There's a law school in Michigan that is consistently rated one of the worst law schools in America. By every criteria traditionally used to rate law schools, it's near the bottom.

However, there's one ranking system that ranks them not only as a Tier 1 institution, it ranks them ahead of Berkely, Michigan, Harvard, and a few other top-notch schools.

Just sayin'.

Also funny: they're the only law school I know of that will allow someone to enroll without a bachelor's degree.
