USC claiming the national title in 1974 is a joke. They had one loss and one tie that year, yet the UPI declared them national champs. The UPI refused to rank teams that were on probation. This meant that OU could not be ranked in their top 20. However, it is interesting to note that the University of California who was also on probation that year, did make the UPI top 20 for severak weeks. Go figure. I'll take an undefeated season and an AP natiional championship any day.

Yale and Princeton each have 24 national titles. Even though the last one that Yale won was in 1927.

Espn already settled this: OU is No. 1. (http://http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3849468)

Of course, they also declared a city other than Green Bay as "Titletown, USA," so take it however you will.

If we declared titles the same way usc and notre dame and bama did, wouldnt we have 18 or something like that?

OU wins hands down because it's the only school I ever got drunk at. Therefore "OU, best of all time"!

In my opinion the UPI and AP are the only two that should count. USC claims some titles from the most random sources.

What does me being a former employee have to do with this thread? My information is right. I know my college football history. If you are going to tell me that I am wrong then you better start telling me why and I will be happy to educate you.

In addition, if you are going to count all of those bogus natl titles that usuc, ND, Princeton, Yale, Harvard, and bammer claim then you need to include 1915, 1949, 1953,1967,1973,1978,1980,1986,and 2003 for OU because atleast one publication or poll selected us natl champs in all of those years. I never got those schools claiming to have all these natl title and they are #1 all time in natl titles, how do the count their BS titles and we cant in their eyes, by their math we should have 16 natl titles.

That is why your information is wrong. Those schools that claim those extra championships are backed only by their fanbases and the CFBDW, Ou chooses not to recognize the CFBDW and their champions because we dont claim some title that Hacksaw Jim Duggan or the moore-norman technology poll named us to.

Didn't USC award themselves two titles from the 20's like 5 years ago?

I never get the whole best programs argument. What is the freakin criteria? Is it most wins, most championships, best facilities, best fans, coolest uni's? The only thing that makes since to me is prestige. So what are the top ten prestigious college football universities?
1. Oklahoma
2. Alabama
3. Notre Dame
4. Penn State
5. Usuc
6. Texas
7. Michigan
8. Tennesee
9. Nebraska
10 Georgia

Maybe a few minor quibles but that's a friggin solid list.

For me, a good rule of thumb is, what teams would you show up to root against their uniforms even if they were in a down trend? For me that puts Florida State right in the mix.

Ps. you have to exclude rivals like okie state because the hate is irrationally strong and unrelated to their national status or rather lack thereof.

If the original list WAS based on anything other than just national titles, then the list would not be in descending order of number of national titles.

That's not even getting into the argument about the actual numbers of NCs you're using...

Sabanball
4/17/2009, 01:32 PM
This is a typical chicken/egg argument. Bottom line, only 7 teams have won the NC(as recognized by the AP, Coach's Poll, or the BCS Champion, which is automatically awarded the Coach's Poll championship) 5 times or more--which one IS the best program of all-time will always be debatable. I'm just proud that my favorite two(OU/Bama) make this final cut and are in this elite club.

Notre Dame
Alabama
Oklahoma
Nebraska
Ohio State
