Little blurp in Wichita paper that Vining and Hammond were transferring. Reason given is that they are wanting more playing time.

This is significant, as they are great players off the bench and quite talented. I wonder if there isn't something else going on.

I don't think I'd call Rose Hammond a great player. Vining was serviceable, but she was a shooter who couldn't really shoot.

Hope they find good luck elsewhere.

Sherri's home-grown, small town recruiting blew up in her face with Plumley and Hammond.

Oh, Rose and Vining... if I got their stats right when I did end o' season grades a few weeks ago, Rose only played 18 games last year. She had (total!) season Assist-to-turnover ratio of 7-to-1, so if she can maintain those stats, she'll be a hit for another team... but let's be realistic. Those stats came at the end of games already decided by double figures.

Vining actually played most of the games last year (35) and was one of our better free throw shooters... but that's not saying much, she shot 80 percent and our team is filled with atrocious free throw shooters. It seemed that her playing time went down this year compared to last not just because of Whitney Hand. Granted, Whitney was the greatest recruit of last year's class (and yes, I say that with tons of bias), but Vining would have had her playing go down without Hand around. She shot terribly from the field at 31 percent. This was only better than players typically sent in when games are decided (Rose, Carolyn and Willis). She seemed to go out (and not come back) when she mishandled the ball without making up for her mistakes. For Vining, turnovers beget more turnovers and they wouldn't stop until she sat down.

So anyway, I am curious if this was their decision, or if it was Coale's. Scholly's are only one-year guarantees and I'm sure we've got recruits we need to open spots up to within the next few years, if not next season. It just wasn't working out for them at Oklahoma and they really need to go elsewhere, where they have the potential to thrive in another system... although I'm not sure where that would be.

I love when our coaches find recruits close-to-home, especially here in Oklahoma. Plumley was outstanding as a freshman where she eventually earned the starting spot by shooting three's and getting tons of steals... oh gawd, I just had an awful thought involving Hand. I don't think Whitney will go the same route as Jenna, but it does sound eerily familiar.

I doubt Whitney is out partying all night and jumping into the sack with whomever asks like Ms. Plumley. Now if she were I'd be out near the front of the line for my action, but I SERIOUSLY doubt she ventures out to the cliff's edge like Plumley did on a nightly basis.

The cosmetics thing was merely the last straw for ol' Jenna. She'd run afoul of the rules quite often before she got the boot.

the problem with hammond was that her and stevenson were basically the same player. sherri seemed desperate after that first year with the twins for more athleticism on the perimeter. if you'll remember, athletic perimeter players killed us that year.

the problem was that the twins were always going to limit the minutes of someone like stevenson or hammond. whereas they would have combined for 30 a game scorers with someone like stacey dales.

I think Rose has a lot of talent and was a good fit for the team.

Vining is also a player with a lot of potential.

They were surrounded by talent and are good backups, on other teams, they'll start.

Hand isn't from Oklahoma.

I'm gonna smack you ;)

The comparison between the two was in reference to Hand doing a lot of things on-court that Jenna did several years ago - earned a starting spot as a freshman during the season, shot a lot of threes (and made them too) and she also was a ball thief.

I agree with 04 in that I don't see her as the type to bend the rules often to see when Coale will finally break.

Like a certain wide receiver who aspired to rap on youtube, it wasn't the final infraction that got Jenna booted from OU, but a series for issues... which may have explained her downturn after that outstanding freshman season she had.

What I was saying about Hand's year just sounded eerily like Plumley. I am well aware that she is from Texas, as she beat that Mav in 3-point contest back in high school :D

NORMAN — Despite finally finding her 3-point shot toward the end of the season, guard Jenny Vining has decided to transfer from the Oklahoma women's basketball program.

Vining, as well as reserve guard Rose Hammond, will both leave OU after the spring semester.

“Jenny and Rose have expressed a desire to find a level of program where they can possibly obtain more playing time,” coach Sherri Coale said in a statement. “We are thankful for their contributions this season in helping our team reach the Final Four and wish them well in their future endeavors.”

Vining averaged 3.3 points a game and shot just 28 percent from 3-point range, but saw her playing time increase late in the season after starting guard Whitney Hand was sidelined with a broken finger.

With the added playing time, Vining — billed as a 3-point specialist coming out of Marshall, Ark. — began to shoot better from the perimeter, culminating with a five-trey performance Feb. 28 against Oklahoma State.

Vining's playing time, however, began to dwindle when Hand returned to the lineup in the postseason.

Hammond, out of Depew, saw the floor in 18 games this past season.

Actually, not so much. Sherri wasn't so desperate for athleticism that she didn't slow play Sade Morris, a better athlete than Hammond and now a Big 12 starter that, barring injury, will be honorable mention if not a wee bit higher on the all Big 12 team in 2009.

Rose's problem was that she is 1. nowhere near her original listed height, I've stood next to her more than once and she's 5'7" max; 2. was not in high school or AAU a guard; 3. was never a very good shooter; and 4. earned her high school accolades by dominating Class A and 2A kids athletically. She is a good enough athlete to be a guard in the Big 12; Sherri took a huge gamble that Rose could learn to handle and shoot well enough play that position on a high level team. That gamble failed. She should be a star in Division II or NAIA.

I think we all were desperate back then. The Ole Miss loss was a wakeup call. How do we go from having the top player in the country, being so highly ranked, to losing to a team barely on anyone's radar?

Has anyone heard where Vining is going to transfer to? I'd love to have her at Arkansas State. I thought that is where she should have gone to begin with. Just curious if anyone has heard anything.

thanks

I googled Jenny Vining to discover that she was named a scholar athlete (http://www.soonersports.com/genrel/041409aaa.html) before leaving OU... so perhaps she'll transfer to a more academic school?

She's cute. I loved watching Whitney on TV, she seems to have so much fun playing the game.
