Surely they did not do that, that would be pretty darn sad. Don't you have to compete in a championship game to be declared winner of the championship game? UT lost the rematch with Colorado in 2001 after having beaten CU in the regular season. History is not on UT's side.

OU beat CU, KSU and Missouri in regular season/Big XII Championship rematches. Missouri probably would have beaten UT in frigid Kansas City, MO, last December in a rematch, just like it lost to CU in Dallas in 2001.

Longhorns have claimed the 2008 Big 12 title -- with an asterisk

April 5, 2009 6:54 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Tim Griffin

AUSTIN, Texas -- The media had their first chance since the end of the season to see the inside of the team room at the Moncrief-Neuhaus training facility following Sunday's Orange-White scrimmage.

Longhorn officials have added a couple of new additions to their list of Big 12 and South Division championships prominently displayed on a wall on the facility.

The Longhorns have included the South Division championship they shared with Oklahoma and Texas Tech in a three-way tie last season.

But they've also included 2008 among their list of Big 12 championships, with an asterisk.

Oklahoma nosed out the Longhorns on a controversial tiebreaker to qualify for the championship game, despite losing to Texas during the regular season. The Sooners then won an unprecedented third-straight championship by beating Missouri -- a victory that was acknowledged everywhere except maybe in the Texas team room.

Something tells me the Oct. 17 Red River Rivalry game is going to be a good one.

Texas also includes asterisks for eight more national championships in the 1960s since it was an unfair advantage for other schools to use African American players since they were not the type of persons that Texas and other SWC teams would allow to play. As readers will recall, avowed racist quisling and Texas coach Darrel Royal fled Oklahoma for Austin in the 1950s when the Oklahoma Sooners allowed Prentice Gault to attend school and play football in Norman despite him not being a member of the "master race" as Coach Royal likes to call it.

Well...you know what they say about "takes one to know one." UT* and Mack Brown* just don't know when to quit.

So...wait...Does this mean Utah is going to claim the National Championship? I mean, CLEARLY they would have won.

EDIT: Here's proof for those who still don't believe that UT* has found a new level of moronic behavior.

This is absolutely the wrong message to send to a team and reeks of aggieness (come on texas... AGGIEness!).

If they want to claim the Big 12 South last year, fine. Is this what the asterisk signifies? If so, go ahead and claim 2002 also. This would be a good way to get rid of a PR nightmare.

You're Texas and stuff. You shouldn't have to sink to this crap. If you don't like the fact that your great recruits have only won two Big 12 championships since the demolition of the SWC, just call up Arky and get that failbot going again.

Well dumb ditty dumb dumb, from now on, all my references to "Texas" and "UT" and "Whorns" shall contain an asterisk and I would ask that out of respect to Mack's decision to asterisk 2008 we all do the same... and what the heck, let's asterisk "Mack Brown" too :D

For example...

The University of Texas*, abbreviated UT*, is a bunch of whiney pussies coached by Mack Brown* who leads his Whorns* around like a bunch of sheep, showing how aggie-like they can really be.

Please note that "aggie" does not have an asterisk, because they have not to date claimed any championships that they they do not have claim to... or should I say "championship" ;)

This is just weird, man. I mean, I know OU hangs banners for all their bowl games regardless of the outcome in the airplane hanger building, but we don't claim to be "Rose Bowl champions," we just claim "Rose Bowl 2003" (even though we happened to win that year). This is off-the-scale lame on the Whorns* part and I think it all goes back to Mack* whining and bartering and other crap... would they have claimed this if they went BCS'ing in January, even if they lost to Florida? I dunno... eff Texas*.

Well, re-reading the rule, it's a bit more complicated. "A Southern Division Tri-Champion team that beats the eventual Big 12 Title game winner by 10 points or more must also feature the said score on placards, or display the score on a banner pulled by an airplane, for no less than 1 hour. Failure to do so can result in dropping of one or more scholarships. Also, any Southern Big 12 Tri-Champion team that loses three or more consecutive BCS games must also feature the score of the loss in a prominent place."

Well, there was that little affair last October. The fourth quarter was pretty much a "behind the woodshed" affair.

Double-digit margin gained in fourth quarter.

i'll go ahead and say it since you are flat out ignoring the only reason you were in the game in the first place....what he means by "whup" is that they sent a TE on a illegal block mission right at the only linebacker on the team with experience. and then they kept throwing right at that area to exploit. until that point in the game, you guys had exactly jack and sheite going for you.

How can a team possibly be in a game for only one reason, and somehow score 45 points? That doesn't seem possible. Yes, Bradford had a great game, and yes, you had early leads, but compare his 3-quarter games stats with his fourth quarter stats. Texas dominated the pivotal 4th quarter on both lines of scrimmage. Our runners had lanes, the receivers made great catches, and we shut down your attack. Please disagree with this statement.

I just received word from Texas assistant athletic director for media relations John Bianco that the school plans to remove a display in the team room inside the Moncrief-Neuhaus training facility that credited the school with a Big 12 title -- with an asterisk -- from last season.

Bianco explained in an e-mail that Texas coach Mack Brown wasn't aware of the 2008* on the Big 12 championship wall at the training facility and will have it fixed.

By *Texas* logic didn't we win the 2001 Big XII title?

2. By * logic, shouldn't this mean that we have a bunch of Southwest Conference championships? If so, let's put em up on the board?

Texas is saying that they beat both teams playing for the conference championship. In 2001, we beat Texas, but we didn't beat Colorado (they weren't on our schedule), so their "logic" doesn't apply. And the SWC never had a title game, so it doesn't apply there either.

Regardless, it doesn't make their logic any more logical or their championship claim any more believable. 'Cause by their logic (which is "If you've beaten both teams in the championship game, you should be the champion") a team could go 2-6 in conference and win the championship.

There were some good letters to the editor in today's Austin American Statesman (http://www.statesman.com/opinion/content/editorial/stories/04/26/0426letters_edit.html) about the Texas "secession".

I kinda liked this one.

As long as we are going to secede, let's divide into five countries, as permitted by Perry's interpretation of the Texas constitution. Zapata County in South Texas may want to be its own democracy. It would be the seventh-largest natural gas-producing country in the world and doesn't have to share with anyone. West Texas may also want to be separate so that it doesn't have to share its oil reserves.

And Travis County should be its own nation. We already have the Capitol complex, and the Longhorns would be national champions in everything every year. Every student who comes in from the rest of old Texas would have to pay out-of-state tuition. Then we could reduce in-state tuition for everyone in our new Travis Republic.

Football Fanatic:

Hey, Texas did win the 4th quarter. I was there. BUT guess what? They won the battle but lost the war. They still weren't Big 12 Champs. That honor goes only to the Oklahoma Sooners (again.). Also, Mack Brown is still a loser against Bob Stoops (4-6) at last count. Mack is getting better by virtue of his coaching experience at OU under The King & learning from the Master, Bob Stoops, but he's still not among the elite top five coaches in the US (check Rivals.com on that). Stoops is.

OU's second longest win streak (31) beats Texas' longest (30). Texas doesn't hold a candle to OU in NC's, Heismans, or any other measure. Heck, Texas wasn't even Texas State Champs last year....that title goes to Texas Tech.

If there's any truth to this asterisk thing, I'd think the Big 12 Commish would place a call to Clappin Mack or the UT President about it, but we've already found out how much backbone the Big 12 Commish had after the Oregon game of recent history.
