View Full Version : Red-White game embarrassing for OU

I find it somewhat insulting that we go to the Red-White game as loyal fans, almost 30k of us, and we see nothing but crap. We already knew that alot of players were out and that is to be expected, so what do we get once again?

Another stupid scoring system that no one understands and a waste of $10. If Stoops wants to close practice fine, if they want to charge $10 for a scrimmage fine, but can we please do something to make the game a little exciting for the fans.

We saw nothing but the same 5 plays over and over, we saw a defense who obviously knew what was coming every play, and Stoops did nothing to liven it up for the fans. It is sad when the biggest cheers all day came from Tress Way punting the ball 40+ yards a couple of different times. Maybe im nitpicking but I was very disappointed.

I'd call the play calling in the NC game the opposite of conservative.

The play calling in the NC game was more like "predictable" rather than "conservative". Especially in the red zone.

Im not worried about the season, I am just frustrated with the fact that Stoops and crew didnt do anything to make the game the least bit exciting or enjoyable for fans

Alright, fine...I'll be Glass Half-Full Guy.

Watching the OU Legends Flag Football game was worth every penny of the $7.50 ticket.

(I say $7.50 because I bought two at "$5" a piece FROM THE BOX OFFICE!!! The pimply-faced teenager working there informs me that there's also a $5 "processing fee." I'm standing there, AT THE BOX OFFICE WINDOW, watching the extent of his "processing." He punches a few buttons and my tickets pop out of a printer. And that costs $5?? What kind of gangster $hit is that? That's not a fee, that's a straight-up jack.)

I think the coaches wanted the younger guys to get a lot more reps with the basics to see how they do with more pressure on them than with they get in practice. I felt as if they kept it simple for different reasons and basic was one of them. The kids have to learn the basics and the basics within the system before they can move ahead. Plus, you know a lot more people than just OU people watched. I was just glad to see the team and watch some SOONER football. I didn't expect anything more than basically what we happened to see. I enjoyed it and my kids did as well.

considering the cost of a regular season game ticket, I would say you got what you paid for.

Besides that, there is a reason it's called a scrimmage; it isn't real. Stoops and co. could care less if the fans are getting a show. He's trying to get his team ready for #8.

GO PLACIDLY AMID THE NOISE AND THE HASTE,
AND REMEMBER WHAT PEACE THERE MAYBE IN SILENCE.
AS FAR AS POSSIBLE WITHOUT SURRENDER
BE ON GOOD TERMS WITH ALL PERSONS.
SPEAK YOUR TRUTH QUIETLY AND CLEARLY;
AND LISTEN TO OTHERS,
EVEN TO THE DULL AND THE IGNORANT,
THEY TOO HAVE THEIR STORY.
AVOID LOUD AND AGGRESSIVE PERSONS,
THEY ARE VEXATIONS TO THE SPIRIT.

IF YOU COMPARE YOURSELF WITH OTHERS,
YOU MAY BECOME VAIN OR BITTER;
FOR ALWAYS THERE WILL BE GREATER AND
LESSER PERSONS THAN YOURSELF.
ENJOY YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS AS WELL AS YOUR PLANS.
KEEP INTERESTED IN YOUR OWN CAREER,
HOWEVER HUMBLE; IT IS A REAL POSSESSION
IN THE CHANGING FORTUNES OF TIME.

EXERCISE CAUTION IN YOUR BUSINESS AFFAIRS,
FOR THE WORLD IS FULL OF TRICKERY.
BUT LET NOT THIS BLIND YOU TO WHAT VIRTUE THERE IS;
MANY PERSONS STRIVE FOR HIGH IDEALS, AND
EVERYWHERE LIFE IS FULL OF HEROISM.
BE YOURSELF.
ESPECIALLY DO NOT FEIGN AFFECTION.
NEITHER BE CYNICAL ABOUT LOVE;
FOR IN THE FACE OF ALL ARIDITY AND DISENCHANTMENT
IT IS AS PERENNIAL AS THE GRASS.
TAKE KINDLY THE COUNSEL OF THE YEARS,
GRACEFULLY SURRENDERING THE THINGS OF YOUTH.

NURTURE STRENGTH OF SPIRIT TO SHIELD
YOU IN SUDDEN MISFORTUNE.
BUT DO NOT DISTRESS YOURSELF WITH DARK IMAGININGS.
MANY FEARS ARE BORN OF FATIGUE AND LONELINESS.
BEYOND A WHOLESOME DISCIPLINE, BE GENTLE WITH YOURSELF.
YOU ARE A CHILD OF THE UNIVERSE,
NO LESS THAN THE TREES AND THE STARS;
YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO BE HERE.
AND WHETHER OR NOT IT IS CLEAR TO YOU,
NO DOUBT THE UNIVERSE IS UNFOLDING AS IT SHOULD.

THEREFORE, BE AT PEACE WITH GOD,
WHATEVER YOU CONCEIVE HIM TO BE.
AND WHATEVER YOUR LABORS AND ASPIRATIONS IN THE NOISY
CONFUSION OF LIFE, KEEP PEACE IN YOUR SOUL.
WITH ALL ITS SHAM , DRUDGERY AND BROKEN DREAMS;
IT IS STILL A BEAUTIFUL WORLD.

BE CHEERFUL.

STRIVE TO BE HAPPY.

Stop complaining and get over it!

The Spring Game is there for a multitude of reasons...none of which are really for the fans!

one reason would be to get players some game experience through scrimmages.
another is so they can gauge what they have for next fall.

I had a blast watching the Spring Game yesterday and so did the kids!

As far as play selection....like Stoops is going to give you his entire playbook in a spring scrimmage! Get over it.

LMFAO. If it bothers you so much...then A) stop paying and going. And B) if you do pay and go, deal with it.

Spring games are not suppose to be high powered games and full playbook exposures.

If you played past High School, you would understand that, and appreciate what you watched instead of bitching and complaining about it.

TopDawg
4/12/2009, 08:18 PM
They charge money to get into the opera. If I pay money to go see the opera, I'm not going to bitch and moan that it wasn't entertaining enough because I know going into it that I don't like the opera.

The spring game is practice. It's an opportunity for the fans to come out and watch a practice that's more game-oriented than drill-oriented, but it's still practice. Fans that like watching practice should go. Fans that don't, shouldn't.

My Red-White game was a chance to meet up with in-laws and family in the Norman area, so I'm fine with that. It's pretty much a reunion of OU fans as well as a reunion of former and current players/coaches... and I'm fine with that.

If not showing us everything OU can do wins us our eighth nat'l championship, I am 100 percent totally fine with that... and even if it doesn't, I'm not going to blame the Red/White game.

Also, I would like to give a hearty THANK YOU to the many OU former players that showed up to support our current players and also to meet and greet OU faithful. They posed for many pics and signed many autographs and it was wonderful to see them all in high spirits... and with Sooner spirit, heh.

If you want to complain about something worth complaining about, this should've been the thread title:

Red-White Game Coverage By Dean Blevins Embarrassing to Anybody Who Has Ever Taken A Journalism Class

I realize that me complaining about bad reporting by Dean Blevins is a lot like Collier11 complaining about a practice being too practicey...but I tuned into Channel 9 hoping they'd have a few plays...not just Dean Blevins bragging about how many people on the sidelines he knew while conducting as many awkward interviews as possible. Again, I probably should've known better.

sooner59
4/12/2009, 10:52 PM
I don't see what the big deal is. The spring game is basically an extended practice. Starters play sparingly, the playbook is limited, and everyone (including coaches) are basically checking out the new talent. The main difference is that fans are invited to pay a small price to check out the nOObs on the team and see what they are all about. This is the first spring game I have missed in the last 6 years, but they are pretty much the same every time. If you want exciting, wait until fall. If you want something to barely hold you over until then, pay $5-$10 and go have a nice afternoon. Nothing to get bent out of shape over.

I agree 100% with Collier!

We need to let the big dogs eat during the spring game!

Take those ***** blue jerseys off the QB's and let JB and the rest of the D eat Sammy, Landry and Allen for lunch! Run the uptempo like we are trying to win the scrimmage! Full on blitz all the time and settle for nothing less than a death match!

These guys are out there to practice, the O was riddled with injuries and guys sitting out so you can not expect much from them. I am glad it was boring and nothing huge happened. It sounds like it was just a little less than every other spring game I have attended.

Save it all for when it counts!

the best stat from the spring game was no serious injuries. if you'll recall the past games, it's never good when the offense tears up the first team defense.

we had several offensive starters out and I was as happy as a lark that they could not move the ball on our D.

I also got my regular first of the year sunburn and had a hearty cup of Coke and stood in line with Dean the Dream Blevins.

Wow, I never knew that you all were so passionate about defending the red/white game :rolleyes:

I have every reason to b*tch and moan about it, it was boring as fawk! $10 for a scrimmage, a practice, hell yeah it should be more fun.

Its like you guys who listen to the SA and then b*tch about it, well obviously you have the choice to keep listening or turn the channel but most of you keep listening. The spring game was boring, I would have like to have seen more, I dont see what Coach Stoops gets out of running Justin Johnson and Jermie Calhoun straight into the line for a 2 yard loss 20 different times, but im still going to go! ;)

I wonder if it was even more boring this year because of the injuries and youth on the o-line. I'd think "o-line knowledge of the blocking schemes" is one of the first factors taken into consideration when deciding whether or not to run a play. Since they are young and beat up, the offensive playcalling may have been limited by necessity, not by choice. Combine that with our defensive experience and that's a recipe for especially boring.

Unless you like defense...which I do.

I would be happy to explain it if you are going to listen

1st let me say that when I posted this I had been at the spring game then I went straight to campus and got sauced so I was more fired up than usual(hints the overzealous title)

What I was originally disappointed which keeps getting lost is that OU charges $10 for a hyped up practice when they have closed practices all spring due to Stoops paranoia. Then when we see the scrimmage that is already minus about 15 starters we see nothing but about 5 plays.

I realize the younger guys may not know as much of the playbook, I realize not wanting to get anyone hurt, I realize that reps are more important than anything.

All I was asking for was something, anything to spice it up a bit. You are telling me that Stoops couldnt have ran one trick play, one reverse, one wildcat type play, anything to excite the crowd just a little. You say it isnt about the fans but when you charge money to get in a scrimmage it would be nice to see something else.

Is it too much to ask from Stoops, probably yes. Is it unreasonable, I dont think so but apparently a few of you think so therefore I must be wrong ???

IN all honesty I heard three big cheers all day that I remember

SB getting announced for the Heisman Trophy at HT

I can see where you would be pissed. But it was $10 to watch a practice to be honest.

I was kinda disappointed that a lot of the starters were also out, but I also understand why and kinda ejoyed watching the future of our team!

With that said, there were more than just five plays ran in the game. We found out who will be our deep threats, like DeJuan Miller and Adron Tennell. We found out how good our Oline can be. They showed signs of greatness against the best front 7 in the nation, but they also struggled at times too!

We found out that if our Punter can stay consistent, he can boom that ball down field! We found out the Stevens still sucks at kicking! I was sitting in the North Endzone and he missed more than he made in warm-ups.

The Spring game did what it was intended to do...and in the process, it was boring. Something I expected when I purchased my tickets about 5 weeks ago even with it being my first spring game.

With all that, and what you stated, it does not equal an embarrassment for OU. The Rhett Bomar saga was an embarrassment, not the spring game.

Killing is wrong. And bad. There should be a new, stronger word for killing. Like badwrong, or badong. Yes, killing is badong. From this moment, I will stand for the opposite of killing: gnodab.

Ok, so here were my options. (a), quickly duck left, dodge the claw and take him out with a spinning back kick, or (b), take the claw in the face, roll on the ground and die

I know. Let's run all of our playbook in the scrimmage and see how many starters we can get hurt. yeah, that'll show 'em.

:confused: Wouldn't you be more likely to get hurt running the same couple of plays over and over, so that the defense pretty much knows what's coming?

Let me answer for you: the answer is yes, but then that wouldn't allow you to show such righteous indignation at Collier. ;)

Curly Bill
4/13/2009, 04:30 PM
Then stop being the bandwagon fan and accept the fact that Stoops is not going to be showing the full playbook in the Spring Scrimmage!
