I never expected him to leave, but this is still great news!

In an interview in Detroit during Final Four activities, Capel said he never had interest in Arizona, even though a Phoenix area newspaper reported this week that Capel was in negotiations with Arizona officials who were trying to fill their men's basketball coaching vacancy.

Capel said the first time he was aware his name had been linked to Arizona was when he saw it in a report on a "crawl" across the bottom of a television show. Capel said he was reading his daughter a book when he saw it, and his wife looked at him wondering what was going on.

lol. where do these newspapers get these "reports"? ridiculous

Wow, how do you get out of that one?

Jeff: Honey, you know I'm not the only "Jeff Capel" that coaches basketball, right?

Jeff: Honey, you know how you always said you wanted to move to California? Well, I found a cheaper, more cactus-filled alternative... more Shaqtus-filled, too!

Jeff: Honey...um... HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!

John Cal Cal left Mempiss for a reason - I think it had something to do with the fact that he had the longest winning streak the enn see double aye and still got the big ol' TWO stamped next to his school's name. He got stuck in the leftover school situation - the Big East wants everyone else that made C-USA legit! NOT YOU! Shoo!

Memphis was left behind to win a lot, but with little in return, other than a guaranteed NCAA bid, which a team that good would have had regardless.

This is no offense to Tulsa - they weren't left behind, but rather, they moved up (from WAC hell) when L'ville, Marquette et al moved out of C-USA. This is offense to Memphis for being in a conference that hasn't gotten even one at-large bid in at least the past two seasons.

So, why, oumarty mcfly, would Memphis be a threat to a coach at a school in a powerhouse conference? :P

Cuz memphis is and has been a very good program that only has basketball that is on the national map. Not saying its any better but there are a lot of recruits in that area. And I gotta tell ya the LNC sucks.

You know...I am very tired of looking up stats...but I will take a guess and say you incorrect.

They have had 3 good years in a row. In the 80s they had a few decent seasons.

Memphis (State) has not exactly been known as an athletic school period!

Well, considering Capel has gotten an all-american in all 3 recruting classes, and two in this one, I think that he's going to be alright recruiting.

I'm not going to say that Capel can't possibly ever go anywhere else, but pretty soon you will have more posts about it than there will be dollars in his contract.

Considering he just said he signed a contract extension in the linked article and didn't say how much it was for, what dollar figure are you basing the "don't pay him enough" statement on?

Did you know that Memphis is one of four (i think) NCAA Div. 1 fooseball schools to have "tigers" as their mascot? Can you name the other three without Wikipedia?

Also, Marty mart, the Memphis basketball history is as follows: No national titles, two runner-up years (2008, 1973) and three Final Fours (1985, 08, 73). It is worth noting that they got the 1985 banner taken down just like Michigan and Minnesota had done to them (NCAA violations are a beyonce).

LNC does suck compared to some arenas out there, but it has killer practice facilities and I don't think it's beyond saving if they want to renovate it for a more basketball friendly environment (or if they want to make it better for other indoor sports and have basketball go to the Fieldhouse after renovations there).

Likewise, I don't think OU basketball is beyond saving and can be endearing to OU fans just like football. I mean, look at the women's program. They were nearly eliminated back in the 90s and are now averaging some of the highest attendance figures in the nation! :D

Auburn
Princeton (You didn't specify Bowl Subdivision)
Oklahoma A&M used to be the Tigers
Clemson
Missouri
LSU's mascot is a Bayou Bengal Tiger

Stirring the pot, as usual.

You should come down to the LNC sometime. They've made a lot of improvements inside the arena. Beautiful scoreboard and concourse displays. Banners are sharp.

Smartie pants. :P

I am fond of LNC because I have a lot of fond memories there. The things I am not as fond of is the fact that the crowd is not on top of the players (it's like those football stadiums that still have running tracks around them), the seats are plastic (and not our shade of red) outside the donor areas and the thing is far from the heart of campus.

There are also some things that are wrong about LNC that would probably be wrong elsewhere... getting signs taken away or being disallowed from having fun by the YSG would probably happen at other arenas :(

It's generally a safe bet on any question on schools with mascots to throw Auburn in there somewhere. They've got an eagle, the Plainsman, and the Tigers. I think they may have gone by Sooners and Trojans at one point, I'm not sure.

How does "Elephaggies" sound for Auburn? You know, because they're they aggie school in Alabama and Bammer's mascot is the elephants? I think "Elephaggies" could catch on, don't you?

And there's an Alabama A&M that might dispute the Barners being the ag school.

Here's previous salaries and time remaining on them.

Bill Self ($3,000,000, 9 of 10 years remaining)
Rick Barnes ($2,000,000, 6 of 10 years remaining)
Travis Ford ($1,300,000, 6 of 7 years remaining)
Mark Turgeon ($1,200,000, 6 of 8 years remaining)
Jeff Capel ($1,050,000, 5 of 6 years remaining)
Greg McDermott ($925,000, 6 of 9 years remaining)
Pat Knight ($925,000 {median}, 4 of 5 years remaining)
Mike Anderson ($850,000, 2 of 5 years remaining)
Doc Sadler ($800,000, 6 of 9 years remaining)
Frank Martin ($760,000, 4 of 5 years remaining)
Jeff Bzdelik ($650,000, 3 of 5 years remaining)
Scott Drew ($521,000, 9 of 10 years remaining)

Anderson will be making 1.35 million, so to keep Capel close to the top of the conference I think they'll pay him between 1.4 and 1.6 million.

I mispoke he actually will get the 1.35 + 200,000 after every season if he decides not to leave if I understand it correctly. He just won't get it until the end of the contract. Smart on Missouri's part.

Alden said the deal agreed upon would pay Anderson a guaranteed $1.35 million per season plus a deferred payment of $200,000 each year, which he would collect at the end of the contract if he doesn’t leave voluntarily.

The combined guarantee of $1.55 million makes him the third-highest-paid coach in the Big 12 Conference behind Kansas’ Bill Self and Texas’ Rick Barnes.

The reason the amount has not be disclosed is probably because it will be a little more money than who ever is third in the conference, so dont' expect to hear the amount until after OSU releases the amount they have decided to up Travis Ford to.

Could be as high as 1.6, and if we win the tournament with Capel he will be the second highest paid in conference.

Hey, I'm glad he's staying. I have no clue what they are paying him and my statement of not enough was in fun. I never said Memphis was a better job but that it might have more appeal to certain coaches. As much as I would like to attend games more often and even at all over the past three years I have not been able too. Nobody to blame there but myself as far as scheduling time off so I can attend. Just maybe it has really been improved alot. But IMO its just not a great basketball environment.

For those that think I am just stirring the pot I just express my concerns. As much as I love OU hoops there will always be concerns in my mind about keeping a top flight coach just because of the inability to fill the arena in first couple months and the fact that regardless of what people say. It does have to compete with football as far as fans. People on a budget have to make a choice often times. Places like Duke, UNC, and a few others don't have to worry about people spending their yearly savings on football season tickets.

What improvements? The lighting sucks...we fans are still too far from the court...and the nosebleeds are aweful to watch a game from.

Lighting is much improved at floor level. Much improved. I think the bad lighting is an old wives tale. They used to darken the seating bowl right at tip in Billy's heyday.

Fans are still too far away from the action down low. Bad angle for the seating. It should be angled to flow right to the side of the playing floor.

The nosebleeds at the LNC are probably the best 'bad" seats in the conference. Go to the Drum in Austin. Go to GIA and walk up there without getting vertigo. Go to the far corners of Allen Fieldhouse. HORRIBLE seats. There's really not a bad seat in Lloyd Noble unless you are directly behind the goal in the upper level. We give those seats to the visitors.

I watched 11 home games this season from the nosebleeds, (on nights we weren't encouraged to take seats in the lower section to fill out for TV) and I can honestly say. It's not as bad as watching the game from home.

THIS.

The LNC isn't perfect, and I'd love to see a new arena, or the idea at least seriously kicked around (this may not be the best economic environment to do it, though). But, the upper ring seats are pretty good, for upper levels.

They've also moved the seating around and done some things to make the arena as hoops-friendly as it can be. Again, not perfect, but noticeably improved since 1994.

I wouldn't mind seeing some new, non-Nebraska red seats, though.:D
